LU ENDOWMENT DRIVE BEGINS (■ee story below) The maroon Vol. XXXVI Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Friday, February 20, 1959 No. 13 Alumni Kicks Off Drive With Blast ALUMNI AFIRE—MISS CECELIA LASHLEY, alumni secretary, gets the symbolic ball rolling at the endowment banquet held at the campus cafeteria last Sunday night. With sparklers held high she lights the torch to a spirited endowment fund drive, which has as its goal 2500 donors. Approximately 250 alumni class agents attended the endowment banquet held last Sunday in an attempt to foster interest in the project. Forum Speaker MAJOR ALEXANDER P. DE SEVERSKY (tee story page 3) Judge Bagert To Head Drive Over 250 alumni class agents launched the university's 1959 endowment fund drive with a goal of 2500 contributors at a banquet Sunday night in the cafeteria. Theme of the banquet, which featured talks by university Last year the fund drive netted $26,587 from 1751 donors. Discussing the need for the drive, Criminal District Court Judge Bernard J. Bagert, general chairman of this year's campaign, said that the university's enrollment is expected to double in the next 10 years. "It is through the efforts of the alumni that the university can expect to take care of this influx. Students now attending Loyola pay less than 50 per cent of the total amount necessary for their education," he said. The Very Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S.J., university president, called the alumni the most important element in the university. He said that Loyola must count on its alumni in order to complete its "Program of Progress" now underway at the university. "With your help the first phase of the building program will soon new science building," he said. Speaking of the pride the alumni should have in the university, the Rev. Edward A.
