loyola MAROON LOYOLA UNIVERSITY NEW ORLEANS MARCH 18,1977 VOI.. LI 11 IMO.IS SGA asks Carter to listen By Dwan Singleton The Student Government Association last night passed a resolution urging the Very Rev. James C. Carter, S.J. to meet with students about the denial of tenure to a College of Business Administration (acuity member. In its resolution, the SGA said it "supports the students' right to be heard" about the denial of tenure to Dr. Daniel Schneid, an associate professor of finance. According to Paul Pastorek, "There is the possibility for a veto (of the denial of tenure) on the part of Fr. Carter." Joe Altonji, SGA vice president, said, "All we're doing is saying Fr. Carter ought to listen to the students. We're not requesting that Dr. Schneid be given tenure." Immediately after the resolution was passed, Neil Clemmons, one of over one hundred students and alumni to sign a petition requesting Fr. Carter "to veto such denial of tenure," asked the MAROON not to print a story on the resolution. Clemmons said Schneid did not want a story on his tenure case published because of possible sensationalism. Charlie Raymond, SGA Parliamentarian, said the meeting was open to the public and therefore subject to publication. Anne Bienfang, SGA president, and Sean O'Keefe, former SGA president, also suggested that the story on the resolution not be published because Schneid's name would be involved. O'Keefe said during the meeting that the resolution was a positive step toward student representation on the five college rank and tenure committees. Bienfang once before asked that a proposal appropriating $400 for plaques, keys and a party for SGA members not be mentioned in a MAROON story because she said she planned on vetoing it before the next meeting. This was vetoed and another substitute proposal was passed allocating $165 for pins for the SGA members and officers. In other action, the SGA allocated up to $300 for a kiosk, a seven-foot high, five-sided revolving bulletin board, to be placed in front of Ye Olde Sweet Shop. It will contain information on student organizations. Manny Cunard, director of the Danna Center and Student Activities, said he needed money from the SGA because the Danna Center gets no money from the University and operates only on the revenue it brings in. SG A candidates met Wednesday in front of the Danna Center at an open debate to inform students of their platforms and allow students to ask questions. Unfortunately, most students were not interested in the debate, except for the free beer it offered. Photo by Liz Simon. SG A Candidates explain personal assets Joe Aidoo I am very confident about the response I have been receiving from the student body. My platform has been judged as the best, my answers to all three press debates have been judged the best, and my qualifications and experience are impressive to the entire student body to declare me the best candidate. In the history of University, I am the only candidate to be declared as mature, ambitious and dedicated in S(JA presidential elections. All these recommendations will be in vain unless the student body follow up their recommendations and vote for Joe Aidoo on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 21 and 22 respectively. All the statements in my platform - such as assisting for the release of the state-allocated funds for the University, taking immediate actions toward parking problems, library improvements and extending the loan program to City College, opening the SGA otYice at night, working in cooperation with all organizations on campus, inviting feasible participation-these can be done only if you elect Joe A Woo. The friendship administration of the SGA, the DO NOTHING attitude will still exist unless you can elect Joe Aidoo and break the existing DO NOTHING political machine competing against Joe Aidoo. Vince Corona This coming Monday and Tuesday, you'll have a chance to choose among four candidates for president of the SGA. You determine the criterion you use to make your selection. I would like to suggest three points for your consideration. They are: willingness, experience and platform. Please consider these three facts, as presentedby each of the candidates before you make your final decision. Through working with Loyola Student Union for the past two years, I have justified my willingness to work for the students, and with the administration. Being president of the Union for the past year has enabled me to relate to students, finding out what their needs and wants really are. I have also developed a mature and respectful relationship with the ;uliiiinistr;iiuiii, using the SGA as a mediator and respresentative. Personally I feel the SGA has failed in its responsibility to sufficiently inform students on the administration's current issues affecting student life. The time has come to rectify this deficiency. Vote Corona for a sophisticated Book Exchange System. Vote Corona for a better parking situation. Vote Corona for the opportunity to use a genuine library. Vote Corona and have a chance to voice your opinion. Vote Corona. Jim I addon I'd like to take this opportunity to express my interest in the job of SGA president and to make a few promises which 1 feel can be realistically met. Progress doesn't begin without a past; it is an evolutionary process. My interests in the job have developed from my involvement in Student Government. If elected, I'd insure that the SGA's progress continues in accordance to all of Loyola's needs and that the state of progress is adequately reported to the entire student body. We should be held accountable for our actions. Alan Citron and myself promise to be totally responsive to student needs. Students have the right to demand that their tees are spent responsibly and as vice-president and chairman of the finance committee, Citron will insist that they are. Students also have the right to demand that their causes are well represented on university and college committees and to the administration in general, And we promise that they will be. Briefly my platform is this: We will lobby city council with our neighbor, Tulane University through the inner-city SGA for a solution to the parking problem. We will work for the publicity of teacher evaluations, placing a member on the university rank and tenure committee, and for developing, through faculty members and alumni, programs which stimulate this campus intellectually and socially, and secure a future for Loyola graduates. On March 21 and 22 we need your vote. Bob Tarcza Bob Tarcza has the experience needed to be an effective SGA President. That experience has been gained by dealing with the students, and becoming familiar with their needs. The most important issue to face the Student Government next year will be whether it can consolidate the desires of the students into one solid voice, each student having an interest in the affairs of every other student. To this point, Bob has repeatedly emphasized the need for suggestion and complaint forms to be placed in the Danna center, available for the use of all the students. Through feedback from the SG A , and with the SGA's recognized duty to articulate the student's needs, much can be accomplished. Additionally, Bob's platform proposes I tree, full-time SG A check cashing program, and increasing the student ratio on UniversitD Committees, so the SG A can get a better idea of what happens in those committees. This proposal would be coupled with making the student representatives ex officio members of the S BA, and requiring them to report to the SG A . The Richard Frank Grant program will be continued, and expanded, where possible, to include the use of federal funds. A vote for Bob Tarcza on Monday or Tuesday is a vote for the return of the SGA'- from a money distributor to a true representative of the students. Fadden endorsed Uncharacteristic of most election years, this year's SGA Presidential candidates offer the unusual feature of quality. After reviewing the platforms and assessing the motivation of each candidate, the MAROON, for the first time in many years, is prepared to endorse a candidate for president of the Loyola Student Government Association. Loyola SGA is currently experiencing a radical transition. In the past two years it has moved from a largely intra-student body political forum to the beginnings of an organization which seeks to deal with the University administration to assure that we, as students receive our tuition's worth. Generally, this transition has been successful, and therefore, it is important that this progressive understanding be continued. By and large, the candidate who most understands Loyola University is Jim Fadden. After dealing with the SGA this past year as president of the A&S delegation and with the University as a member of the University Budget Committee, Mr. Fadden is knowledgeable of the mechanical aspects of the SGA as well as the established approach in dealing with the University. By a majority vote, it is the opinion of the MAROON Editorial Board that Jim Fadden is the candidate most sensitive to the SGA's transition. Additionally, he exhibits the creative imagination to add to the progress in establishing the Student Government Association as a organization. Jα
