The Loyola Maroon No. 6 VOL. XXXIII Loyola University, New Orleans, la., Friday, November 4, 1955 17 Coeds Nominated For Campus Court Maroon Wins All-American A ward For Sixth Straight Time Stoma Pilots Cited Publication Honored For Spring Semester The Loyola Maroon was awarded the All-American rating for the sixth straight semester, according to an announcement this week by the Associated Collegiate Press. The award was received for the spring semester of last year. Editor of the award-winning semester was Shirley Stoma, presently a journalism senior who is now a full-time reporter on the New Orleans States' staff. The Maroon was rated superior in printing, the use of photos and editorial page features. Excellent ratings were received in news sources, balance of news, creativeness, style, leads (first paragraphs of stories), sports coverage and sports display, inside news page makeup, headline schedule and typography. The Maroon was particularly complimented on its editorial page columns and news features and for its outstanding use of photos. The Maroon received a total of 1695 points or 45 points higher than the Ail-American requirement of 1650 points. Only four papers in the enrollment of 2000-4000 in the nation received the honor award. Judge was G. D. Hiefield of the ACP which has its headquarters at the University of Minnesota. FOR HIS outstanding work in the field of dentistry, Dr. A. C. BROUSSARD, Loyola dentistry graduate and former faculty member, was honored by the Loyola Dental Alumni Association at a breakfast Tuesday. Tickets are now'on sale and can be purchased from any SAK member. Price of the tickets is $1.00 a person. The Boatride is a Universitywide function, Frilot added. Chem. Prof Given Grant For Research A grant of $2186 was awarded Dr. Winson R. de- Monsabert, associate professor of chemistry, by the Frederick Gardner Cottrell Research Corporation for further research on a zirconium project. Dr. deMonsabert's project, entitled "Magnetochemical Studies on Zirconium Complexes," will involve the magnetic susceptibility of the element zirconium in a solid state. §j Edward Boudreaux, chemistry senior, will assist Dr. deMonsabert in the research. Boudreaux has worked on the project with the doctor for the past two years and has constructed an electromagnet to further the study of the element zirconium in its various chemical forms. Another assistant, Claude Simon, also a chemistry senior, will join the pair in working on the project. Simon will work principally on the construction and design of special glass apparatus needed for the project. Dr. de Monsabert hopes the research will establish the validity of several proposed chemical formulae of the element and contribute to the knowledge of xirconium chemistry. The grant will provide for a new electromagnet to measure the magnetic susceptibility of the element and a magnetic balance. The Research Corporation requires periodic reports on the progress of the research. Prior to receiving the grant, Dr. de Monsabert published several articles pertaining to zirconium. These publications, together with the work of the doctor and Boudreaux in the past two years, enabled Loyola to receive the grant. Frat Accepts 5, Names Committee Five law students were admitted to the Farrar Senate of Delta Theta Phi, national law fraternity, Wednesday, Jack Pender, fraternity president, announced. Those" accepted are: Emile Buhler, Francis Weller, Louis Mailhes, and Fritz Westenberger, law sophomores, and Charles Cassidy, law freshman. At the same meeting, the fraternity appointed a constitutional committee to study discrepancies between the constitution of Loyola's Farrar Senate and the by-laws of the Supreme Senate, the governing body of the national fraternity.Appointed to the committee were Tom Dußos, Carl Vesy, and Frank Klein, law sophomores. ED Hosts Families At Annual Event The Little Woman—Kids—Mom and Dad—Brother and Sister—all took "part in the Evening Division's annual Family Night last week. Designed to afford students an opportunity to let their families sit in on classes, meet the profs, and get to know Loyola better, the entire night school family held open house. The Evening Division Student Committee planned the affair, acted as host and provided entertainment and baby-sitters for the small fry. After the class periods refreshments were served in the student lounge for night students and their guests. Ben Campbell of the evening division was chairman of Family Night. Annual BA Dance In Cafe Tonite The college of business administration will have its annual "Get Acquainted Dance," sponsored by the student organizations tonight at 7:45 in the Loyola cafeteria.Vidacovich Elected Frosh Council Prexy; Young, Castellanos, Cunton Also On Stuff Richard "Pinky" Vidacovich from the college of arts and sciences was elected president of the Freshman Council at a meeting Wednesday in Marquette Hall. Jerry Redmann, chairman of the freshman election committee, presided over the elections, assisted by Ted Tumminello, president of the college of business administration.Other freshman officers elected include Delosa Young, vice-president, and Fay Castellanos, secretary, both from A&S; and Ray Canton, treasurer, from the college of music. The officer* were elected by the 12 memberi of tbe Freshman Council, including four member* of each of the college* VIDACOVICH LIPPS CANTON Talent Niters, Queen And Court To Meet Participants in the annual Blue Key Talent Night competition, including the campus queen and her court, are requested to meet next Thursday, according to Dan Stapp, president of Blue Key. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Marquette Auditorium.Tulane Prof To Give Talk The Fine Arts Club will have as its guest speaker Sunday John W. Lawrence, design critic at Tulane. The group will meet at 7 Versailles Boulevard at 8 p.m. Lawrence holds degrees from both Tulane and Columbia Universities, is a winner of three progressive architecture honor awards, an American Institute of Architecture award in church architecture, and a second place winner in the Church Guild of America competition. He has also had articles published in numerous national publications, and recently lectured at the national convention of the AIA in New Orleans. Loyola Dental Alumni Honors Dr. Broussard Dr. A. Claude Brousaard, former Loyola school of dentistry faculty member, received a silver award from the Loyola Dental Alumni Association at their fifth annual breakfast Tuesday. The Very Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S.J., president of the University, made the presentation in recognition of Dr. Broussard's outstanding accomplishments in the dental profession. Dr. Broussard was recently elected president Speakers at the breakfast, held in conjunction with the New Orleans Dental Conference at the Blue Room of the Roosevelt Hotel, included Father Donnelly; the Rev. Edward A. Doyle, S.J., dean of faculties; Dr. Frank J. Houghton, dean of the school of dentistry; Dr. Wallace M. Nicaud, president of the dental alumni; and Philip Schoen, 111, president of the general alumni association. Father Doyle stressed the importance of alumni contributions to the endowment fund, noting the rapid growth of the University in its half-century of existence, the quality of instruction afforded by the University, and the expenses of maintaining a growing, modern university. "In 1904, Loyola College opened its doors to some four students, taught by nine faculty members on a payroll of leas than $10,000," he told the group, and "now, the University has 2,681 students, and a faculty payroll in excess of $700,000." He introduced new members of the dental faculty, and announced that the Davidson Dental Supply Company has donated to the school four new chair-units in memory of the wellknown regent of the school, the Rev. William D. o'- Leary, S.J., who died last February.Father Donnelly, in presenting the surprise award to Dr. Broussard, quickly ran through a long list of the honored guest's accomplishments ranging from foursport activity at New Iberia High School and his activities as a student and professor at Loyola to membership in a host of professional dental societies. Final Balloting To Run Next Mon., Tues., Wed. Students will elect the 1955-56 campus court Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Quadrangle, Jerry Redmann, election chairman, announced.The court will be chosen from the nominees elected Monday and Wednesday of this week. The queen and five maids will be elected from the 12 day school nomir nees, while the evening division will conduct a separate election to choose one maid from I the five nominees. Day school, nominees include: arts and sciences seniors Mary Blanchard, Catherine Cummings and Sylvia Klein; arts and sciences juniors Mary Aitken, Nancy Bat•tle, Marianne Hebert, Dale Hickey, June Smith, Shirley Trusty and Sue Wegmann; and music juniors Carol Cunningham and Theresa Kelly. Evening division nominees are Jeanne Escousse, Florence Fischer, Simone Laudumiey, Mary Louree and Elizabeth Riley. Harold M. Legendre is the evening division election committee representative. Redmann explained the day school voting rules as follows: 1. All day schools are eligible to vote; 2. Each person voting will be given a ballot on which the names of the 12 nominees will be listed in alphabetical order; 3. The person voting is to place the number one after his or her first choice, and continue until he has numbered six nominees in the order of his choice; 4. Number one after a name designates 10 points for the nominee, number two, nine points, and so on; 5. A ballot with more or less than six names numbered will be declared invalid; 6. The girl receiving the highest number of points, provided she is a junior or senior, will be named queen of the campus court; 7. The next five girls on the list will be named maids. Redmann emphasized that freshmen will be allowed to cast ballots in the election along with the upper-classmen. Progress Told By Fr. Doyle The Rev. Edward A. Doyle, S.J., Cardinal Key Alumnae moderator, outlined changes in the University's physical plant and progress made in the educational facilities at the alumnae luncheonmeeting Saturday. He reported that Mass was being offered daily for Loyola's interests in the TV channel controversy and requested the Alumnae's continued prayers in that regard. A program of events to come and a directory of the organization was distributed at the luncheon. Evangeline Molero, assistant to the dean of students, was luncheon chairman. Helen Cahill, president, presided at the meeting. A party for the women on the University staff in Cummings Hall, following the University's carol sing in December, will be the group's next activity. Co-chairmen of this event are Mrs. Tom Casey and Joan Barrios. M DR. BROWN APPOINTED Dr. Brendon F. Brown, professor of law, has been appointed a member of the Committee on Cooperation with the Inter-American Bar Association. The appointment was made by the Louisiana State Bar Association. The next annual Inter-American Bar Association convention will be held in Dallas on Nov. 16-21, 1956. Alumni Mass Opens 1955 Homecoming The 1955 Loyola Homecoming celebration commences Sunday, December 4, with the annual alumni Mass, Communion, and breakfast at 8 a.m. in the Holy Name of Jesus Church, Phillip Schoen 111, alumni president, announced. A cocktail party follows Sunday evening in the Fieldhouse. Next on the program is the alumni business luncheon and University President's report Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the St. Charles Hotel. Thursday, Dec. 8, will be the annual Blue Key Talent Night at the Municipal Auditorium. The clan of 1930 takes over the following Saturday, Dec. 10, with Mass, Communion, breakfast, and a cocktail party to celebrate the class* 25th anniversary.Climaxing the program are the annual Homecoming Ball in the Tulane Room of the Jung Hotel Saturday night, and the Homecoming game between Loyola and Miami University on Dec. 12. General Homecoming chairman is William Hogan. Other committee heads are: Dr. Raymond Bassich, breakfast arrangements; Lloyd Mistrot and the Hon. Marion Seeber, luncheon arrangements; Joseph Wegmann, assisted by Gerard Schuppert, cocktail party arrangements.Jim Manning, invitations; Ray Liuzza, publicity; Mark Malloy, 25th anniversary class day; Mrs. Joseph Jubin, decorations; Henry Asher, radio and TV programming; and Kent Lamarie, Homecoming. % Committee chairman for the Homecoming game is yet unannounced.WILLIAM HOGAN Future Frat Men Sign Up Today Acceptance of fraternity bids will close at 4 p.m. today.
