LOYOLA MAROON Vol. L no. 12 December 6, 1973 Loyola affiliate eyes Superdome TV contract By Louis N. Hodges Jr. MAROON STAFF REPORTER Loyola University will have a stake in the success or failure of the Louisiana Superdome through the ownership of the dome's in-house television station. While it may still be early to determine its effect on Loyola, the economic picture of the university could be greatly improved if the dome is a huge success. However, increased profits by WWL will not necessarily provide a tuition decrease. The contract, now being negotiated between university-owned WWL and the Superdome Commission, will include everything from telecasting football games to operation of the stadium's giant Superdome Superscreen. The original invitation to submit proposals according to the Superdome's director of television, Bob Jones, consisted of three basic demands. First, it called for operation of the Superscreen, a huge gondola suspended from the ceiling with six 26 X 22 foot television screcns. This will not only afford audiences the opportunity to see instant replays and watch action occurring at the opposite end of the field, but could also be used to telecast such events as the Indianapolis 500 and live Broadway shows. Secondly, it included maintenance and repair of all television facilities in the building. And it also called for permanent cabling of the building for TV. The proposal drawn up by WWL not only consisted of these three demands, but went beyond the basic requirements and offered the Superdome a complete in-house production company. "The first proposition was an installation job of cable," said J. Michael Early, vice president and general manager of WWL. "We sent a bid on their proposition and another for the total production and maintenance." According to Jones, WWL's concept should not only prove profitable for the station, but also as a money-saver for the dome's future tenants. For example, if NBC wishes to produce a TV special from the dome, they would probably find it cheaper to use the dome's TV facilities than to send their own personnel from New York. So while WWL will not have a monopoly on televisions rights in the dome, it will possess the in-house production company whose services may be contracted. WWL was the only station to submit a proposal to the Louisiana Superdome Commission. Jerry Romig, WDSU program director, said that only WWL had the equipment capable of meeting the Superdome's needs. "For Channel 6 to have been interested, it would have meant a massive investment," he said. Romig described WWL's move as having in effect "opened a subsidiary in the dome." The dome-Loyola's economic life may be invigorated by a proposed contract for the TV coverage within the New Orleans Superdome. The contract, still being negociated, includes everything from telecasting football games to operation of the Dome's giant Superscreen. Photo by Minh. Martha Fugate named new editor By Cheryl Michaels MAROON STAFF REPORTER Martha Fugate, who was appointed editor of the MAROON for next semester, plans to bring in students from every college to broaden the scope of the paper. "I am recruiting people outside of journalism to add perspective to our presentation of the news because we have a lot of experts on campus that we haven't reached," Fugate said. She also said that more emphasis will be placed on sports, entertainment and features. Fugate, who competed against Tara Leßlanc, MAROON Layout Editor, and Joan Quinters, journalism senior, for the position, said the "content of the newspaper has improved immensely" this semester but the "appearance has been very weak." She said she plans to improve the appearance by using shorter stories and more imaginative art. Fugate, selected by and MAROON Editorial Board and the journalism faculty also said she wants more cooperation between the communications department and the MAROON because readers benefit when information is shared. She said she wants to "develop rapport" with students and administrators. "I want them to know we are interested in covering every area on campus and need their cooperation in doing so," Fugate added. Fugate said a student newspaper is an outlet of expression for students. She has appointed Louis Hodges as Managing Editor, Beverly Peperone as Layout Editor, Brian Kensel as Sports Editor and Madelyn Mix as Business Manager. "A student newspaper is an instrument to bring about changes and it is effective in expressing students' opinions on campus," Fugate said. Fugate has worked for two years on the MAROON on various positions including Staff Reporters , Copy Editor, Assistant Layout Editor and Staff Representative for the Editorial Board. Fugate-Plans for the MAROON include more emphasis on sports, entertainment and features. Fugate, new MAROON editor, discusses this week's issue with outgoing editor, Bob Rayhawk. Photo by Steve Cain.
