The Loyola Maroon Vol. XXX, X-259 Loyola Univeraity, New Orleans, La., March 13, 1953 No. 17 General Campus Retreat Begins Wednesday Odessa Els ton Elected 'Little Colonel' of Campus ROTC Six Coeds To Sponsor Corps Units Odessa Elston has been elected the first annual "Little Colonel" of the campus ROTC corps. In elections held Tuesday Miss Elston was named sponsor of the regiment, the first here. She is an education sophomore from Buras and attended Louisiana State before entering Loyola. Batallion sponsors named are: Mary Jane Williams, first batallion and Joan Gravois, second batallion.Four company sponnors were elected. They are Jane Trepagnier, Jalna Moak, Evangeline Molero and Patsy Stephens of companies A, B, C, and D, respectively.One hundred and twenty-two students, exclusive of freshmen, voted in the election with Company D, the honor company for the past two weeks, having the highest number of votes. The girls will be presented at regular drill Tuesday and will review the regiment. Capt. John Tynan was in charge of the election which lasted two weeks. Cadets were asked to submit their nominees' pictures and only Loyola coeds were eligible. The sponsors will participate in all the social functions sponsored by the ROTC. This is the first time that coeds have participated as sponsors in the history of R.O.T.C. on the campus. Misses Elston, Williams, Molero and Stephens were also member! of this year's campus court. ODESSA ELSTON All Classes Cancelled A general retreat will be conducted on the campus Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Class will be cancelled on those days. The retreat will be held for those who have not as yet made* a retreat, according to the Rev. S. H. Ray, S.J., student counsellor. Retreat master will be the Rev. Harold A. Gaudin, S.J., president of Jesuit High of Shreveport. All spiritual exercises will he held in Holy Name church and free time will be spent in reflection and spiritual reading in the lounge and on the campus. The order of the retreat is as follows: 8:00 a.m.—Mass, Morning Prayers. 8:45 a.m.—Breakfast 9:15 a.m.—Meditation 10:15 a.m.—Spiritual Reading 11:00 a.m.—Meditation 11:45 a.m.—Free Time 12:00 noon—Exam of Conscience12:15 p.m.—Noon, Lunch, Spiritual Reading 1:00 p.m.—Rosary and Way of Cross 2:00 p.m.—Meditation 3:00 p.m.—Spiritual Reading 3:30 p.m.—Meditation 4:15 p.m.—Benediction Students are reminded of the policy of the university. All Catholic students must make a retreat, either campus or closed. Non- Catholics arc not obligated to make a retreat but'are invited and urged to dCD so. Due to the retreat there will be a change in the mid-semester exam schedule. The schedule is posted on the arts and sciences bulletin board and can be found elsewhere in this issue of The Maroon. President's Message I would like to take this occasion of the General Retreat for the Loyola students to remind you of the policy adopted by the university authorities of making an annual retreat obligatory on all Catholic students. While the non-Catholic students are not obliged to attend, they are most welcome at any and all of the exercises. I wish a blessing on the retreat and an abundance of graces for the students as a reward for their hearty cooperation. W. Patrick Donnelly, S.J. President Spring—When A Young Man Thinks Of: Kelly Replaces Celantano In Passion Play Lead George Kelly will portray Pilate, replacing Richard Celatano originally chosen for the part, in the forthcoming Passion Play by Leo Zinser. This will be Kelly's last Thespian appearance. Zinser gets his first chance to direct the presentation, having been forced to give up the duty last year due to illness, and Kelly, who substituted for him, gets his first opportunity to star in the annual Passion production. The complete and final cast has been revealed. It includes: Anna Copponex as Proela, Richard Celentano and Richard Smith as hi«h priests, Ted Pfister as Glaueua, Melvin Graziano as a Roman inspector, Claude Riche as Joseph of Arimathea, Janice Hogan as Mary, and Claire Favrot as Magdalene. Servants are Joan Gravois, Shirley Stoma and Pat Farley. Sonny Trepagnier is a Centurion. Leo Zinser and Tootsie Williams will be teen as the old man and the child in the prologue and epilogue. Lee Freland and Ken Offan will handle staging and lighting. The play will remain essentially tiio same, with the exception of additional dialogue. TAKING TIME OUT to enjoy the spring weather that made an early visit are, left, BETTY NAJOLIA and JOHN PEYTAVIN taking advantage of the outdoor facilities in the park. At right, GERRY WAGENER, co-captain of the baseball team, swings for a homer in America's favorite sport, a sure sign of coming spring. ROTC Camp June 20-Aug. 1 ROTC summer camp will be held from June 20 to Aug 1 at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Well over a hundred advanced cadets from Loyola will attend the sixweek Military Police course. Lt. Col. Luther C. Barthe, commander of the Loyola detachment will be weapons instructor at the camp. David Bulloph To Lead Chorus The oppointment of David L. Bullolph, New Orleans Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra tympanist, as director of the newlyorganized Loyola university chorus, was announced by dean Ernest E. Schuyten, chorus moderator. Other appointments included Sister Madeline Marie, 5.8.5., chorus president; Lorraine Newsham, music freshman, vice-president; Claude Boudreaux, music junior, secretary, and Anna Copponex, music junior, treasurer. An invitation has been extended to all students, faculty and staff to join the chorus which will meet Tuesdays from 2 to 3, and Fridays from 12 to 1 p.m. Father Doyle La. College's President The Rev. Edward A. Doyle, S.J., dean of faculties, was named president of the Louisiana College Conference at the group's 15th annual convention in Natchitoches Saturday. Other officers from Loyola are Miss Isabel Snyder, chairman of the Spanish section of foreign languages division, and the Rev. Joseph H. Fichter, S.J., vice-chairman of the social sciences division. Father Doyle will head 18 Catholic and secular colleges and universities which composes the organization. These include Loyola and Tulane universities, Newcomb, Ursuline, and Dominican colleges, and Notre Dame seminary, and 12 other colleges and universities throughout the state. On his being elected to the confcionce, Father Doyle said that "the General Education Board report for the past year notes with satisfaction the increasing stamina and solidity of education in the south and suggests the challenge that Southern institutions of higher learning should be on their way to being 'not just good' but "better than all the other colleges of the country.' " Born in Columbia, S. C, Father Doyle received his Ph.D. from Catholic university in Washnigton, D. C, and his BA from Georgetown university, in Washington, D. C. He received his Licentiate in Sacred Theology from St. Mary's, Kansas in 1947, and was ordained to the priesthood in the Society of Jesus in 1946, after which he offered his first solemn Mass in St. Peter's church. FR. DOYLE Pilate TV-ed "Pilate" will be televised over WDSU-TV noon, Good Friday, April 3, Leo Zinser, director, has announced. The play will not be presented in Marquette auditorium this year. This move was made in cooperation with the CYO Passion Play running at the Municipal Auditorium, March 15-29.
