| Excerpted text | Most of the milestones in the life of young Dr. Floyd R. Skel-ton, director of research for New Orleans' pioneering Urban Maes Research Foundation, have come about by accident. This even includes his decision to study medicine. The son of a Canadian dairyman, Floyd Skelton was born near London, Ontario, in 1923. He went through grade school in the midst of the depression, working on week ends and during summer vacations to help fill the family larder. Largely because of his ambition and initiative, he was able to matriculate to the University of Western Ontario as a student in the school of geology. He was entirely on his own, supporting himself with a parttime job as a technician in the university's medical lab-oratory. In his sophomore year, Skelton and two fellow students decided to quit school and join the Royal Canadian Air Force as pilots. At the recruiting station, a medical officer gave Skelton the bad news: his eyesight was too bad for flight training but was good enough to qualify him for the ground crew. PHOTO: DR. FLOYD R. SKELTON... he rocked them on their heels |
