Excerpted text	THE 13-STRIPE GROUND SQUIRREL may have part of the answer to a very serious' problem that bedevils America's military planners. The problem: How can we equip our airmen and soldiers to survive if and when they find themselves isolated in extremely cold climates, cut off from communications and supplies? The need for a solution to the problem becomes more acute each, day, considering the new program to set up radar-warning stations in the frozen north and maintain them 24 hours a day A solution is being sought in the development of a drug, or combination of drugs, that would make it practicable for a soldier marooned, or a flier downed in Arctic regions to take a simple capsule to reduce the rate of his body's metabolic change—cut down the rate at which his body consumes energy. But a drug of this type would produce partial blackout, so the body also must have energy to awaken from comatose state. This Is where the 13-stripe ground squirrel comes in. At this moment, in a refrigerated room on the eighth floor of the Louisiana State university medical school building on Tulane ave. a group of ground squirrels is experiencing northern winter. Artificially they are going into a state of hibernation, so that anatomists can determine what goes on in the bodies of mammals when cold weather attacks sources of energy. Conducting the hibernation studies is Dr. Marilyn L. Zimny, a brainy young woman who has spent the better part of the past five years painstakingly delving into the deep-sleep habits of squirrels. Dr. Zimny, educated at the University of Chicago and Loyola of Chicago, is concerned specifically with the mysterious changes that take place within bodies of animals when instinct causes them to go into hibernation to withstand the onslaughts of nature.
