The LOYOLA MAROON Vol. XXXIV Loyola University, New Orleans, La., Friday, December 14, 1956 No. 11 SAK Wins Fight; Keeps Boatride Status SC Vote Sees Motion Fail Sigma Alpha Kappa, social fraternity, will maintain two boatrides each year as University functions as the result of a close 15-13 vote at the Tuesday night Student Council meeting. Fifteen voted against SAK's hoatride continuing as a University function and 13 for it. The motion failed because of the necessary two-third rule. During the three hour and 50 minute meeting the pros and cons of SAK's right to the University functions were bandied about before a crowd of approximately 86 spectators. A motion was made by Jerry Hoskins, A&S sophomore representative, that the preeeeding week's motion, "that the SAK boatride he stricken from the record as a University function and that the Pan-Hellenic Council be granted one annual boatride as a University function to be collaborated upon by the four social fraternities on the campus," be changed to read only that "the SAK boatride be stricken from the record as a University function." This motion was passed on the grounds that some of the council members were perhaps in favor of the first part of the motion and decidedly against the latter half. The use of the fund* derived from the SAK boatrides claimed the largest part of the discussion. George Frilot, former SAK president, described this questioned use of funds by stating, "that the funds were used for reasons best known to SAK and the Dean of Students, not to be made public." In defense of SAK's right to maintain their boatrides as University functions Frilot continued, "SAK has held successful boatrides since 1938, a spirit of competition among the fraternities is commendable, but the controversy in this matter is really inter-fraternity, and I think the council should recognize it as such." Former Dean of Students, the Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, S.J., was contacted by telephone during the meeting by his sucessor, the Rev. Robert L. Boggs, S.J., and Father O'Flynn stated that he had given his approval to the fraternity's use of the boatride funds to pay off a debt. Marcel Garsaud, former SAK president, finally offered the only reasonable explanation of how the funds were actually used. Garsaud explained that the fraternity had incurred two debts, one of a personal nature, namely to a local jeweler and the other was incurred through a service to the University, or presentation of the Loyola letters. He further pointed out that the latter debt demanded immediate payment so the fraternity let the personal one wait. Then with Father O'Flynn's approval they were permitted to allot their boatride proceeds to the paying off of the jeweler's debt. Before the final vote and the various questions and requests for explanation that ensued, Frilot stated his feelings on the question of granting the Pan-Hellenic Council the boatride. "Because we have put on a boatride since 1938 we are anxious to continue putting it on. This is our function, we started it and we want to keep it, if the Pan-Hellenic Council wants to sponsor a function we ask them to dig up one of their own," he said. The question was called at this point and at 8:47, after a preliminary vote for a secret ballot, the issue was voted upon by the Council.
