the MAROON Friday, March 4, 1960 Loyola University WELCOME LOUISIANA COLLEGE CONFERENCE Enrollment Rise Theme Of Meeting "The Effect of Expanding Enrollment on the College Curriculum" is the theme of the 22nd annual Louisiana College Conference which opens today at Loyola University.Three hundred educators from 15 Louisiana colleges and universities are expected to take part. Registration will take place today from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the main lobby of Marquette Hall at Loyola and from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Jung Hotel in downtown New Orleans. Registration may also be made tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the university. All sectional meetings will be held on the Loyola campus. Meeting rooms are: Agriculture, Marquette Hall, Room 30; Commerce, Marquette 33; Deans, Marquette Auditorium; Education, Marquette 31; English, Marquette 34; Health and Physical Education, Marquette 37; Home Economics, Marquette 36. Also Journalism, Librarians, Marquette 43; Mathematics, Marquette 44; Modern and Classical Languages, Marquette 42; Music and Visual Arts, College of Music; Natural Science, Marquette 47; Nursing, Marquette 32; Personnel and Guidance, Marquette 35; Registrars, Marquette 46; Social Science, Stallings, 200; Speech, Stallings 202. The first general session will be held at a banquet today at 8 p.m. in the Jung Hotel. MARQUETTE HALL, main Loyola University building, is headquarter* of the Louisiana College Conference. Registration is in the main lobby of the second floor. Classrooms numbered in the 30's are on the third floor and in the 40's are on the fourth. Detailed maps are available at the registration desk. LCC Bulletin Board Special LCC Edition The Telephones Conference participants are invited to use the phones in the Public Relations and Evening Division offices on the second floor of Marquette Hall. Dial "9" for an outside line. Pay phone booths are located on the ground floor of Marquette near the book store. Taxi, Please Cabs will be on hand in the horseshoe or at the front of Thomas Hall Friday from 5:30 p.m. on following Father Donnelly's reception. Parking For You Parking in the horseshoe in front of Marquette Hall has been reserved exclusively for conference participants from 8 a.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. Saturday. Breakfast Time The Loyola cafeteria will be open for breakfast from 7 a.m. Saturday. It is also open Friday afternoon. Banquet Time A choice of meat or fish will be offered at the banquet. Please purchase tickets early and indicate choice. Tickets are on sale at $3.50 at the registration desk. Street Car Named St. Charles One of the nicest ways to see beautiful St. Charles avenue is a street car ride. Take the trolley heading south in front of the university and enjoy a 20-minute ride to Canal Street past some of the city's finest homes. Other Sights To See Other interesting places near Loyola are Audubon Park, with one of the South's largest zoos; Tulane University, next door; St. Mary's Dominican College, a few blocks north on St. Charles and Sugar Bowl Stadium, on Willow near Calhoun. The mighty Mississippi can be seen flowing toward the sea'if you stand on the levee at Carrollton and St. Charles a few blocks north of Loyola. Election Slated Saturday New officers of the Louisiana College Conference will be elected at the general session Saturday at 9 a.m. in Marquette Auditorium. Present officers are William F. Beyer, Northwestern State College, president; John R. Timmerman, Louisiana College, vice-president; and Walter M. Lowery, Nicholls State College, secretarytreasurer.Members of the executive committee are Mary Frances Fletcher, Louisiana Polytechnic Institute; Helen B. Gordon, Louisiana State University, and C. J. Hyde, Southeastern Louisiana College. Your President Dr. William F. Beyer, Jr., assistant to the dean of education, Northwestern State College at Natchitoches, is president of the Louisiana College Conference. Pres. Gibson, Dean Vonk To Address General Sessions Joseph E. Gibson, president of Gulf park College, Gulf port, Miss., and Dr. Paul Vonk, dean of the University College, University of Miami, Fla., will address the two general sessions of the 22nd annual Louisiana College Conference today and tomorrow at Loyola University. President Gibson will speak on "Higher Education Faces the Rising Tide" at the first session today at 8 p.m. in the Jung Hotel. Dr. Vonk's address will be given tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Marquette Auditorium at Loyola University. His topic will be "A Place to Stand." A native of West Point, Mi**., president Gibaon received hi* B.A. at the University of Mi**i«- tippi and M.A. at Columbia University.From 1941-46 he was Director of Higher Education for the State of Louisiana. In 1947 he was appointed president of Northwestern State College, Natchitoches, La. Associated with Tulane University for a number of years, president Gibson served in the capacity of professor of education, director of development and director of preadmissions.Dr. Vonk is a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He received his A.B. from Calvin College in 1935; his M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1939, and his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1951. He joined the University of Miami in 1948 as assistant professor of philosophy. Since the University College will not be inaugurated until September, 1960, Dr. Vonk still holds the titles of assistant dean, College of Arts and Sciences, and professor of philosophy. He is also the director of the University of Miami honors program. DR. PAUL K. VONK PRES. JOSEPH E.
