MAROON Vol. 60, Xo. 4 Loyola University, New Orleans September 18, 1981 Film showing ignites demonstration By Glenn P. Collins Maroon Reporter Demonstrators stood in front of the Danna Center Saturday night to protest a film screening in the Audubon Room. The film was sponsored by the Loyola University Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador. The protesters were composed of several groups including the Cuban Patriotic Council, the Nicaraguan Democratic Association and the Nicaraguan Democratic Action for the People, none of which is a recognized campus organization. One demonstrator said the groups "came here to peacefully demonstrate against the communist-sponsored movie in the Danna Center." The demonstrator requested anonymity out of fear of physical harm to him or his family in El Salvador. "We were denied entrance even though a public announcement was made. We asked for a peaceful entrance but were denied the right to go in," he said. Witnesses said several of the demonstrators who tried to enter were forceably ejected from the Danna Center by Loyola Security officers. Security Director John Ghio was unavailable for comment. Also involved in presenting the film were the New Orleans Nicaraguan Solidarity Organization and the New Orleans Coalition in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador. Dan Sifferlin, adviser of the Loyola University Community Action Program (LUCAP), is involved with the El Salvador group; he said: "The group lobbies against U.S. military aid to El Salvador and tries to raise funds to help refugees. [It] is trying to raise awareness on the Loyola campus of the needs of refugees." Sifferlin said it is not a communist group. "I'm not a communist," he said. "To [the protesters] anybody that supports human rights in Central America is a communist." Sifferlin estimated 100 people were in the audience for the films. Of those he said, "I saw about four or five Loyola students out there. "He said there were about 20 protesters. Another demonstrator — who also wanted anonymity — said several people involved in the screening stood by the window taking pictures of the demonstrators. "They are taking pictures to send back to my country's security agency. This has happened before. Fortunately, none of my family is still there," he said. The event included films on the volatile political situations in Nicaragua, El Salvador and other Central American countries. Kathy Sampson, speaking for the New Orleans Nicaraguan Solidarity Organization, made several announcements, including plans to disrupt President Ronald Reagan's Sept. 28 visit to New Orleans. She also asked for contributions to help maintain the Nicaraguan revolution, which she said the United States is opposed to. Other New Orleans groups involved in the film presentation included the People's Bookstore of New Orleans, which was selling several books and pamphlets including Marx's Communist Manifesto, The Complete Travel Guide to Cuba, Inside the Nicaraguan Revolutution and Revolt in El Salvador. Bumper stickers saying "U.S. Out of El Salvador" and discount coupons for the magazine The Militant were also available. WLDC is still a division of the communications department, the station is not a part of SGA or supervised by SGA, and WLDC is not yet in the process of making application to the FCC for a on-air license. The Maroon regrets the errors. According to Schmidt's letter of dismissal, she was fired because of "complaints" from reporters and fellow staff members. No specifics were given. The staff met with Editor in Chief Alan Gainsburgh Sept. 10 to air complaints over his leadership and competence. Schmidt was dismissed on Sept. 12. Staff members Amy Pepper, managing editor; Joel Silvershein, sports editor; John Foley, Arcade editor (the feature section of the Hullabaloo) and Ira Rosenzweig, senior contributing editor and former editor in chief, resigned the next day. According to Schmidt, "Ten semesters of experience were lost in exchange for two semesters of experience as business manager." Gainsburgh was the paper's business manager last year. As a result of the resignations, the scheduled Tuesday edition of the semiweekly The Tulane Hullabaloo was not published. Rosenzweig said, "He (Gainsburgh) didn't have the experience, not only in journalism, but in handling the situations that arise in producing a See Hullabaloo /page 5
