XLVI Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Tuesday, January 27, 1970 No. 14 VP candidate refuses offer By MIKE LANGE (Maroon Editor) The Board of Directors could not come up with a replacement for the Rev. Thomas Clancy, S.J., over the holidays, so, until June 1, Father Clancy will remain as vice president for academic affairs. As he put it in a recent interview, "I'm still sitting in the chair.. .1 am the vice president." Father Clancy, who has been vice president for academic affairs since September, 1968, was attacked by the University Senate at an emergency meeting of that body January 15. A motion by Louis Sutker of the Department of Psychology in which the Senate "takes exception to and deplores procedural misuage by the present vice president for academic affairs (Father Clancy)" was passed by a 28-1 vote with one abstention. In addition to this action, the Senate attempted to oust Father Clancy by requesting, in a motion by Ralph Bell, chairman of the Department of Journalism, that the Board of Directors choose the next vice president from one of the three names submitted for the position by the Search Committee. A member of the faculty coalition which had backed this motion said he had received information that Father Clancy's name had not been one of the three submitted. Father Clancy admitted in the Student Council hearings Jan. 19 that he knew that his name was not submitted. OFFICIAL STATEMENT The Board of Directors, the legal owners of the University, met Jan. 22 with the topic of the academic vice president on the agenda. The Board released only this statement from their six-and-a-half hour meeting: The President (the Very Rev. Homer R. Jolley, S.J.) presented all three names proposed by the Search Committee to the Board of Directors. The Board approved one name. This person refused the position. The other two names were not approved by the Board of Directors." The Maroon contacted the Rev. John Mullahy, S.J., chairman of the biology department and member of the Board, after the meeting and he said that it could be concluded that Father Gancy would not continue in office past June 1. A reliable source said the Board voted 7-2 to have a new academic vice president by June Ist. The Board is expected to '/ am the vice president' Father Clancy meet again next month to further discuss the issue. The Rev. Michael Kennelly, chairman of the Board, left for Houston immediately after the meeting and the Maroon has been unable to contact him there since Friday. In the absence of a spokesman for the Board, there has been no official word as to what transpired at the Jan. 21 meeting. The Board was also presented with motions from the University Senate concerning the removal of Dean Frank Crabtree of A&S from office and the statement of Faculty Rights, Freedoms and Responsibilities. (See minutes of Senate meeting on page 2). Father Mullahy said, in an interview, "All other motions that were brought up were rejected, but not all motions were brought before the Board. "I think you can teli that I'm not too happy about what happened," he said, while refusing to say what did happen. "Most of the things I was for did not get through." He added, "Everybody (on the Board) felt pretty frustrated one way or the other." Father Mullahy worked with certain members of the University Senate in their movement to oust Father Clancy and Dr. Crabtree. He showed support for the Senate's motions in the hearing by the Student Council Jan. 19. CHANGED MIND At those same hearings, Father Clancy said, "It would be awkward for me to stay here (Loyola).. .One way or another, they have succeeded in getting rid of me. . .Unless he (Father Jolley) defends me on some of these (accusations), I won't serve even another week." In an interview Friday, Father Clancy said he did not feel this way any longer. "I feel I've been vindicated," he said. He would not say what happened at the meeting that would have caused him to change his mind. "I don't want to break the bad news to them (the members of the University Senate)," he said. He said he was not going to forget the events of the past two weeks, but he would not comment on what plans he had for the future. "I'm not going to publish my strategy in the Maroon," he said, while adding, "There will be some very interesting developments." FATHER CLANCY 'There will be... Senate starts controversy By LOUIS LASSUS (Maroon Managing Editor) The start of what could become a major shift in the administrative personnel of Loyola was initiated at an emergency meeting of the University Senate during the holidays. During the meeting on January 15, the Senate asked that the Board of Directors remove Dr. Frank Crabtree, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, from office. During the five hour session the Senate also passed a motion reprimanding Rev. Thomas H. Clancy, S.J., Vice President for Academic Affairs, for "procedural misusage" in some of his dealings with the faculty. Another motion passed requested that the Board of Directors limit the selection of the permanent Vice President for Academic Affairs to the list submitted to the Very Rev. President Homer R. Jolley, S.J. by the Academic Vice President Search Committee. The Senate also decided to establish a direct line of communication between the Board of Directors and the Senate through a Senate committee and requested that the Board adopt the Senate's Document of Faculty Rights, Freedoms and Responsibilities as the basis for faculty contracts. The motion requesting that Dean Students, faculty split over issue By BRUCE NOLAN (Maroon Desk Editor) In an emergency holiday meeting the A&S representatives of the Student Council voted last week to repudiate the University Senate's censure of the Rev. Thomas Clancy, S.J., vice president for academic affairs. In addition, the council members delivered a slim five to four vote of confidence to Dr. Frank Crabtree, dean of the College of Arts and Science (A&S). The student vote came five days after a special session of the senate which produced a motion requesting that the Board of Directors remove Dr. Crabtree from office for what the senate alleged were violations of academic procedure. There have been emergency meetings, closed meetings, unprocedural meetings all of which have left the majority of the campus confused as to what should be done next. The Maroon believes that the happenings of the past weeks mark a turning point in Loyola's development.
