The Loyola Maroon Vol. XXX, X-259 Loyola University, New Orleans, La., April 24, 1953 No. 20 Work Starts Monday On New Field House Pat O'Brien Talks Thursday By LEO DUFFY Pat O'Brien, famed actor of stage, screen, TV and radio will be the next speaker on the Loyola Forum in the Grand Ball Room of the Roosevelt hotel, Thursday, April 30 at 8:30 p.m., the Rev. John A. Toomey, S.J., forum director, announced. "Life in Hollywood" will be the subject and O'Brien is, according to Fr. Toomey, one of the finest examples of the Catholic actor in the movie capital. A native of Milwaukee and a graduate of Marquette university, he originally intended to become a lawyer but decided instead to enter show business after playing in "Charley's Aunt" which was produced by the drama society at Marquette. Achieving little «ucce»» on Broadway O'Brien and hi* school mate Spencer Tracy both entered the Sargent School of dramatic art where William Powell, Edward G. Robinson and numerous other famous stars had received their dramatic education. The two soon-tobe-famous stars lived on a pooled allowance of $60 a month. While he was appearing in a road company run of "Broadway" O'Brien met the talented Eloise Taylor who was later to become Mrs. O'Brien. He appeared on Broadway in "A Man's Man" in "Coquette" with Helen Hayes and got his boost to Hollywood in "The Front Page." "The Front Page" was O'Brien's first picture in which he played the part of a newspaper editor. Later he played the title role in "The Life of Knute Rockne" and is renowned for his renditions of the priest in such pictures as "The Fighting 69th" where he played the role of the heroic World War I chaplain, Father Duffy, in "Angels With Dirty Faces" costarring with James Cagney and in "The Fighting Father Dunne" where O'Brien played the title role and figured largely in PAT O'BRIEN "12 O'Clock High" Next Movie "Twelve O'Clock High," starring Gregory Peck, will be shown Sunday night at 8 p.m. in Marquette auditorium. This is the third movie to be presented by the Student Council. If attendance doesn't increase at the next four campus movies they will be discontinued. Ranch house attendance has been good, but all-around university support has been lacking. Ultra-Modern Plant Ready In Three Months with the oft-postponed, ultra-modern field house to be erected as soon as the area is cleared. The long awaited announcement came early this week from the Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, S.J., athletic director. Later he told The Maroon: "The contract has not been signed yet because a number of details have to be ironed out, but final approval (has been (riven bv Jesuit authori-1 111* VI J w ******* v Contractors for the modern plant will be Hogan Brothers and architect is E. B. Ludwig. The contractors will begin their construction around the middle of May, and work will be completed by September 30 in time for the 1953-54 basketball season.Plans call for a floor 75 feet wide and 152 ft. 4 in. long. The basketball court itself will be 90 feet, the maximum allowed by the NCAA. It will be set 35 feet from Freret Street. The "dream" of sports fans in the city, the new field house will be an all purpose building with an elevated floor and slightly inclined seating rows. The structure will be used for graduation, convocations, lectures, plays, and intramurals as well as basketball. An ROTC rifle range and music practice rooms will be installed under the seats. Gen. Maglin To Review ROTC Unit Major-General William H. Maglin, the newly appointed Provost-Marshall General of the Army, will review the Annual Award and Field Day exercises Tuesday at 3 p.m. ' General Maglin will be guest of honor at a dinner given by the Very Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S.J., following the ceremonies. Nine decorations will be presented on Award Day along with keys for the rifle competition and the list of the Distinguished Military students for the past year announced. Father Donnelly will present the President's Award to the best drilled cadet selected by competitive drill during the same ceremonies.General Maglin will present the Provost Marshall General's Trophy to Cadet Colonel Clarence Favret, and Colonel Harris W. Pearson will present the Reserve Officers Association Medal to Cadet Major Gerard J. Mialaret. Other Cadets to be decorated are: Sgts. Bernard Bridgeman and Maurice Landrieu, Cadets James P. Same Old Stoty: 'Age Dims Glory' It wa. 1922 when Loyola dedicated it* "pride and joy", a brand new gym on Freret St. Now 31 years later, a dilapadated, rotting old structure iD being removed from the same spot where Loyolans once beamed with satisfaction. The wooden structure has not been used for varsity games the past three years as the seating capacity is but 730. But Loyola is pushing ahead and the old gym will have to be left in the wake of progress. It was nice knowing you, ole gym. (See FORUM, page 2)
