Dedicate New Gym La Salle's Explorers, 1954 NCAA cage champs and more recently selected in pre-season polls as the nation's top team for '55, meet the Loyola Wolves Sunday at 8:15 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. Fabulous Tom Gola, twice All-American center for the Explorers, leads the Philadelphia cagers in the Fieldhouse dedication game. The game will be the first mixed basketball game in New Orleans history since one of the stars of the LaSalle team is Alonzo Lewis, a 19-year-old Negro who is playing his first season for the Explorers. Coach Ken Loeffler, by his own admission, believes that his present squad is better than that team which won the NCAA title last spring at Kansas City. Naturally, all eyes will be focused on Gola—the cage phenom of this era. Gola has been enveloped in • uperlativei during the past three year* and according to Loyola'* Coach Jim McCafferty, "he deserves 'em." McCafferty, as usual, is pessimistic. "If I can hold those boys to a 35-point difference, I'll consider it a moral victory." Naturally, McCafferty doesn't mean what he says. He's going all out to win. However, McCafferty—the master of the defense—will have to dig a good one up to stop Gola and his associates. Last year "Big Jim" devised a startling defense which stopped LSU's All-American, Bob Pettit. Now with the changes of rules, McCafferty will have to be at his very best to stop Gola. "When you foul an opposing player, it's like giving them a field goal, what with this new free throw rule," McCafferty pointed out. Besides Gola and the Negro star Lewis, LaSalle is abounding in outstanding cagers. Take a look: There's Charles Singley, all- NCAA tournament last spring along with Gola. He averaged 10.7 points per game last year. There's Frank Blatcher, another torrid eager, who dumped in 10.4 points per contest last year. Too, there's giant John Yodsunkis, a young center who is 6 ft. 9 in. and spells Gola at the pivot. In all, LaSalle lost only one letterman from last year's championship club — Frank O'Hara. On the road to the NCAA title, LaSalle had a season's mark of 26 wins against only four losses. The overall record of Coach Ken Loeffler is 271 victories and 166 losses. McCafferty saw the Explorers in action in the NCAA tournament this ipring in Kansas City. He says this: "LaSalle has the greatest team I ever saw and Gola is the finest ball player I ever saw—nuff said!" The McCaffertymen will counter with a tall, rather experienced five against the Explorers. Barring any injuries in the SLI .game tonight, the following five will start: Eddie Galvin (6-5) and Mat Baer (6-5) at the forwards; Dick Vavrick (6-8) at the post; and Bobby Conrad (6-1) and Ronnie "Catfish" Reynoir (6-3) at the guards. McCafferty's sec on d-string might be Jim Stack (6-2V4) and Charley Gallmann (6-3) at the forwards; no listed center; and Bob O'Donnell (6-0) and Crit Lorio (6-0) at the guards. Tom Rouzan (6-3) may replace either Gallmann or Stack at the forwards and McCafferty may bring either Galvin or Vavrick at the post. Naturally, everything depends on LaSalle, Gola, "and the score. Wolves Meet Southwestern In Opener Tonite SLI Boasts Top Star In Ed McCauley Coach "Dutch" Reinhardt, the modest, unassuming mentor of Southwestern Institute's cagers, brings in his experienced Bulldogs for Loyola's opening game tonight at 8:15 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. While the Bulldogs appear to be a "breather" to most fane, "tain't so" and you can ask Loyola's Coach Jim McCafferty. Reinhardt's lads have a penchant for upsetting the Wolfpack. And if the Wolves are looking over SLI onto LaSalle on Sunday, the Lafayette larrupers may do just the trick. Last year the McCaffertymen, then actually the Tom Haggertymen, had to go all out to edge SLI, 66-61, in a torrid ball game. Of, course, the Wolveg walloped SLI in Lafayette. Coach Reinhardt is a mentor who does little talking. He sits in the background in his usual modest way and lets things come as they will. But he's got a habit of beating the Wolves. Overall, the SLI cagers hold a 17-16 series edge over the Loyolans and they would certainly like this one tonight. SLI did NOT lose a single man from last year's team. In fact, the Buldogs were bolstered by the return of Straus, a service returnee who hail* from Austin, Texas. He's 6-7 and will start at the pivot for SLI. Bucking up the Texan will be Ed McCauley, a shortie at 6-10, but a terrific out-shooter who averaged 17 points per game last year. Dallas Wolf, a 6-4 pivot last year, has been switched to forward and he's the lad who held a 13 per game average last year. Gilbert Dozier, a fiery forward, and Ben Boeech (from Chicago, no less) will be the other starter. Both are around 6-2. Lloyd Saucier, a good-looking kid from St. Aloysius High here, is one of the top subs for the Bulldogs and will be seen in action, fle is a southpaw and a difficult lad to guard. While SLJ held a rather unimposing record of 7 wins and 13 defeats last year, they are an improved club and one which can give the Wolfpack quite a bit of trouble. McCafferty's "big" problem right now is to get his Wolves mentally-fit for the Bulldog invasion. * He is trying to convince his cagere that SLI is far from any breather. In fact, he believes they will make things quite warm for his Wolves tonight. WJBW Broadcasts Wolfpack Games All Loyola Univenity basketball games will be broadcast ortr Radio Station WJBW, according to Louise C. Carlson, general manager of the local station. During the prerious jraars only home games of the Wolfpack were broadcast. Handling the mike duties will be Ted Andrews, the "old-redhead" who does the bulk of the 'casting in these parts. His sidekick, as usual, will be "Moon" Mullin. The Sugar Bowl tournament net only will be broadcast but will be telecast over WDSU-TV. The tournament will be held on December 29 and 30 in the Fieldhouse. 'Pups Open Against NOAC Tonight Coach "Boo" Jones debuts the Loyola Wolfpups tonight against the New Orleans Athletic Club in the preliminary tilt which begins at 6:15 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. Jones—w h i 1 e anticipating a rugged season—believes he has the "horses" to come through. The Wolf athletic department went ascouting last summer and came up with some nifty cage prospects, all of whom are now on Jones' Wolfpup team. Since Loyola follows the rules of the Southeastern Conference (which prohibits the use of a freshman) the yearling cagers will have to play with the 'Pups during this coming- year . Actually, the 'Pups are slated for a season of action since Jones has arranged a well-rounded schedule for his cagers. During the past few weeks the 'Pups scrimmaged the varsity cagers and naturally, are in tip-top shape. Jones plans to start a tall, if not-seasoned team against the NOAC cagers. Jim Hall (6-5) from Fort Wayne, Indiana and Pete Gaudin (6-5) from DeLaSalle of New Orleans will start at the forwards. Bill Schweiberger (6-9) from Tampa, Fla. will play center. The guards will be George Rinaldi (6-3) and "Boogie" Murret (6-1). Rinaldi is from New Mexico and Murret from New Orleans. Others slated for action against the NOAC's are Urbano Zea (6-2), Bernie "Bear" Brennan (6-6), Tony Cioffi (6-9), Henry Exsterstein (5-9), Dick Corrado (6-2), Billy Iglesias (6-1), Gene Didier (5-11), Marco Tuminello (5-10), Dimitri Filostrat (6-3) and Ray Doran (6-2). Jones has arranged an attractive schedule for the Wolfpups including games with the LSU Frosh team, Pearl River Junior College, and Keesler Field of Bilozi. Jones said that there will be no preliminary game prior to the Loyola LaSalle tilt on Sunday night. In addition, the 'Pups will compete in the Southern AAU league competition which will begin around the middle of January. Last year the 'Pups won the AAU league title and then copped the Southern AAU league championship in a tough tournament held at the Fortier gym. However, the Wolfpups will appear in the preliminary for the rest of the Loyola varsity contests. Other games slated during December (at home) include Algiers Navy, Pearl River Junior College, and Camp Leßoy Johnson.Jones does not hesitate to point out the fine talent which he has on this year's squad. Presently, the ex-Cathedral High coach has been working his lads in an effort to get them into a fin e 1 y-woven, integrated unit. "These kids were all good in high school—now they need to learn how to play together," he pointed i out. Wolves Meet Notre Dame In Tourney It's Loyola U. against Notre Dame and Bradley U. against Holly Cross in the opening night of the 1954 Sugar Bowl basketball tournament.Loyola and the Irish open the tournament which will be held on December 29 and 30 in the Pack Fieldhouse. Bradley and Holy Cross, defending champions, meet in the finale. The next night the two winners meet for the title with the two losers clashing for runnersup honors.Thu. the Wolves get a chance to avenge that 80-70 licking Notre Dame gave them In the opening round of the NCAA tournament last spring in Fort Wayne, Ind Notre Dame lost three of its five starters from that team while the Pack returns intact. Gone from the Irish squad are All-American Dick Rosenthal, a stout lad who scored 33 points against the Pack last year, Joe Bertrand, and Bill Sullivan. Returning lettermen include Jack Stephens, who averaged 16.8 points last season; John Fannon, who had a 8.9 average; and Bill Weiman, a lad with a 3.1 per game mark. Fannon is a rugged rebounder who made things tough for Loyola last March. Weiman saw little action. Holy Cross returns, perhaps, with a better team than that which won the Sugar Bowl and later the NIT in Madison Square Garden. The Crusaders lost Togo Palazzi, All-American. However, Coach Buster Sheary has Tom Heinsohn, a stylish 6-7 pivot who scored 444 points last year, among his returning lettermen. Bradley's Braves from Peoria, Illinois, lost four lettermen from last year's team which lost to La- Salle College in the finals of the NCAA tournament last spring. The Braves' outstanding returnees are John Kent who held a 13.0 average last season, and Dick Peterson and Harvey Babetch. The Braves have a new coach, Bob Vanatta, a mentor who has the amazing record of 165 victories against 39 losses. Tickets for the tournament are still available in the Fieldhouse ticket office. The Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, S.J., says that there will be no public ticket sale for Sugar Bowl tickets. La Salle-Pack Mixed Contest A little bit of history will happen Sunday night when Loyola hosts the La Salle Explorers in the dedication irame in the new Fieldhouse. The game will mark the first mixed college basketball game in New Orleans' history. Xavier and Keesler Field have already inaugurated mixed events, but not on the college level. One of the (tarter* on the La Salle five iD Alonzo Lewi*, a stylish 19-year-old Negro lad who is tabbed as a future All- American by observer* in Philadelphia.Lewis was the star of the Explorers' Frosh team last season when he averaged 21.6 points in 13 games. He'll start at guard against the Wolfpack. Other mixed basketball games this coming year will be the Loyola-Illinois game on December 22. The Illini has a huge Negro star on its traveling roster.
