vol. XLVIV no. 1 \ September 8, 1972 I loyola maroon Freshman orientation: Confusion!!! By Ron Tomczyk Confusion! That was my first real impression of college orientation. Orderly at times, hysterical at others, yet nonetheless, confusion. The provost's reception was a prime example of this. From the very beginning, people were running around without any idea of what they should be doing or where they should go. About the only attribute gained from this aura was the patience to wait on lines. Thursday's itinerary proved to be quite helpful for many reasons. I gained a further understanding of both the functions and ideals of each college, along with a great hangover the next morning. This later feat was accomplished with a great ease (with a little help from my friends and the town). Registration! Henceforth, when I hear this word, a chill will run up and down my spine. This little recipe consisted of a lot of confusion and a sprinkling of hysteria. I had it relatively easy, for my name fell under the first category of those to be cast to the lions; however, i pitied those who followed. The school could have shown a little compassion and distributed some Excedrin. However, they didn't and we just had to suffer. Saturday's and Sunday's activities showed me why this school is nicknamed "Camp Loyola." Activities were sporatic and without much advance notice. However, once they got started, they were carried on with that same confusion that permeated the rest of the day in the aforementioned functions. One of the few things I felt was a rewarding experience was a program called "Coping With College". It made me more open to the different experiences one could encounter on campus, along with a greater understanding of one's inner-self. On the whole, this orientation helped me. True, it was chaotic and confusing at times, yet it seems the only way it could be accomplished. I think it should be kept, if for no other reason than to shake up the incoming freshmen. Fr.
