The Loyola Maroon VOL. XXX, X-259 Loyola University, New Orleans, October 3, 1952 No. 1 482 Freshmen Increase University Enrollment Registration In Dentistry Sets Record With 482 freshmen registered for the fall semester, the University's total student body increased to 2,164, according to Miss Carmel V. Discon, registrar. This year's freshmen registration is greater than last fall's. Dentistry's freshmen class Is filled to capacity with 52 students and the over-all enrollment in that school is its largest in history, 201. However, the total registration from all colleges and divisions in the University indicates a decrease from that of 1951. The breakdown in Arts and Sciences classes are: freshmen, 248; sophomores, 83; juniors, 119; seniors, 121. "The nmall number of A&S lophomorei," Father Doyle explained, "ia probably duo to the fact when they entered they were caught in our new acceleration program " Saturday classes, transfers and graduate students bring Arts and Sciences total up to 750. Business Administration's freshmen class numbers 95, while the sum for that college is 225. Pharmacy, which was not on acceleration, has 61 freshmen and 82 upperclassmen. Ten frosh enrolled in Music School bringing its total to 50. The small entering class of 20 in Law School brought sum enrollment down to 102. "In computing the final number of students for the entire university," the Dean of Faculties concluded, "we included the 530 registrants from the Evening Division and the 163 in Industrial Relations." Staff Shifts Announced By Fr. Doyle Faculty changes for the University were announced by the Rev. Edward A. Doyle, S.J., dean of faculties. The Rev. Bernard A. Tonnar, S.J., professor of mathematics, assumed his duties as assistant dean of arts and sciences, succeeding Mr. Stephen Vasquez who had served as acting assistant dean. Father Tonnar will also retain his teaching position this semester. Returning from a leave of absence, the Rev. Martin P. Burke, S.J., assumed his former office as chairman of the philosophy department.Other A&S appointments are Rev. Louis J. Hiegel, S.J., assistant professor of theology and canon law; the Rev. Henry Montecino, S.J., assistant professor of philosophy; the Rev. John H. Mullahy, S.J., assistant professor of botany and zoology; Miss Mary Louise Suhor, journalism lecturer; Mr. Edwin P. Fricke, journalism instructor and moderator of The Maroon; Mr. Allen McDonald, assistant professor of physics; and Mr. Tullio Pignoni, math lecturer. In the ROTC, Lt. Col. Luther R. Barth has taken over as new ROTC Commandant and professor of military science and tactics, succeeding Col. Chas. A. Post. One other appointment in School of Law is that of Mr. De- Van Daggett, professor of obligations and corporations. * ♦ Tuition-Loans Now Open To Students Students may now apply for tuition-loans to the Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, S.J., dean of students. Those desiring financial aid should file their applications one month before the semester in which the loan will be used. Incoming freshmen may borrow enough to pay for a complete semester. However, only half a semester's tuition will be granted to upperclassmen, Father O'Flynn said. Twelve students may receive work scholarships at Hotel Dieu this semester he also announced. "These scholarships are open to all students who would be willing to work in surgery, labs, or in the wards of the hospital when their schedule permits," the dean of students said. Fr. Donnelly To Speak The Very. Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S.J., president, will be one of the principal speakers today at 10 a.m. at the Southern Regional Conference of tsursing in Hotel Dieu. Council Nomination Monday; Frosh Vote Froth have been given the privilege of voting in Student Council election*. Nomination* will be held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The election* will be held on the same day* the following week. All the schools will vote during the hour of 12 to 1 except the Art* and Science which will have their election from 11 to 2. Each college will elect a president and the following representatives: A&S, one junior and four sophomores; BA, on* junior and two sophomores; Pharmacy, one junior and two sophomore*; Muaic, one sophomore; Dental, one sophomore. First Kangeroo Kourt Convenes At Noon Today Kangeroo Kourt will be held today at noon in the Quadrangle. This year the court will be held on the theme of the motion picture hit, "Quo Vadis." With Melvin Graziano portraying Nero, and Ted Pfister as his aide Petronious. George Kelly will portray Tigerius. When Nero has one of his tantrums he will be appeased by such things as a gladitorial match between two freshmen or the singing of the "Fight Song" by three or four Frosh standing on their heads, while upperclassmen pour ice water down their legs. For the female Frosh the task of pushing large amounts of balloons through boxes is awarded by the gracious emperor. The loser of this lace will receive a pie in her face or perhaps an egg shampoo. These are just a few of the skits lined up for this afternoon. Don't miss the fun, be there! Twenty-Four Receive Diplomas At Law Graduation Tomorrow Deans Award Merited By Bill Redmann Bachelor of Law degrees will be conferred on twentyfour candidates from the Law School at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Quadrangle. The Very Rev. Maurice Shean CO., chairman of the Catholic Committee of the South, will be the guestspeaker.Bill Redmann will receive the Faculty Award for having the highest grades in the senior class. Students will proceed from the law school in cap and gown accompanied by the faculty to the Quadrangle. In case of rain, graduation will be held in Marquette auditorium. Dean Antonio Papale will confer the degrees. The Rev. Patrick Donnelly, S.J., Loyola President and the Rer. Edward A. Doyle, S.J., Dean of Faculties will also attend the exercises. * Redmann has already secured a Bechelor of Science degree from Loyola and a Master of Arts from Notre Dame. He is one of four brothers presently attending Loyola. He taught Logic for the past two semesters and was among BILL REDMANN Freshman Dance A "Welcome Freshman" dance will be presented by the school of dentistry for its new students tomorrow from nine until one at the Arrow Room on the Jefferson highway. Hymel President Of Service Frat Gene Hymel, business administration senior, was elected president of Alpha Pi Omicron at the last meeting of the Summer Semester, succeeding Larry Derbes. Other officers are: vice-president, Larry Roy, BA junior; secretary, Patrick Breeden, BA junior, and treasurer, Henry Trochesset, A&S senior. *• Alumnae To Install Margaret Finley, new Alumnae president, will be installed at the first meeting of the year on Tuesday.The University library is in line for a donation of money collected from the members of the Alumnae.Holy Ghost Mass Tuesday; Class Hours Changed The annual Mass of the Holy Ghost to invoke the blessing of God on the coming school year will be celebrated Tuesday at 8 a.m. in Holy Name Church. The Very Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S.J., president, will deliver the sermon. Those who must attend are: Catholic seniors and freshmen from the colleges of law, arts and sciences, pharmacy, music and business administration and Catholic freshmen and sophomores of dental school. Dental school senior and juniors and juniors of the other colleges of the University and all non-Catholic students are invited but not obliged to be there. Ranks will form in the quadrangle at 7:30 a.m. and the procession will begin at 7:45 a.m. Deans and Jesuit members of the faculty will meet in the President's office at 7:30 while other faculty members will group in the Main Conference Room of Marquette Hall at the same time. Lay faculty members and seniors are requested to wear cap and gown. The Jesuit faculty will attire in cassocks and surplices. In the college of arts and sciences classes will begin at 10:10. The 8:10 and 9:10 periods will be cancelled. Students from other colleges will receive notice about their classes from their respective deans. (See LAW, page 5) +4
