MAROON Loyob University New Orleans, Louis'ana Volume 51 Number 17 March 6,1975 Attorney claims coed is cleared Above: Vice President of Student Affairs, Vincent P. Knipfing, must make decisions on discipline matters based on recommendations by the University Board of Review. Below: Student Board of Review members Thom Crandall and Angelo Nicolosi entering the hearing room in Danna Center Monday. J.P. COLEMAN SEAN WELCH Staff Reporter* A Loyola coed was cleared of charges of immoral conduct by the University Board of Review Monday, her attorney, a Tulane law student told the MAROON. It is the first time the Board has heard a case since its inception two years ago. The charges stemmed from a Head Resident's behavior report on February 18 accusing the girl of immoral behavior in her dorm room with a Tulane man. The girl's attorney, Leon Sanders, said she was "definitely cleared of the charges at specified in the behavior report." The Board "didn't find sufficient reason to believe she had done the things she was accused of," Sanders added. The Board's chairman, James J. McAulay, refused to discuss the action the Board has taken. Ms. Lynne Neitzschman, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, whose office has final authority to decide discipline matters, also refused to discuss the case. Members of the board and students involved said they were instructed not to comment. McAulay declined to say when the Board would meet to consider it's recommendations to the Student Affairs Office. Informed sources say the Board met Wednesday. The Office of Student Affairs would not comment on the purpose of the Wednesday meeting. McAulay said the Board was reconvened to "look over wrtiat we did." Neitzschman gave reasons for the secrecy surrounding the case. She said the Office of Student Affairs has a commitment to confidentiality in disciplinary matters. "Any personal discipline case is a personal matter, and students only hurt themselves by responding to student media." Neitzschman said a response on her part would compromise her ethics and harm the students involved. A reporter asked Knipfing how students were to know if the disciplinary system is working if it conducts its business in secrecy. Knipfing replied "if the system wasn't working there would be dissatisfaction by students." There appeared to be dissatisfaction last week among the members of the Board itself. Rev. James J. Pillar, 0.M.1., said his fellow members were "a bit miffed about procedure." In the case that went to the Board Monday the student was given a choice of going before the Board of the Dean of Student Affairs. The student chose to go before the Board. According to the Loyola Student Handbook the University Board of Review sends recommendations and findings to the Dean of Student Affairs for approval. Knipfing was asked what value the board had if its findings were sent to an individual for approval. PHOTO by Kath* O'CaimgHrni INSIDE STUDENT FORUM Free Coffee for Everyone?
