The Loyola Maroon No. 22 Loyola University, New Orleans, La., May 8, 1953 Vol. XXX, X-259 Council Opponents Ready For Battle The battle lines are drawn for Charles "Dusty" Welsh and Ted Pfister, candidates for the A&S presidency of the Student Council. Elections will be held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the quadrangle. Pfister totaled 69 nomination ballots to Welsh's 55 in last week's voting, the only close race in any of the four colleges holding nominations. Pharmacy, law and business administration were almost solidly backing Ola Morgan, Moon Landrieau, and Ben Bridgeman, respectively. Dentistry elected Tom O'Flanagan two weeks ago while music school was scheduled to hold elections today. The Council will thus take in 17 new members and all new college presidents. Jim Quaid, BA junior and Betsie Prados, A&S junior, will remain on the Council under the "junior" rule. In A&S, Welsh's entire party of Skeets Tuohy, Barbara Jas, Shirley Stoma, Jerry Choppin, Bobbie Sanchez, and Tom Rayer was nominated. Maroon, Wolf To Sponsor Editor's Day The city's high schoolers return to the campus Saturday for the first annual Publications Day sponsored by The Maroon and Wolf. The periods will be broken by a lunch at noon and a dance at 3 p.m. The program opens at 9:30 a.m. with registration and opening addresses by the Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, S.J., dean of students, and the Rev. John A. Toomey, S.J., chairman of the journalism department.Alumnus Joe Famiglio will then explain printing processes to the entire group before it is split into yearbook and newspaper classes at 10:30 a.m. for three half-hour periods. The Maroon staffers, Leo Duffy, Jane Suhor and Pinky Vidacovich will lead panels on high school papers, organization and layout, respectively. Walter Shuster and other Wolf editors will speak on script, organization and layout at this time. After lunch, Wqlf editor Clyde St. Romain, The Maroon editor Gary Hymel, campus photographer Russ Cresson, and Bob Reso will conduct a panel on pictures at 1 p.m. A talk on business staffs will follow at 1:30 p.m. led by Evangeline Molero and Ben Bridgeman. To Use Voting Machines Voting machines will be used for the Student Council elections Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the quadrang'e according to Ralph Redmann, president. University Band Concert Set For Wednesday Nite Trumpeters Will Perform As Soloists A trumpet quartet will highlight the university Concert Band's annual spring concert Wednesday at 8:15 in McMain auditorium. Soloists for the evening will be William Scarlato, Paul Emenes, George Bischoff and James Boyd, trumpeters, who will perform the Eric Leidzen quartet. Directed by George A. Jansen, the 55 piece group will also give the first New Orleans performance of a march by Edward Levine, composer of band music and former student of the college of music. The complete program will include a Chorale Prelude by Bach; overture to Russian and Ludmilla, Glinka; Minor Moods, Edward Levine; Folk Song Suite, Vaughn-Williams; Gloria, Loiey; The Trumpeter*, Leidzen: Lady of Spain, Evan*; Selection* from South Pacific, Roger*; and the Liberty Bell by Souta. Director George Jansen is a graduate of the Julliard Institute of Music, New York and is at present a member of the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the Summer Pops Orchestra, and plays first trumpet with the New Orleans Opera. He conducted a brass choir concert at Loyola recently which received top acclaim from critics. The students will be featured in a trumpet quartet at McMain mditorium Wednesday. Prospective Editors Continue Trial Issue Joy Lar.dry and Jane Suhor, A&S juniors, are co-editing this week's Maroon at applicants for editorship of the 1953-54 Maroon.Two trial issue* were undertaken in order to determine next year's editors. Last week Leo Duffy and Pinky Vidacovich, also A&S juniors, served as trial editors. Red Cross Bloodmobile Here Today Students were expected to set a campus blood drive record today as the Red Cross opened donor facilities in the ROTC building for the third drive here. In the last collection, 68 pints of blood were collected from Loyolans but early today upwards of 400 pledge cards had been collected. So great was the response that the Red Cross had to close their downtown office in order to supply adequate personnel and equipment for'today's drive. Forty-two persons can be handled every ten minutes. The ROTC has volunteered lOO'i of its enrollment and almost 100 more pledges have been made by other students. Loyola's quota is set at 100 pints. This is part of the 32,000 pint minimum requested of New Orleans by the national Red Cross. The blood will be given without charge to hospitals served by New Orleans Regional Center, for the Armed Services, for stockpiling of plasma for Civil" Defense and for gamma globulin to fight polio in epidemic areas. Mrs. Barre Chosen Philaristai President Mrs. E. Otto Barre was re-elected president of the Philaristai, Loyola's mothers' club. Other officers are Mrs. Henry Ha r t in a n, vice-president; Mrs. James McNamara, treasurer; Mrs. M. A. Holahan, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Ernest Jacques, recording secretary; and Mrs. Sidney Bridgeman, registrar. Hanford Named President Of BAE Betty Hanford, BA junior, was elected president of BAE sorority Tuesday at the monthly meeting of the club. She will succeed Marcel Monie. Other officers are Millie Makofsky, A&S senior, vice-president; Beth Ann Rebaudo, A&S junior, secretary, and Marilyn Shambra, BA junior, treasurer. The new officers will be installed at a luncheon the first week of June at one of the member's home. 'Boomerang' Next Movie "Boomerang" will be shown Sunday night at 8 p.m. in Marquette auditorium. Dana Andrews and Jane Wyatt have tbe leading roles in the Student Council,! fifth movie of the year. Sunday it May 10 and Mother'* Day. Bring your mother along. Admission is only 25 cants par coupl*.
