The MAROON Vol. XXXVI No. 17 Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Friday, April 17, 1959 MAN SLAIN IN LIBRARY Moot Court Begins Thespian Star Tells His Side By KIT HARGER Stubby Al Monlezun, often cited for his dramatic roles in campus Thespian plays, resorted to a different role when interviewed by this reporter in his jail cell Wednesday.Never known as the quiet, shy type, Monlezun gave only the sketchiest of comments concerning his involvement in the fatal "shooting" of A&S sophomore John Barrois, during a violent argument between the two in the university library Wednesday morning. Usually cheerful and garrulous, the 21-year-old phytic* major was sullen and low-spoken as he related the morning's events. "I had found a shortage of $1200 in our joint account," Monlezun muttered; "so naturally I confronted John and asked why he had withdrawn the money." He claimed that when Barrois had refused to tell him why he had taken the money an argument ensued during which Barrois grabbed a knife lying on the library table and made threatening advances towards him. According; to Monlezun Carol Hintz, A&S freshman, who wat sitting with Barrois, attempted to prevent hit action but he pushed her "gruffly" aside. Holding his head in his hands, Monlezun falteringly continued, "Since I had decided earlier to withdraw the rest of our savings I had taken my gun for protection. I pulled it out in self-defense and shot at him, then I ran out and went to the police . . . that's all there is to it." Monlezun had said that he and Barrois had gone into partnershipPolice Charge Al Monlezun Caught! By HIL LEIBE and KIT HARGER A 19-year old A&S sophomore who serves as staff cartoonist for The Maroon and Wolf was "shot to death" during an argument early Wednesday in the university library. Patrolman Arnold reported that Vincent Manguno, A&S senior, was sitting across from the two men when they started arguing about some money. "The argument began in a mild manner," Manguno laid, "and then became progressiTely violent. Monlezun stood up and Barrois taid, 'Sit down, Al . . . you'll get it tomorrow,' and started wrestling with a girl because she was trying to calm 'em down," he said. "Monlezun tried to stop him and Barrois pulled a knife. Monlezun just whipped out a gun and shot him," Manguno said. Janice Bodet, A&S senior, who was sitting at the same table with the two students, sad that after the "shooting" Monlezun fled the scene in a hurry. "He appeared to be panic-stricken," she said. Mrs. Catherine Martin, university librarian, stated that she heard loud voices and started into the reading room to investigate. She scene of the crime and was almost knocked down by the fleeing Monlezun.Dr. Rafael C. Sanchez, assistant coroner of Orleans Parish, was called to the scene by Gayle Wurzlow, A&S sophomore. He said that a preliminary investigation showed that Barrois had died of a gun-shot wound in the chest. Sanchez said that an autopsy of the body would be made to determine the actual cause of "death." AL MONLEZUN He's A Dead Duck Now!
