The LOYOLA MAROON No. 25 Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Friday, May 23, 1958 Vol. XXXV Graduation Set Wednesday Morrison To Deliver Commencement Speech deLesseps S. Morrison, mayor of New Orleans, will deliver the principal address at commencement exercises Wednesday in the Fieldhouse. . , . , , More than 300 graduates from the university s six school? and colleges will be on hand for the ceremonies. Mayor Morrison will be awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Law by the Very Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S.J., Loyola president. The Most Rev. Joseph F. Rummel, archbishop of New Orleans, will preside over the ceremonies. Mayor Morrison, recently inaugurated to His fourth term as head of the city government, is a native of New Roads, La. He was graduated with honors from both the college of arts and sciences and the college of law at Louisiana State University. Morrison was first elected mayor of the city in 1946 and was reelected in 1950, 1954 and 1958. He has also served as president of the American and Inter-American Municipal Associations. In 1948 he was cited by the National Junior Chamber of Commerce as one of the nation's 10 outstanding young men. In 1953 Morrison was given the LaGuardia Award "in recognition of his continuous and successful efforts to provide efficient, responsible government for the City of New Orleans, in keeping with the philosophy of local administration which marked the labor and hopes of Fiorello H. LaGuardia." The mayor presently holds the rank of brigadier general in the Army Reserve and is president of the Reserve Officers Association. During World War 11, he served in England, France and Belgium and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. Commencement week will open Sunday with the annual Baccalaureate Mast at 10 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church. The Rt. Rev. Charles J. Plauche, chancellor of the archdiocese of New Orleans, will speak. Celebrant will be the Rev. Henry R. Montecino, S.J., university chaplain. A procession of faculty and graduates in full academic attire will form on the horseshoe and file into the church. MAYOR MORRISON Jerry Hoskins To Head Council Next Semester Next year's student council will be headed by Jerry Hoskins, president of A&S, who was elected at the initial meeting of the new council Monday. Hoskins will succeed Ed Pesce, outgoing president. per Schiro, representative from law school, vice president; Rosemary Hoppe, music president, secretary; Larry Henneberger, BA junior represetative, treasurer; and Tom McGoey, BA sophomore representative, parliamentarian. Ed Pesce, outgoing president, performed his last official duty on the council, closing the door on a brilliant three year tour of duty on the council, by swearing in the new members and conducting the presidential ballot. Pesce left the council with a few words of advice to the incoming student group. He said that the council should never let it be said that it is powerless because it is the only organization on the campus that has any official tie with JERRY HOSKINS Mass Opens Festivities On Sunday More than 300 Loyolans will receive degrees Wednesday in ceremonies beginning at 8 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. Commencement week activities, which precede graduation, begin tomorrow. Included are: HThe alumnae luncheon for women graduates at 12:15 p.m. in the Monteleone Hotel; Mass, 10 a.m., Sunday, Most Holy Name of Jesus Church; TJAlumni reception for all graduates, 5-7 p.m., Sunday, Fieldhouse;•{Commencement rehearsal for all graduates, 2 p.m., Tuesday, Fieldhouse. Plauche, the speaker Sunday, is moderator of the Catholic Evidence Guild of New Orleans and is active in Cana Conference work and the current archdiocesan Campaign of Progress. A native of Bordelonville, La., he was appointed chancellor in 1946, domestic prelate in 1949 and papal chamberlain in 1957. He studied at Collegia-Brignole- Sale-Negroni in Genoa, Italy; Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C; St. Joseph's Seminary in St. Benedict, La., and Notre Dame Seminary here. Houghton Receives Baltimore Award F. J. Houghton, dean of dental school, will receive the distinguished service award from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery of the University of Maryland on June 6, in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. J. Robinson, dean of the University of West Virginia, Dr. Harry B. McCarthy, dean of the University of Baylor, and Dr. Myron, dean of the college of dental surgery of the University of Maryland will also receive the award with Houghton. This award, being its first occurrence, will be presented to the deans at the University of Maryland's senior banquet, at the Lord Baltimore Hotel. Breaks Study Rules — She's A 3.0 Scholar By EVELYN KOMMA Logan Honor Student She is the fifth person in Loyola history to graduate with a 3.0 average. Who's going to argue with her? "I'm afraid I break all the' rules," the 22-year-old med tech laughed. "I honestly don't know how anybody can study every night. Frankly, I take lots of notes and study the night before." Named to Delta Epsilon Sigma, national Catholic honorary society this year, she is also a member of Tri Beta, national honorary biology society, the French Club, Lambda Sigma Lambda, and Our Lady of Fatima Sodality.
