              The MAROON No. 3 Vol. XXXVI Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Friday, October 10, 1958 Testimonial Dinner To Honor Dr. Arnold On November 15 Move To Impeach Schiro Nixed By Council By JUDY BROCK Hundreds of former Loyolans and just "plain old friends" will pay homage to Dr. John G. "Doc" Arnold at a testimonial banquet Saturday, November 15 in the Jung Hotel. "Doc" Arnold, chairman of the university's department of medical technology since 1935, will be cited for his work at the university which reaches the 25-year mark this fall. When "Doc" organized the med tech department it was the only full time academic department of its kind in this part of the country. Since then, 350 students have been graduated, trained for hospital work, research, and for professional studies in graduate and medical schools. There are 65 students in the department of medical technology today compared with the seven med tech majors in Dr. Arnold's first class. Dan E. Stapp, LLB '57, is general chairman of the "Committee to Honor Dr. Arnold." Members of the steering committee are Dr. Wallace M. Nicaud, Jr., Henry J. Engler, Jr., Joseph Bologna, Dr. Ed Levy, Jean Williams Charbonnet, J. D. Vinci, and Marcel Garsaud. Dr. Arnold came to Loyola in 1934 as professor of biology, chairman of the department of biology, and faculty advisor for pre-medical and pre-dental students. Familiar names to Loyolans who were in "Doc's" first biology class include the Rev. Robert L. Boggs, S.J., now dean of students; Henry J. Engler, Jr., dean of the college of business administration; Lawrence Strohmeyer, associate professor of physics and mathematics; and the Rev. Claude E. Valentine, S.J., biologist at Jesuit High in Dallas. During World War 11, "Doc" became Captain Arnold and helped to establish the first malarial school on Guadalcanal. Aside from these two years in the service, the 49-year-old educator has spent over half of his life at Loyola. The only non-dental honorary member of the New Orleans Dental Association, Dr. Arnold is also the only honorary member of all four social fraternities on the campus. He is also the long time moderator of Blue Key national honor fraternity. He and his wife, the former Marian O'Laughlin, have two daughters, Mrs. Gerald C. Keller and Mrs. Emile C. Toups, both Loyola med tech grads. Commenting on his long association with the university. Dr. Arnold says, 'The last 25 years at Loyola have been happy, full, and satisfying years. ARNOLD McGoey Initiates Ouster Action By KIT HARGER An impeachment move against Gasper Schiro, student council vice president, was voted down at the council's weekly meeting Tuesday. Schiro was "charged" with revealing a student council vote in a letter he sent to The Maroon last week. The letter was published.The move to impeach Schiro was initiated by Tom McGoey, BA representative on the council. The council voted down the move overwhelmingly. The "nay" vote was not counted officially by this reporter, but only three voted for the impeachment. Voting along with McGoey were Bob Wilkie and Danny Matthews, both A&S representatives. Schiro's letter was written in explanation of a student council letter published the same issue which attacked The Maroon for "an outright violation of journalistic ethics" in the recent "L" Book controversy.McGoey charged that in disclosing the council's vote on the decision to send the letter to The Maroon or not, Schiro acted in direct violation to a student council decision. The vote was 13 for, 10 against, two abstaining, with five members absent. "We must be consistent," McGoey said, "and since Schiro has violated a council vote I think some penalty should be inflicted."Jerry Hoskins, council president, said that he did not have the authority to inflict a penalty without a council vote since Schiro was elected by the student body and is therefore under the council itself. Mc- Goey then called for an impeachment proceeding.Schiro said that he did not write the letter on behalf of the student council but was simply expressing his own opinion. "If you will note, I used the pronoun "I" throughout the letter," Schiro said; "and I only used my title as a student council officer because it U my title." Chorus To Appear JL JL The 40 man United States Army Chorus will appear in a special concert Wednesday at 12 noon in the quadrangle, announced Henry W. Asher, Jr., campus director of social events. The world famous group, under the direction of Captain Samuel Loboda, will be in New Orleans to participate in International Week festivities October 12-18. Each member of the group is a hand picked professional, accepted only after thorough auditions, Asher said. Members are usually graduates of a well known university, conservatory, or school of music who have a highly developed background of solo and ensemble appearances in the professional field. The chorus has toured the U. S. and army installations throughout the world, performed on the Ed Sullivan show and other naitonally televised programs, and has appeared on behalf of the U. S. Army recruiting and programming. They also appeared with Bob Hope at a New York "Lunch-o-ree" for the Boy Scouts of America, and recently gave a special concert at the White House for President and Mrs. Eisenhower. This special campus program has been arranged through the office of the Secretary, U. S. Army, U. S. Congressman Hale T. Boggs, Mayor deLesseps S. Morrison, and the Loyola Public Relations Department.
