To the deafening accompaniment of shrieking sirens, clanging bells and shrill whistles, the United Fund campaign was formally opened in New Orleans Friday.
The whistles, bells and sirens sounded off simultaneously at noon and, at first, out-of-town visitors' didn't know what was happening. Police had four squad cars stationed on Canal St., all decorated with United Fund insignia. Promptly at noon they sounded their sirens.
The fire department had two fire engines on Canal st. They also added to the tumult with sirens, which they sounded as they traveled up and down the main thoroughfare. On the side of the fire engines were United Fund banners.
Practically every ship in port and every train in town sounded its whistle as did the ferries. All parochial schools and public schools co-operated by ringing bells. It was quite a hub-bub. Canal st. was gayly bedecked with United Fund flags. And, to top it all, leaders of the varied United Fund organizations assembled at the Roosevelt hotel for a "kickoff" luncheon.
