Affidavits intended to show that integraton in the New Orleans public schools will result in lower educational: standarcls and create a health menace to the entire population have been placed-in the record of the suit attacking, segregation now under advisement by a three-judge federal court here.
The sworn statements from educational and medical authorities were introduced into the record by attorneys for the Orleans parish | school board.
The suit being considered was -filed by attorneys for the National; Association for the Advancement of Colored People and charges that the 1954 state laws passed to circumvent the United States supreme court's decision in the school segregation cases are unconstitutional.
Dr. Clarence Scheps, until recently president of the school board, states in one affidavit that forced integration would inevitably result "in serious deterioration of the New Orleans public school system and will, thereby^ deprive our future citizens, both white and Negro, of educational opportunities due them under our laws and practices." He asserted that this belief is not based on prejudice but solely on considerations of what constitutes the best educational conditions and environment for our children. ...
