THE LOYOLA MAROON VOLUME 68, NO. 20 LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA 70118 MARCH 9, 1990 LU prof dies in fatal fall from float By Kelly Davis Staffwriter John Charles Folkenroth, associate professor of business administration, died Feb. 28 at Tulane Medical Center from injuries sustained from falling off of a Mardi Gras float. According to the March 1 Times- Picayune, Folkenroth, a member of the Krewe of Hermes, fell from the 13th float, entitled "The Royal Wedding," in the krewe's Feb. 23 parade. He was 45. The accident occurred near Lee Circle, in front of Tivoli Place Apartments, located at 1040 St. Charles Ave. Folkenroth fell head first on the neutral ground side of the street. Members of the Krewe of Hermes were unavailable for comment. Folkenroth had been in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Tulane Medical Center until he died last Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. A native of New Orleans, Folkenroth had been a member of the Loyola faculty since 1977. He was a member of the University Fellows Board and the Standing Committee on Student Rights, Freedoms and Responsibilities. "He was one of the most respected members of the faculty, both by his students and his colleagues," J. Randolph New, dean of Business Administration, said Wednesday. "He was just such a pleasant person to be around, someone that you could rely on," New said. Administrators in the College of Business Administration have made arrangements to have other professors teach Folkenroth's three classes for the remainder of the semester. Michael Saliba, associate professor of business administration, said that Folkenroth's Introduction to Legal Studies class and Business Law II classes will be taken over by William Barnett and John Brockhoeft, associate professors of business administration. Saliba said that Folkenroth's International Law class would be taught by two part-time faculty members who are attorneys. New and Saliba said they did not know how the accident occurred. A memorial service was held for Folkenroth yesterday at noon in Ignatius Chapel. The business school has established a John C. Folkenroth Fund which will be used to benefit students, either by purchasing educational tools or establishing a scholarship in his name, Saliba said. The Rev. George F. Lundy, S J., acting university president, expressed regret over Folkenroth's death, noting that Folkenroth "was very well-liked." "He was one of the most respected members of the faculty, both by his students and his colleagues. He was just such a pleasant person to be around, someone that you could rely on." — J. Randolph New Man dies after Thomas Hall produce delivery By Charles lDussier and Elizabeth MehafTey Staff writers A man delivering produce to Thomas Hall Wednesday collapsed and died as he was leaving. Leroy Williams, an employee of Cusimano Produce Co., delivered produce tochef Clarence Williams at Thomas Hall and left the building for his van at approximately noon, Clarence Williams said. Clarence Williams, who is unrelated to Leroy Williams, said that at about 12:20 p.m. he walked outside and found Leroy Williams collapsed on the ground beside his truck between Thomas Hall and the Communications/Music Complex. Clarence Williams said Leroy Williams was still breathing. He estimated the man had been lying unconscious for 20 minutes. After calling the man's supervisor, Clarence Williams called security, who then called Student Health Services. Security received Clarence Williams'call at 12:20 p.m. Security officers Lyle Hunter and Peter Graffia arrived on the scene before 12:30 p.m. Hunter said he got there as soon as he could after getting the call and said the man had a grayish discoloration in his face and looked dead. Witnesses said security officers were asking bystanders if they knew cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Barbara Slifkin, R.N., director of Student Health Services, arrived on the scene and began performing CPR at 12:30 p.m. 'There was no pulse when I got here," Slifkin said. "I tried chest compressions, but I got no pulse at all." A Tulanc Emergency Medical Service ambulance arrived at 12:33 p.m. About 30 bystanders witnessed as two paramedics continued to perform CPR until they left Loyola with the patient at 12:45 p.m. Leroy Williams was taken to Southern Baptist Hospital where he was confirmed dead at 1:06 p.m. He was 62. The cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest, Hunter said. Clarence Williams said Leroy Williams had been complaining of stomach pains during the delivery. Leroy Williams regained a pulse for a short lime after arriving at the hospital, but doctors could not maintain it, he said. "He looked just like a corpse, just like something in a movie," Hunter said. John Scderico, a supervisor at Cusimano Produce Co., said Leroy Williams had been with the company approximately 15 years. "He was just starting to collect Social Security and we said he didn't have to come to work all the lime, but he kept coming every day," Scderico said.
