The Loyola Maroon Vol. XLIII Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Friday, October 21 ,1966 No. 4 12 Coed Favorites Nominated For LU Court By SUSAN MICHIE Campus Beauties . . . Nominees for Campus Queen and Court are: top row (left to right) Charlotte Simms, Anne Higgins, Sally Droppelman, Cheri Weil. Center row, (left to right) Diane David, Sue Breaud, Mary Ann Sterck, Janetanne Lemarie. Bottom row, (left to right) Janie Maher, Charlotte Joint, Karen Richard, and Judy Fremaux. Twelve coed favorites were nominated as finalists for the 1966 Homecoming Court in preliminary elections held this week. Final balloting for the selection of a Campus Queen and six maids, one of whom will be an evening division student, will take place Monday and Tuesday. The queen and her court, who will reign over Homecoming activities for the year, are to be officially presented at the annual Blue Key Talent Night, December 3. The nominees chosen by the student body are: Sue Breaud, A&S junior and native New Orleanian, is a member of LSL, Theta Phf Alpha Sorority, the Women's Recreation Association and a former wolfette. Sue was a Campus Maid last year, ROTC Company "B" sponsor, and a member of the Freshman Sweetheart Court. Diane David, a junior from New Orleans, was also on the Freshman Sweetheart Court and a wolfette. Diane is currently sweetheart of Sigma Alpha Kappa fraternity, a member of LSL and publicity chairman for Theta Phi Alpha sorority. Sally Droppelman, BA senior from Louisville, Ky., was a member of the Campus Court last year and is presently sweetheart of Alpha Delta Gamma fraternity. She is a member of the Women's Residence Council, and representative to the Panhellenic Council for Theta Phi Alpha sorority. Judy Fremaux, A&S junior, is a member of Phi Phi Phi sorority, the Women's Recreation Association and the dance and entertainment committee of the Student Union. Judy hails from New Orleans. Anne Higgini, also of New Orleans, is an Elementary Education major in her sophomore year. She was a member of the Freshman Swteetheart Court and serves this year as secretary of the pledge class of Theta Phi Alpha sorority. Anne also devotes her time to LSL, the Women's Recreation Association and the Elementary Education Club. Charlotte Joint, a junior marketing major and a New Orleanian, belongs to Phi Chi Theta, business fraternity, and is a member of the Women's Recreation Association, the dance and entertainment committee of the Student Union. She serves as parliamentarian of LSL and historian of Phi Phi Phi sorority. Janetanne Lemarie, a sophomore secondary education major, participates in LSL, the Women's Recreation Association, the Hospitality Committee of the Student Union, and is a former wolfette. Janetanne also serves as secretary of the pledge class of Phi Phi Phi sorority. Janie Maher, BA junior from New Orleans, is a member of Cardinal Key, on the executive board of Spiritus, LSL, and former captain of the Wolfettes. A Freshman Sweetheart, Janie was on last year's Campus Court and is social chairman of Theta Phi Alpha sorority. Janie serves as business representative on the Student Council and is on the Dean's List. Karen Richard, A&S sophomore from New Orleans, was a wolfette, a member of the Freshman Sweetheart Court, ROTC Band sponsor and reigns now as the first petal in the Rose of Delta Sigma Pi. Karen is a member of LSL, the dance and entertainment committee of the Student Union and a pledge of Phi Phi Phi sorority. Charlotte Simms, A&S sophomore from Ormand Beach, Fla., was on the Freshman Sweetheart Court, a wolfette, and is a member of LSL, the hospitality committee of the Student Union, and LUSHA. A dean's list student, Charlotte is a pledge of Theta Phi Alpha sorority. Mary Anne Sterck, A&S senior from Miami, Fla., is a former wolfette, a member of LSL and the Pershing Rifle Sponsor. A Campus Maid for two years, Mary Anne presently serves as corresponding secretary of Theta Phi Alpha sorority.Cheri Weil, a junior in Medical Technology from New Orleans, is a cheerleader, a mem- Flanagan To Vacate IAC Post George E. Flanagan, executive director of the Inter-American Center, will be leaving on Oct. 31 after 27 months as seminar director. In appreciation of continued service to the Center, he was awarded a plaque by the twelfth graduating class of the seminar. The ceremonies were held recently in Danna Center. He has directed the center since its inception in 1964 The plaque was also inscribed "to the administrative and teaching personnel of the Inter- American Center". Graduating students, who were public health and social workers from Latin America, underwent six weeks of social, political, and economic training in order to assist them as leaders in their countries. Three Receive Chem. Grants Undergraduate Research Participation Grants were awarded to three Loyola chemistry students. Linda Heindl, John P. Mykytka, and Gary E. Sander were granted the $200 stipends by the National Science Foundation. The grants are given to outstanding chemistry majors who, in return, do parttime research during their academic year. The grants serve to stimulate undergraduate interest in research and better prepare the recipients for graduate work. All resulting research will be supervised oy members of the chemistry department. N.O. Symphony Orchestra Presents Performance In Fieldhouse Sunday The New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra will present a "music for all ages" concert in the Loyola Fieldhouse Sunday at 8 p.m. Conducted by Werner Torkanowsky, the 88-member orchestra will play six selections in the two-hour performance which is sponsored by the Student Union and the Student Council. The performance will be the sixth of the season for the orchestra, now in its fourth season with Torkanowsky as music director and conductor. Born in Germany, Torkanowsky recently has won a number of coveted honors for his conducting, among them the Naumberg Award and citations from Menotti's Music Festival at Spoleto, Italy, and the new Mozart Festival at Philharmonic Hall in New York. Torkanowsky, who made a great hit during the last four seasons as guest conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony and the New York Philharmonic, scored as guest conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra last November.Recently the recipient of extensive grants from the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, the orchestra boasts of three distinguished firsts: —the first American orchestra to be sent on a State Department sponsored tour of Latin America (April, 1956); —the first Southern orchestra to ever make a full-scale "invasion" of the North (Feb., 1959); —the first Southern symphony to tour deep into the heart of the Mid-west (Feb., 1960). Admission for Loyola students, faculty and staff will be with validated ID card.
