The MAROON Vol. 61, No. 26 Loyola University, New Orleans, Louisiana 70118 April 29, 1983 Broz wins close election By Andrew Moreau Student Government Association Vice President Pete Broz was elected 1983-1984 SGA president, defeating arts and sciences representative Kenneth Beck by 42 votes, in a runoff election Tuesday and Wednesday. Broz, business management junior, received 609 (51.8 percent) of the 1,176 votes cast. Beck, political science/philosophy senior and Maroon business manager, received 567 (48.2 percent). The runoff election was necessary because neither candidate received the necessary 50 percent of the vote in last week's elections. After the election, Broz said that during the summer he will work with vice president-elect John Killilea, communications junior, to re-examine the SGA's rules and procedures. They will work "to refine them [the rules and procedures] a little bit and attempt to make them reflect the true means by which we do business — that is, the new committee system/' Also, Broz expressed his appreciation to the organizations that supported his candidacy. Beck said, "I was not the favored candidate from the beginning. The amount of votes that I did get stands for something. It seems that many people have the same values as I and hold the same position that I do on the issues that were addressed in this election. I hope that the new administration recognizes this." In other election runoffs, Andre C. Gaudin, social work junior, received 323 votes to defeat Kimberly Krautter, communications freshman, who received 265 votes. Gaudin will fill the remaining spot as representative of the arts and sciences delegation, joining the nine students elected last week. For the remaining spot in the business school delegation, Mary Ann Plasencia, general business sophomore, was elected into office with 161 votes. Plasencia defeated Julie Schwarz, general business freshman, who received 149 votes. Patricia Ordonez qualified for the runoff last week but dropped from the race. Plasencia will join the six students elected last week as business represenatives. In the music school runoff, Aaron Ambeau, music performance sophomore, defeated Robert Bullington, music theory freshman, 35 votes to 24. For congressperson-at-large, Tom Finnegan, marketing junior, defeated David Branch, communications sophomore, to fill the remaining spot in the SGA. Finnegan polled 615 votes to Branch's 425. Mary Maclntyre, communications senior, was elected as congressperson-at-large in last week's elections. Elected congress members will be sworn into office May 3 and will meet Tuesday afternoons in the Audubon Room of the Danna Center. Thomas Blalock, Loyola security director, said the area to be ticketed by the security department will extend from campus to Palmer Street and * include the area from Freret Street to St. Charles Ave. Blalock said his department is authorized to ticket illegally parked cars that are off campus. "The authorization came from the city council a couple of years ago," Blalock maintained. "Because of logistical reasons we haven't been doing it." The "logistical reasons" that had kept the department from ticketing on residential streets stemmed from a city request to have those ticket copies retained by Loyola security delivered to police headquarters on a daily basis, Blalock said. "Because of the fact we don't have vehicles here, that would have been difficult to do," he said. Blalock now plans to have the tickets delivered to the police by Tulane's security department. "They have vehicles," Blalock said. "That's probably the way it's going to be done; we're still talking," he added. For the time being, one of Loyola's security officers is bringing the tickets to police headquarters every other day, according to Blalock. Blalock said one reason Loyola security was authorized to ticket in the surrounding neighborhood was to relieve New Orleans police from the task. „ „ . jt . m Rooms found for men, housing for all women By John McCusker The problems stemming from last Tuesday's room registration for men at Biever Hall seem to have been alleviated, according to Vice President for Student Affairs Vincent P. Knipfing. "We have decided that we're not going to have the law floor as such in Biever Hall next year. Since we only had six law students who wanted to return we're going to give them the center suites in Biever Hall, putting three in a suite, Knipfing said. "It may be temporary, but it may be temporary for the whole year." "That will give 40 more spaces to undergraduate men, which will basically take care of all the men," Knipfing said. According to Robert Reed, director of Residential Life, the establishment of a waiting list for those 40 spaces was done through a lottery for men who were unable to register for rooms. Thirty-five men signed up for the lottery. "That still leaves us over," Knipfing said. "I don't want to sound like an airline, but we always over subscribe because we know some people aren't going to return." In order to provide permanent housing for law students, Knipfing said Last week women camped out on the 12th floor of Buddig Hall to change rooms for next fall. Registration was postponed until Wednesday. —Photo by John Met usker See Ticketing/page 8 See Housing/page 8
