The MAROON September 3, 1982 Vol. 61, No. 2 Loyola University, New Orleans, Louisiana 70118 Food services experience losses By Jan Gbur Assistant News Editor Summer business slow The Orleans Room might have experienced losses up to $50,000 this summer, according to estimates by James Hardy, director of Pilot Food Services. Hardee's also lost money, as both were obligated to remain open to meet the needs of people on campus. Figures for the summer of 1981 for the Orleans Room showed a loss of $40-50,000, according to Hardy. "We had substantial losses this year," he said, and he expects this year's losses to be close to last summer's figures. Hardee's manager, Gary Blanchard, was not available for comment. "Both of them lost money," said Manny Cunard, Danna Center director. "It would be nice to have just one break even, but both of them lost." Cunard said what might be more accurate to say is that the Orleans Room is making less money because of the summer. "We know there will be a loss in the summer so it is figured into the board plan price," Hardy said. He added that problems can arise in obtaining an accurate price for board plans when accounting for summer losses. But Hardy explained this year's board plan price increase of 9.8 percent and the cash price increase on some items of five percent as inflationary, not the result of summer losses. Loyola is not unique in summer food losses, he explained. The food services at the nine other colleges that Hardy once worked with have also experienced summer deficits. "The university is committed to provide food service over the summer," Hardy said. "The Orleans Room stayed open over the summer so people on campus could eat fully balanced meals instead of hamburgers all summer long." Hardee's also lost money, but closing Hardee's during the summer could result in serious management problems, Cunard said. "What would they do with all of the employees if they shut down for three months and then tried to hire a whole new staff? "If Hardee's shut down for the whole summer they'd probably lose more money than by staying open because of depreciation costs and management costs," he added. "If they have any cash flow at all, it's better than none. If you lose money one month and make money the other month, it balances out." The use of the Orleans Room, according to Hardy, varied because of summer conference groups on campus. Bill denies aid to draft violators By Tammy Collins Staff Reporter Federal student aid will be denied to male students who do not comply witfi draft registration, if a proposed bill is made into law. The bill was approved by large margins in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The proposed law would apply the ban to the following federal financial aid programs: Guaranteed Student Loans, Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, College Work-Study, National Direct Student Loans and State Student Incentive Grants. Because 7 percent — 674,000 of the more than 9 million men — of all eligible men have not registered for the draft, questions have been raised as to whether the law can be enforced. Those who do not register face up to five years in jail and $10,000 in fines. Yet, withholding financial aid may prove more of a burden than it is worth, according to those who would be left to enforce the measure. "The law would be a real pain administratively. It would be another delay that students would have to encounter in order to get assistance," said Dr. E. P. Seybold, director of financial aid. Dallas Martin, executive director of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, was quoted in The Chronicle of Higher Education as saying, "requiring colleges to act as intermediaries between students and government officials monitoring draft registration could create 'an administrative nightmare.' " Since campus officials are the only sources of complete and up-to-date information about applicants for aid, Miriam Rosenberg, national director of the Coalition of Independent College and University Students, said the measure was sure to saddle colleges with new paperwork, according to the article. College students' groups located in Washington, D.C., feel the proposed law would expose hundreds of thousands of them to inequitable and unnecessary punishment. The students here at Loyola who know about the bill seem to agree with the student groups in Washington. A junior English major who did not want to be identified said he had not registered for the draft. "The government shouldn't deprive us of an education just because we don't want to waste it by getting killed," he said. More parking, temporary ease Residents were awakened Monday by the sound of bulldozers as construction began on a new parking lot to be located between the Danna Center and Buddig Hall. A project foreman said the work would take two to three weeks and should create 27 new spaces. The lot is designed to help offset the space shortage created by a new building going up on the lot between the Monroe Science Complex and the music school. Construction on the new building will begin shortly, according to John Sears, director of Planning, Management and Evaluation. —Photo by John McCusktr See Losses/page 4
