The LOYOLA MAROON * 1961-62 1912 * Loyola's Golden Anniversary Year No. 2 Vol. XXXVIV Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Friday, September 22, 1961 'Jan' party to roll; Initiation perils listed By GAYE SAUCIER Freshmen beware! Reliable sources report upperclassmen plan an "interesting" afternoon of initiation today. In case you're shivering your timbers already, here's a hint. Last year the recipe for initiation consisted mostly of mud puddles, flour, blindfolds and sacks. However, a peace treaty will be made later tonight at the annual Jambalaya dance sponsored by the Student Council. The event is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the fieldhouse. Beginning the festivities is the traditional fraternity songfest. Members of the brawling four have been feverishly practicing and tidying up their larynxes in order to give the frosh their opinions (through song) of life at Loyola U. Yes, tonight all the skeleton's in the campus closets ■ will be aired. Interest in the songfest is high. Beggars has won the competition for the last two years and the other three frats are practicing hard trying to destroy this record. Last year the fraternities gave their renditions of "When The Saints Go Marching in" and "With a Little Bit of Luck" (with different words of course). This year, well, who knows., to what, or what will be included in their numbers. Following the songfest, dirty tennis shoes, slippers and what have you will be shed as everyone flocks to the fieldhouse floor to dance to the music of the "Con- The dance will bring to a climax a hectic week of freshmen singing in the quadrangle, frantic dorm initiations and beanie wearing. For you unfortunate freshmen who didn't get in on the dorm initiation here's what you Just picture yourself absolutely exhausted from freshmen orientation and positively petrified from becoming acquainted with all those hard, hard teachers. Bed time nears and you think how wonderful it will be to relax. Suddenly, at 2 a.m. you are awakened by all the upperclassmen in the dorms, who you thought were rather sophisticated, but now they just appear as a wild tribe of savages.First comes the shaving cream which is squirted all over those pretty white sheets mother told you to take care of. Then you're blindfolded and thrust into an icy cold shower. Good for the health, you know. Things are going okay until they blindfold you and lead you to a candlelight ceremony. All at once your spine goes to jelly as you feel something being rubbed on your face and someone says, "Oh, no, not the hot coal!" Don't panic, frosh, it's only ice. All this is done in fun, of course, and some freshmen even like this mild hazing. A group of enthusiastic boys, we're told, thought the freshmen initiation was proceeding too mildly and took razors to their heads Tuesday. Though it hasn't been recommended that all male frosh become Yul Bryners, cooperation certain- The Inside Story By EUGENE KATSANIS Cadet reviews camp humor Can you imagine spending six weeks summer vacation absolutely free, expenses paid by the federal government? This is what 36 Loyolans did this summer at Fort Hood for advance ROTC cadet training. The Maroon co-editor and ROTC ;adet 2nd Lt. John Quigley, tries to overlook the bitter, tragic and iisastrous aspects of summer camp md looks at humorous side. Unconcerned with the explosive ground on which they trekked, these culture-minded students frequented the continent's high spots from Madame Tussard's wax museum to the salt mines of Salzburg. Loyola's ambassadors of good will, however, found time for a more serious event, an audience with His Holiness, Pope John. Edward A. Doyle, university vice president. The increase is found in the upperclassmen enrollment which is 24.4 per cent more than in 1960. However, the freshmen enrollment decreased 20 per cent. Though registration is not complete, present statistics show the college of arts and sciences has 1,079 undergraduates enrolled; the college of business administration, 330; the school of dentistry, 221; the school of law, 241; the college of pharmacy, 61; the college of music, 60; evening division, 513; industrial relations, 3SI, and in-service graduate school, 120. The upperclassmen enrollment is up 25 per cent in arts and sciences, 28 per cent in business administration and 16.6 per cent in music. The only school which reported a freshmen enrollment increase was the college of music with 58.3 per cent more than last year. Freshmen enrollment in arts and sciences decreased 19.2 per cent and business administration 33.5 per cent. Statistics for freshmen enrollment reveal there are 140 men and 171 women in arts and sciences; 67 men and 20 women in business administration, and eight men and 11 women in the college of music. There are 278 men and 302 women upperclassmen enrolled in arts and sciences; 176 men and 66 women in business administration and 16 men and 19 women in music.freshman choir SING FROSH!—At the demand of an uppercla.sman, EILEEN WHEELER directs as (left to right), CAMILLE FONTENOT, PHYLLIS BIRZTEN and JUDY LATTIS sing the Loyola fight song during freshman initiation. Council approves resolutions of NSA, parking committes day evening in the student • lounge. The NSA resolution recommended that a new committee be appointed to again meet with the Rev. Robert Boggs, S.J., Council moderator, to "attempt to clarify the issues." It was further recommended that a report be submitted at the next meeting. In a statement to The Maroon, Father Boggs said that it would be entirely all right with him if the Council wanted to hold the referendum or vote themselves on NSA at the end of this year. "As I told the members of the Student Council and members of the NSA committee this organization was approved last year by Father Boggs said. "Just as the Apologetics club is no longer on the campus because it was voted out by the last year's council, so too is the NSA on campus because it was voted in by last year's Council. When the organizations are reviewed by the council at the end of the year, if they see fit to vote out the NSA or vote in the NSA, it's all right with me. "If some member* of the Council are not satisfied on the vote and want to bring it to the students in a referendum it would be entirely in order, and I would have no objection," Father Boggs said. The parking resolution recommendedAppoint Dr. Moron education chairman The appointment of Dr. Thomas J. Moran as the acting chairman of the department of education, was announced by the Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S.J., president of Loyola. Dr. Moran, who succeeds the Rev. J. F. Whelan, S.J., received his masters degree from Harvard university and his doctorate from the University of Ottawa in Canada in 1958. Dr. Moran will also assume the post of director of student teaching.(See COUNCIL, page 3)
