The Loyola Maroon Vol. XLII Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Friday, March 25, 1966 No. 16 13 Named To Blue Key Thirteen men have been named to Loyola's chapter of Blue Key, national honor fraternity. They are: J. Matt Lanius, music senior, James U. "Jud" Downs, law senior, William R. Leary, law senior, Will J. Jones, Dentistry junior, Daniel L. Diamond, A&S senior, Robert H. Giardina, A&S junior, David W. Moore, A&S junior, Peter G. Jaramillo, BA senior, Joseph M, Murphy Jr., BA senior, Steven O. Medo, BA senior, Louis J. Meyer, BA junior, John E. Stephens, BA senior, and Frank J. Oliveri Jr., Evening Division. Membership in Blue Key is a mark of outstanding leadership, service and noteworthy scholastic achievements. The public tapping will be held Sunday at noon in the a la carte dining room, Danna Center. Formal Initiation is set for April 24 at the annual Blue Key banquet. J. MATT LANUS is a senior in the College of Music. A major in Music Therapy, he has written a number of original compositions for voice. Lanius hails from Alexandria, La. He has served as president of music shcool for the past two years, is a member of Phi Lamda Mu professional fraternity and Upsilon Beta Lambda, social fraternity. Lanius was a co-winner in the New Orleans Concerto Contest and a Paderewski Medal winner. After graduation, Lanius will serve his internship at the Central Louisiana State Hospital in Pineville. WILL J. JONES is a junior in Dentistry from Covington, La. He is a member of C. Victor Vignes Odontological Society, the American Society of Dentistry for Children and Xi Psi Phi fraternity. Jones served as pledge master last year, rush chairman and representative on the Dental School Interfraternity Council for his fraternity this year. He has been a representative to the Junior American Dental Association for the past two years. Jones graduated from LSU in Baton Rouge in '63 with a B.A. degree in Chemistry. He is working as a research assistant in Cardio-Vascular diseases for the LSU School of Medicine. Jones is the recipient of a National Health Institute Research Grant in the field of Periodontology. ROBERT H. GIARDINA is a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences from New Orleans. He is majoring in physics and minoring in math. Giardina plans to enter graduate school. Being active in a number of organizations, he still maintains a 3.9 average. Giardina is treasurer of APO, president of the Michelson Physics Society, treasurer of Sigma Pi Sigma physics honor society, and a member of Alpha Sigma Nu national Jesuit honor scholastic society and the Student Union Recreation Committee. He has held a National Science Foundation Research Grant in Physics for the past three years. STEVEN O. MEDO of New Orleans is a senior in the College of Business Administration majoring in accounting. He plans to enter Law School in the fall. Medo is president of Beta Gamma Sigma national business fraternity, treasurer of the Student Union, Justice on the Student Judicial Court, a member of Delta Sigma Pi professional business fraternity, Beta Alpha national honorary accounting society and Alpha Sigma Nu national Jesuit honor society. JOHN E. STEPHENS is a math major in the College of Business Administration. He is from New Orleans. Stephens was president of SAK social fraternity for two years. He is a member of Rho Phi Theta honorary math society. He was on the Varsity Baseball Team for three years and Captain last year. Stephens signed a professional baseball contract with the Baltimore Orioles and played with them last summer. Stephens will be in the Air Force Reserve this summer and plans to enter Law School in the fall. JOSEPH M. MURPHY JR. is an accounting major in the College of Business Administration from New Orleans. He is a Lieutenant Commander in ROTC, president of Beta Alpha Psi national honorary accounting fraternity, president of the Association of the United States Army, president of the Redemptorist Holy Name Society, vice-president of Scahbard and Blade, and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma national honorary business administration fraternity. Murphy is also a member of Who's Who. He plans to work toward his Masters Degree in accounting in night school after graduation.JAMES U. DOWNS is a senior in Law School from Shreveport. He is president of the Law School and a member of the Student Bar Association and Delta Theta Phi national law fraternity. Downs is a 1963 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. Upon graduation from Law School he will enter the service. FRANK J. OLIVERI JR. is an accounting major in the Evening Division. He is president of the Evening Division and has served as chairman for several entertainment committees of the Evening Division. Oliveri is employed with Fred Lake, CPA, also a member of Blue Key. DANIEL L. DIAMOND is a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences from Covington, La. A pre-med student majoringmajoring in biology, he plans to enter Tulane Medical School in the fall. Diamond is president of Agramonte Pre-Medical Society and a member of Beta Beta Beta national honor biology society. He is a justice on the Student Judicial Court and was dorm monitor for two years. DAVID W. MOORE is a political science major from New Orleans. A junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, he is student body president of the college. Moore has been on the Student Council for two years. He is a member of Alpha Delta Gamma social fraternity. PETER G. JARAMILLO is a senior in Business Administration from New Orleans. He is president of the College of Business Administration and DOWNS JONES JARAMILLO MURPHY STEPHENS LANIUS OLIVERI LEARY GIARDINA MOORE MEYER MEDO DIAMOND Aquilar Wins Chess Finals Pompay Aquilar, inter- American student beat Kevin Dogherty, A&S freshman, in the finals of the Loyola Chess tournament. The four day tournament was run under round robin rules, which involves two sets of round robin play. The ten contestants were divided into two sets of five and after a round robin two finalists were drawn from each group. Then the four played off for the championship. The other two finalists were John May and Dick Georges. Aquilar will receive a chess clock as first prize and Dogherty will receive a trophy.Murphy Slays Sinclair In Saga Hold-up Jeff Sinclair, A&S freshman, was killed Wednesday afternoon in in attempt to stop a fleeing bandit after the 12:30 p.m. holdup of the A La carte dining room cashier in Danna Center. Hooked after the slaying on charge! (if murder while committing a felony was Bill Murphy, A&S senior. According to David Levy, investigator for the New Orleans Police Department, Murphy walked from the serving line toward the cashier with a cup :Df coffee in one hand and a gun camouflaged by a coat in the other. When he reached the cashier, he put the cup down and reached over the open cash register, picked up the cash box, and told the cashier, Mrs. Coril Melerine, that he'd "blow a hole through her" if she didn't cooperate. Levy said that Murphy took the cash box and started his escape toward the Danna Center lobby. Jeff Sinclair, who was sitting a* a table with his girl friend saw the hold-up take place, and jumped up to stop the fleeing robber. A scuffle ensued, and Sinclair was shot in the abdoiv.en. Both the gun and Sinclair's body fell to the floor. .Murphy knelt down over the body, and was found that way when the police arrived to take him into custody. Shaken up by 'he incident, all Sinclair's alledged girll'liend, Joan D'Antoni, A&S junior, could say was "He's a real nice guy. He'd never hurt anyone. It's always nice peoplepeople who try to help others that get hurt." Pete Van Auken, a witness, said he saw Murphy walk away from the cashier with a cash box and a gun. "I then saw a student try t.) stop him," Van Auken said," and then they tied up. The next thing I knew, the gun went off. The shooting looked more acidental than intended." Charles Brennan, director of university development, in the faculty dining room when he heard the shot, said. "I turned As Murphy was being led out of Danna Center for Police Headquarters, university photographer, Russell Cresson who was taking pictures for the press said he has known the killer for a number of years and that his character had been questionable. At present Murphy is free pending investigation. He has Assessment Fee Of Cards Invalid The Student Court has ruled that the two dollar assessment fee on itudent ID cards at a condition for voting iD not valid because the motion had not been formalized by the Student Council, announced Tom Sartory, Council president. Dick Derbes, Law School representative, was the plaintiff who brought the matter before the Student Court. He cited that only a small percentage of students in Law School had ID cards and that this would present a difficulty in their elections and voting. Those who have not paid the two dollars may get an ID card by asking for one at the Student Government office where there is a list of their names.
