On the night of April 22, 1878 22 New Orleans doctors met tc organize a parish medical society
That will be 75 years ago nexi Wednesday.
It was a small beginning. Only about a 10th of the doctors then practicing in New Orleans were in the movement, and there were some big odds against success.
The new organization had to battle politics, yellow fever, professional feuds and occasionally lack of enthusiasm in its own membership.
Several times it almost died
and was pulled through only by the determination of a small group of stubbornly loyal men.
But out of this has grown the Orleans Parish Medical Society of today . .. .more than 1000 members strong and a forceful influence in medical ethics, education and research. HAD CONFUSION
A picture of the confusion in the medical profession here before the society was formed is given in these words from a speech by Joseph Holt, one of the founders:
"Back-biting, quarrelling, strife
. . . With few exceptions, physicians avoided each other with suspicion and contempt." Feuding was one of the first problems the new organization met.
Yellow fever struck three months after the society was organized. After two emergency meetings that summer the doctors abandoned everything else to battle what became one of the worst yellow fever epidemics in the history of the world.
