The MAROON Loyola University, New Orleans, Louisiana 70118 September 6,1985 Vol. 64, No. 3 2 PKTs accused of assault in dorm By Rene Sanchez Managing Editor A Biever Hall resident assistant was assaulted and nearly kidnapped last week, allegedly by two individuals associated with the former Pi Kappa Theta fraternity. The two individuals have been identified as Matt Niemann, a Loyola student, and Bruce Trotter, a Loyola alumnus who finished course work in the summer, university officials said. Niemann is a former PKT president, and Trotter is alleged to be a member of the group. Trotter was arrested Aug. 29 by Campus Security when he appeared on campus, and was turned over to the New Orleans Police Department. He was booked with attempted simple kidnapping and simple battery, police said. Trotter was later released on a $3,000 surety bond, the New Orleans Criminal Sheriff's Office said. Niemann, through his attorney, agreed last week to turn himself over to police Sept. 2, after NOPD officers with an arrest warrant unsuccessfully attempted to find him, said Vincent P. Knipfing, vice president for Student Affairs. Knipfing said Tuesday that he did not know if Niemann had turned himself over to police, and added that he had heard Niemann had left New Orleans. Niemann, who informed the registrar Aug. 28 he would withdraw from the university Sept. 2, is still considered a student and has been suspended from Loyola on an interim basis, Knipfing said. Niemann was suspended because Knipfing judged him to be a threat to the campus. A formal hearing by Student Affairs will be held today, he said. Starting the year off right The Rev. James C. The resolution, which was approved by a 13-9 vote, also warns all students of the ramifications of PKT association, and requests that the Office of Student Affairs take immediate action toward students associated with PKT if "any further policies are violated, rights Loyola weathers hurricane's threat Judi Hymel News Editor While Hurricane Elena stalled and shifted its path on the Gulf Coast, Loyola's Emergency Preparedness Committee charted its own course for campus safety. In addition, a three-day Labor Day weekend began one day early when Loyola cancelled classes Friday due to hurricane warnings issued Thursday afternoon. At 5 p.m. Thursday, soon after the hurricane warning had been issued, the emergency committee met to review emergency procedures with resident and desk assistants, said Vincent P. Knipfing, committee chairman and vice president for Student Affairs. The committee is made up of the Student Affairs staff and employees of Loyola's food service and physical plant department who plan emergency procedures for the university. On Friday, the warnings were lifted when it looked as though Elena was headed toward the Florida peninsula, but Sunday Elena became a renewed threat when it again changed its course and headed for New Orleans. ••• Resident assistants called floor meetings Thursday night, asking students to be in the dorm by 11 p.m., to keep window blinds shut and to move into the hallway if a state of emergency was declared. "We just pleaded with everyone to be calm and obey the procedures," said A 1 Hanson, a senior R.A. at Biever Hall. He said that students were "real quiet and attentive to the [television] news and they were real concerned about food." For sophomore R.A. Geraldine Benedict, Labor Day started at S a.m., when check-in began for members of the committee and Campus Security and their families. "I was sitting up all night taking in security guards and their families," she said. "But I didn't mind because in an emergency you've got to help. Everyone was pitching in and I enjoyed what I was doing." She said most students remained calm during the weekend. "By Sunday, everyone had prepared for it so everyone was calm and cool," she said. "It was very well-organized." ••• During an emergency, committee members and security officers called on duty are permitted to bring their families with them. According to Jim Pappenhagen, assistant director of Residential Operations, Loyola has about 70 extra beds. "When we call in people, we provide service for them," he said. Edward Hasselbeck, operation supervisor for Campus Security, brought his wife, five children, four grandchildren and his parents-in-law to campus at 2:30 a.m. Monday. Hasselbeck said having 12 people in one dorm room was not a problem. "In times like these you got to take what you can get," he said. "We were real worried about flooding and it was nice to be in a building where everyone could be dry and comfortable." His family stayed on the 11th floor of Buddig until Monday afternoon. • •• "I was a mess Thursday," said Laurie Duplessis, communications freshman from Point a la Hache, who could not reach her parents by telephone because the circuits were jammed. Duplessis said her parents had to evacuate Thursday, but her father told her to stay in New Orleans. On Saturday Duplessis went home to help her family get their house back in order, only to be evacuated again Sunday. See Attack/page 4 See SG A /page 4 See Elena/page 3
