THE LOYOLA MAROON LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA 70118 JANUARY 26, 1990 VOLUME 68, NO. 15 ADG faces charges for party fliers By Elizabeth Mehaffey News Editor "I agree that the flier was offensive. However, I don't see that he [Miller] had any reason to cancel the party." — John Frey Alpha Delta Gamma fraternity has been charged with four violations of university and Danna Center regulations, Charles W. "Dusty" Miller, director of the Danna Center, said. The charges have been referred to the Interfraternity Council Judiciary, which will conduct a hearing next week, Mike Bamctt, history junior and IFC president, said Tuesday. According to a Jan. 17 memorandum from Miller to John Frey, political science senior and ADG president, the fraternity has been found in violation of the Danna Center/ Student Activities posting policy, a university alcohol policy, a university directive outlining administrative instructions and behavior appropriate for a Loyola student. The charges were brought after several fliers advertising a Jan. 19 party, "Incognito," at the ADG house were circulated in the Danna Center. Three of the fliers were submitted to the Student Activities office for posting approval, in accordance with university and Danna Center regulations, Frey and Miller said. Miller said he did not approve the fliers for posting because he "found them to be offensive." Three fliers, along with two other unapproved fliers, were posted in the Danna Center in violation of the regulations, Miller said. "I eventually found that five different fliers were being distributed in the Danna Center," he said. "Four out of the five were in bad taste." Miller said he then decided to cancel the party and alert the fraternity as to which regulations he thought had been violated. "I made an individual decision that this conduct or activity could not occur on this campus and still have the Friday night party," he said. Frey said that on Jan. 18 he received the memo, in which Miller informed him of the charges against the fraternity and that the party had been canceled. "Effective immediately, I have canceled Friday evening's event at the ADG house," the memo states. "I met with him [Miller] that day and I explained to him that I thought canceling the party was overreacting," Frey said. "I think it's a drastic overreaction on their [the administration's] part," he said. "I agree that the flier was offensive," he said. "However, I don't see that he had any reason to cancel the party." "I feel that there were better ways to remedy this," Frey said. Frey said he explained to Miller that the fliers were put up due to a misunderstanding. LU Board of Trustees will reveal results of Carter's review today By Christie Fox Assistant News Editor The results of the Board of Trustees' review of the Rev. James C. Carter, S.J., university president, will be made public today, James Levert, chairman of the board, said. Carter is being reviewed "because at the beginning of any long-range fund-raising plans, it is appropriate to look at the chief executive," Levert said, referring to the upcoming capital drive for a new library. "You wouldn't want to begin a fundraising effort if you were in the thrdes of a change of chief executive." At press time Wednesday, the board was scheduled to meet Thursday to discuss and make final Carter's review, he said. The Rev. Paul Reinert, S.J., chancellor of Saint Louis "Self-evaluation should be the rule, not the exception." — Dr. Julian Wasserman University, came to Loyola on Dec. 5 and 6 to conduct faculty interviews to provide data to the board.
