But with or without the student vote, one candidate wil emerge victorious. Many will simply choose not to choose and forgo their time in the voting booth. This week, The Maroon' looks at the 1988 cam ?aign from a student perspective: • Bush and Dukakis on Education What's in store for higher education and student financial aid under the next administration? Mark Waidner, 18, of Tucker, Ga., died at Charity Hospital at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 30 after spending about 36 hours on a respirator, Robert Reed, director of Residential Life, said. According to the students Waidner was with on Biever 4N the night of the accident, he went to buy cigarettes in the dormitory kitchen at about 11:45 p.m., Approximately 10 minutes later, a resident discovered him pinned under a candy machine and alerted Residential Life. Security was called at 11:55 p.m., and officers were at Biever within two minutes, according to Alan Abadie, director of Campus Security. Senior Resident Assistant Chuck Lee, on-duty RAs Mike Bush and Shan- nen Coffin and Campus Security Officers Snd Fortunia, t Haydel and Rutherford were at the scene of the accident by midnight, Reed and Abadie said. Security also contacted Sister Catherine Siracusa, 0.M.8., the univer- I sity nurse who was on duty. She said she went to the Biever kitchen immediately.Abadie said security called Tulane Emergency Medical Service, secured the area and assisted in moving Waidner."It took seven or eight people to get the machine off Mark," Reed said, explaining that the machines weigh between 700 and 800 pounds. When Waidner was found, he had no pulse or heartbeat and was not breathing, Reed said. TEMS brought Waidner to Charity Hospital, which has one of the city's best trauma centers, Reed said. Within a half hour, doctors got a pulse and put Waidner on a respirator. Reed contacted Waidner's family around 1:15 a.m. His family arrived Saturday. "I met the family and stayed with them until they left campus [Sunday afternoon] after they packed up all the boy's belongings," Siracusa said. The New Orleans Police Department was called to make a perfunctory report, Abadie said, but security is "It's devastating to the family. He enjoyed Loyola; he never caused any difficulty. It was a totally unforeseen accident." — Robert Reed See Waidner/page 7 Inside ThisiCHffi^Y of the Jesuit 'm». Scholastic See Life and Times/ Page 111
