The MAROON Vol. 65, No. 21 Loyola University, New Orleans, Louisiana 70118 March 20,1987 Alcohol policy affects pub, TGIFs By Chuck Lee Assistant News Editor In response to the state's new legal drinking age, Loyola has released official guidelines for the campus community. Last Sunday, the drinking age was raised from 18 to 21. The new law prohibits beer or liquor purchase by persons born after Sept. 30, 1967. Those violating the law will be fined $50. Although the minimum drinking age will eventually be 21, those aged 19 1/2 to 21 are allowed to purchase, possess, and consumc alcoholic beverages. People ages 18 to 19 1/2 are not permitted to purchase alcoholic beverages, but they arc permitted to drink in public areas if accompanied by a parent, spouse or legal guardian. Drinking in private clubs or homes, using liquor for religious or medical purposes and handling liquor as part of a job are also still permitted among 18-to-21-year-olds.There is no penalty for selling alcohol to those aged 18 to 21, but laws penalizingpenalizing such sales to those under 18 will remain intact. Vincent P. Knipfing, vice president for Student Affairs, said last week that any guidelines set by the Student Affairs Policy Advisory Committee will be on a trial basis for the remainder of this semester."If any changes are necessary, they will be made," he said. "Nothing says we can't be more restrictive, or even go dry, but I don't want to do that." The committee has established these provisions: At the Wolf Pub and during all campus functions outdoors, verification of age is necessary for purchase of alcoholic beverages. All outdoor events on Loyola's campuses, including TGIF parties, are considered public and therefore subjcct to state laws. Outdoor TGIF parties will continue, said Stephanie Quade, coordinator for program and commuter services. Students sign petition over RA firing By Hank Stuever Staff writer The firing of a Cabra Hall resident assistant last week has sparked protest by several Cabra residents and led to the circulation of a petition asking for an inquiry into his dismissal and the general dismissal process of Loyola RAs. Jorge Maderal, political science senior, was relieved of his position as RA on March 10 and given one week to move out of Cabra, but was offered longer time to stay in Biever Hall, according to Robert Reed, director of Residential Life. Maderal, a second-year RA, was fired for neglect of RA responsibilities. Reed and Assistant Director of Residential Life Kathy Wilcox met with about 40 Cabra residents Monday night to discuss Madcral's firing. Maderal was not present at the meeting. "We would not even be able to discuss this at all with you [the students] if Jorge had not given us permission to do so," Reed said at the meeting. Cabra residents, contending that Maderal was evicted without a place to stay or a source of income, protested the decision of the Residential Life staff to evict him from the hall with short notice during midterm exams. The residents circulated a petition requesting an inquiry by the university Board of Appeals into "the demands made by the professional staff of Residential Life, disciplinary actions and degree of professionalism required to be a 'good resident assistant.'" The petition also alludes to a formal inquiry into related problems and grievances between RAs, desk assistants and the Residential Life staff. Photo by Mary Degnan Committee polls universities on athletics By Jeff Slade Staff writer Loyola is continuing to thoroughly study whether intercollegiate athletics should be restored on campus, according to Dr. F. Conrad Raabe, associate professor of political science and chairman of the university's athletics committee. Loyola has sent surveys to 19 other schools to better determine what costs would be involved if athletics were brought back to campus. Possible expenditures include scholarships and equipment costs. Raabe said budget estimations will be examined to find "what we figure Loyola can live with." The survey sent to other colleges will be concluded April 3. A second survey then will be distributed to the Loyola community (including students, faculty, staff and alumni) to measure its attitude toward the athletics issue, Raabe said. The community survey will sample between 1,000 and 1,200 students and alumni. It will likely question the entire faculty and staff, Raabe said. Raabe said the committee needs a high number of responses for both survcys.survcys. If the committee receives only a small number of responses, he said, there is a greater chance that the athletics decision will be a guess. The committee's focus must be on whether an athletics program will have more positive or negative effects, Raabe said. At other universities, he explained, athletics has boosted school spirit and and enrollment. Key questions that the committee is asking, Rabbc said, include: would student athletes receive special treatment?
