The LOYOLA MAROON Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Friday, September IS, 1961 No. 1 Vol. XXXVIV the ... inside ... story ... By BERT EMKE Golden jubilee prompts series Freshmen had to put up with shaved heads, beltline beatings and a few other trifles at Loyola back in the old days. This is the Golden Jubilee year for Loyola, and so a little reminiscing: is in order and the treat or treatment for frosh is the first of a series in the Maroon called "Remember When." It is hoped that this group of articles will serve as a reminder of the heritage of Loyola and a sort of half humorous-half sentimental memory aid. The first of the series is found on ... page 5 it * it Fictional character inspires elegance Melville L. Rotch is the synthetic hero of a short, short, story in which the drab life of a "little" man is both elevated and caricatured by elegant language. Melville, although rather peu de chose, shows good taste that inspires admiration and an ability to get the most out of life. Lucien Salvant, in his first fiction, displays a zest for language and a flair for the unusual. This rare reading tidbit is found on ... page 4 it it it Frosh air opinions on Loyola qualities A new crop of freshmen is with us and the annual occupation of "getting acquainted"—they with Loyola and we with them—has begun. The two-year grant was given for the support of research in "Factors Affecting Egg Hatching, Development and Survival of Anostraca" to be directed by Dr. Walter G. Moore, professor of biology.Dr. Moore has done research for 17 years in branchipod anostraca, also known as "fairy shrimp." These strange creatures have the ability to produce eggs in ponds, ditches and other bodies of water which can survive for months, even years, in hot sands after water evaporation. Dr. Moore received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota and joined the Loyola faculty in 1940. He has been associated with the U. S. Forest Service, Minnesota Department of Conservation, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the National Audubon Society.LU committee improves campus parking facilities Registers 100% gain with new lot Recent developments by the university parking committee have resulted in expanded parking facilities on campus and a system of student vehicle registration to exclude non-student parking from designated university property. Parking area on campus was approximately doubled by creating a new lot on the block bordered by Calhoun and Loyola streets, Cromwell Place and Corpus Christi Lane. The half acre area will accommodate from 32 to 36 vehicles, doubling the facilities provided previously by the Horseshoe alone. (See map, page 3). Only those students who have registered their automobiles and purchased parking stickers will be permitted to park in the Horseshoe and the new lot, the parking committee said. Student parking regulations for the 1961-62 school year, as released by the committee, are: 1. Student cars may be registered in Marquette Hall near the Finance Office. 2. No student will be permitted to operate an automobile on campus without a permit decal, regardless of ownership. Students will be allowed to register only one car. Registration fee is 50 cents. 3. Students may park in the Horseshoe, except in the designated visitors' space, and in the new Loyola Street lot only. 4. Campus police will issue numbered violation notices for cars parked in any other place on campus, or without a permit. 5. Fines will be $5.00 for first offense, $10.00 for second offense, and $15.00 for the third offense. Loss of campus parking privilege will be the penalty for the fourth offense. 6. The violation notice will instruct the automobile operator to appear at the Parking Control Office in the Maintenance Department within 72 hours, exclusive of holidays, to pay the fine. After this period, a non-appearance follow-up will be sent to the Student Council Committee. This form will advise the violator that his case will be forwarded to the Faculty Disciplinary Committee within 48 hours if he has still not appeared. 7. Non-students found parking in university parking spaces will be "booted" and required to pay fines as outlined in regulation No. 5. Other developments in the park- Getting Acquainted FROSH TALK—Four new Loyolani get acquainted during a chat between freshmen assemblies during the orientation program last week.
