The patient, a young woman, is wheeled into the operating room.
The surgeon and the anesthetist are ready. Other doctors, consultants and students, stand by.
This is to be the famous "fingertip" operation on the inside of the heart.
A few yeairs ago, this young woman's case would have been hopeless. There would have been no way for surgery to reach the damaged valve inside her heart.
But now—with this dramatic new technique— it can be done.
Many New Orleans readers will picture this scene in some far-off, famous hospital in the East.
Actually, it is right here in New Orleans. AVAILABLE HERE
This operation is as easily available here as anywhere in the country.
So are the famous "blue baby" operations, for which it used to be thought necessary to travel
thousands of miles.
These are examples of the vast amount of advanced surgery and research which is done here regularly, though with so little publicity that most Orleanians are unaware of their city's importance, as a medical center.
In this particular patient's case, the work inside the heart is simple and quickly done.
First, the heart is exposed. A wide incision is made from the left breast down under the arm and up the back. The ribs are spread apart with metal retractors.
A neat pattern of "pursestring" stitches is then sewed around the base of one of the heart
appendages....
