THE LOYOLA MAROON VOLUME 68, NO. 22 LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA 70118 MARCH 30, 1990 Photo by Steve Wimberg Driving it home— Tim Wise, political science senior at Tulane, hammers in a sign March 19 in front of Tulane's campus to protest the school's investments in South Africa. The sign was erected by the Tulane Alliance Against Apartheid among a few shanties the group set up March 18 to resemble living conditions in South Africa. On Sunday, six members of this group will go on a hunger strike until Tulane officials reopen negotiations with the group over divesting the university's holdings in South Africa. Loyola denies illegal activities during WWL-TV negotiations By Elizabeth Mehaffey News Editor Loyola officials denied allegations last week that the university and senior WWL-TV employees acted illegally in negotiations to sell the station. Loyola and Rampart Operating Partnership, a group of WWL-TV employees who had signed an agreement to buy the station, officially responded March 20 to a petition to deny the sale filed by United Communications Inc. with the Federal Communications Commission. In that petition, UCI asks the FCC to deny Loyola's application to sell WWL-TV to Rampart because the sale allegedly violates the Sherman Act and the Federal Trade Commission Act UCl's allegations are based on their claim that senior WWL-TV employees illegally threatened to resign en masse unless Loyola sold the station to them and no one else. Loyola signed an agreement Dec. 21 to sell WWL-TV to Rampart, which is led by station manager Mike Early Sr. and consists of station employees. Loyola's response includes sworn affidavits of the Rev. James C. Carter, S.J., university president and John Eckholdt, vice president for Business and Finance. Both Carter and Eckholdt deny that WWL-TV employees threatened a mass resignation if the station were not sold to them. "Management at WWL-TV at no time threatened to resign," Eckholdt's affidavit states. "Employees of WWLTV did not threaten to resign en masse." However, Carter states in his affidavit that "individuals had expressed concern about the possible sale of the station and one or more of the news personnel had indicated an intention to exercise the option to terminate employment in the event of a sale." The response also includes affidavits of most of the WWL-TV employees named by UCI as threatening to resign: Angela Hill, senior news anchor; Garland Robinette, senior news anchor; Phil Johnson, assistant general manager and editorial director; Bill Elder, news anchor; Joe Duke, news director; Jim Henderson, sports anchor; Jimmie Phillips, sales manager; Carol Sj. Martin, secretary; Debra Barnewold, office manager; and Early. In those affidavits, Duke, Early, Johnson, Phillips, St. Martin, Barenwold and Early deny that any mass resignation Cabra tenants face scarcity of parking spaces By Kelly Davis Staff writer Cabra Hall residents are hoping that a proposed policy which would regulate parking on the Broadway campus will soon be enacted. Residents of Cabra, which is located on the Broadway campus, face a parking shortage due to the opening of the Greenville Hall offices, Karen Greene, music therapy senior and student advisor to the Cabra Residence Council, said. Cabra residents have been sharing the parking lot located in front of the residence hall with Law School students since 1984, but the arrival of 25 Greenville employees has put an added strain on the situation, Greene said. The parking lot can accommodate about 50 cars. Greene said that the CRC is writing a letter of complaint to the Rev. George F. Lundy,,S.J., acting university president, in order to have something done to alleviate the situation. Greene said that last semester the CRC, aware of the pending opening of Greenville Hall, presented a written proposal to the University Parking Committee. "The proposal suggested that the employees 1 who work in Greenville] park in the parking garage and shuttle over," Greene said. Greene said the proposal was ignored for the most part, and now that the offices in Greenville have opened, there is no policy in action. Greene said that she hopes that Lundy will put the proposal into action. "People have to go to internships, to work, to run errands or go to class or whatever, and when they come back, the parking lot is full. We don't think that's fair, because we pay $300 [per year] to park here," she said. Mary Degnan, publications manager of University Relations, whose offices recently moved to Greenville Hall, said she does not think Cabra residents should have a monopoly on the parking lot on the Broadway campus. "We pay just as much as residents do to park here, and I think we should have an equal chance to park here. I don't think it would be fair to make us take the shutlic," Degnan said. "I've never had any trouble parking here. There arc always two or three places vacant. 1 don't see any reason why we can't share the lot," Degnan said. "We pay just as much as residents do to park here, and I think we should have an equal chance to park here." — Mary Degnan See WWL/ppge 7 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ELECTION PREVIEW/PG.B Inside This Week Check out the def jam in JB|| ibv Li,e and Times' p. 13, boyyy1
