If it's not one problem, it's another in Louisiana's struggle to care for her mentally ill.
Here at the expansive new Southeast Louisiana hospital, which Just opened its doors to patients three months ago, the problem is not the usual one of lack of bed space. Rather, it is a staffing situation. Dr. George W. Davis| clinical di-1 rector of the multi-million-dollar! institution, said that he was "just before" having trouble getting technical help.
He said Wednesday that "we have just about dipped into the bottom of the barrel for employes in this area (St. Tammany parish)."
It will be difficult to attract doctors, nurses and technicians from the large medical centers, he said.
The present staff of six doctors, 12 nurses and 50-odd attendants is "adequate," Dr. Davis said, for the number in the hospital now. 100 Patients Entered
There were, as of Wednesday, an even 100 patients, including 15 Negro patients, in the 368-bed unit which was opened on Dec. 8, 1952.
