The New Orleans Pediatric Society said Tuesday night that present information indicates that the Salk polio vaccine will not be available here for about two weeks.
The socitey added, however, that it learned from representatives of pharmaceutical houses licensed to produce the vaccine that satisfactory supplies should be available for everyone within the next several months.
The announcements were made following a meeting of society members here Tuesday night.
Officials said the society agreed that a "very reasonable" fee will be charged for the vaccinations. Throughout the US, they said, it has been agreed that the charge will be the usual of ice fee plus the nominal cost of the vaccine to the physician.
"There is no need for extreme urgency to be felt in New Orleans : as only 36 cases of poliomyelitis were reported here in all of 1954," the society announced. "There has never been an epidemic of poliomyelitis in New Orleans.
"Dr. Salk's report Tuesday did not prohibit the administration of the vacine during the poliomyelitis season. The dosage, as advo-
cated by Dr. Salk, would be one injection, repeated in two to four weeks, and a third injection seven to 10 months later."
