The Loyola Maroon VOL. XXIX, X-258 Loyola Unirariitj, Now Orleans, May 0, 1952 No. 22 Loyola Quits GSC; Athletic Committee Resumed Expanding Athletic Program Prompts More—Fr. O'Flynn by Newell Schindler Loyola resigned from the Gulf States Conference, Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, S. J., moderator, announced Wednesday. Fr. O'Flynn also announced that the Loyola Athletic Advisory Board has been reorganized. The official resignation was announced in a letter to Reed Green, Conference president. Green, athletic director at Mississippi Southern, announced at the same time that Southern had also resigned. "This action is taken because of our expanding athletic program," Father O'Flynn said, "and Loyola hope* to be in another conference in the near future." Mississippi Southern also indicated hopes of joining another conference, but neither school commented further. The Athletic Advisory Board is composed of Fr. O'Flynn, and five local leaders. They are Clem Dufau, vice-chairman of the University's Field House committee; Percy Sitges, president of the Louisiana Bank; Robert Elliot, president of the International House and also of the New Orleans Petroleum Company; Bernard J. Grenrood, vice-president of the Mid-Winter Sports Association; and Dr. Edward Levy, Jr., Loyola dentistry graduate, and president of the New Orleans Forward Club. Sitges is the only member of the old Board which last met in 1939. The group held its first meeting Tuesday nigtht. Their function will be as advisors to Fr. O'Flynn, but they will not have any authority, nor determine athletic policy. The purpose is to help further the athletic program. J.; standing: Percy Stiges, Bernard Grenrood and Robert Elliot. 121 Are Scheduled To Graduate May 31 One hundred and twenty-one candidates from the various Schools and Colleges of the University, are scheduled to graduate May 31, at 10:30 a.m., in the Loyola Quadrangle, according to the Rev. Edward A. Doyle, S. J., dean of faculties. Speaker for the occasion is Brother Martin, S. C., provincial of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. He is widely known in the city from his previous assignments as principal of St. Aloysius, and his principalship at Catholic High in Baton Rouge. The Alumni Graduate Man will be held Sunday, May 18, at 8 a.m. in Holy Name Church. The Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S. J., president, will be celebrant, and the Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, S. J., deal on students, will deliver the sermon, Fr. Doyle said. The celebrant for the Baccalaureate Mass has not been announced as yet, but the Sacrifice will take place Sunday May 25, at 10:00 a.m. "Because of the small graduating class and the humid temperature, it was decided to hold the graduation outdoors," Fr. Doyle said, "If inclement weather is in the offing, the commencement exercizes will be held in Holy Name Auditorium." Phi Beta Has Annual Recital Loyola's Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Fraternity, national honorary music and speech organization, will present its annual Spring Recital Saturday, May 10, at 8:15 p.m. in Marquette Hall auditorium., Miss Myrtle Marcotte, president of the Chapter, stated that ithe recital is an annual affair ,and that it is one of the group's Jargest projects of the year. The general public is invited. Phi Beta's national president, Mrs. Edna Johnson, of Winter Park, Florida, will be honored guest of the recital. The program includes the following:"La Comparsa" by Lecuona, and "Sevilla" by Albeniz, played by Mrs. Elena deGuevarra. Miss Bessie Caruso will sing "Lisette," by Wekerlin; "Alleluja," by Mozart, and "Les Filles de Cadis," by Delibres; a dramatic reading of Anderson's "Mary of Scotland" will be given by Shirley Harrison and Anna Copponex. Miss Lorraine Peyregne will Schumann's "Marienwurmchen," "Den Gartner," by Wolf; ."Clair de Lune" by Szule, and "Ecstasy" by Rummel, and Mary Jane Schiro will play "Come Sweet Death," by Bach, and Rachmoninoff's "Prelude in C Sharp Minor." Laura Named Prexy Of SBA Exec. Council Joe Laura has been elected president of the Executive Council of the Student Bar Association. Serving with him will be Joe Barrecca, vice-president, and Barron Bourg, secretary-treasurer. The organization, will also sponsor the next Loyola forum. Ask More Help In Blood Drive, Set For Thursday Talks by Korean veterans will open the second Red Cross blood drive at Loyola, Thursday, May 15, sponsored by the Student Council, it was announced by A. J. Capritto, chairman of the committee."The last drive netted only 46 pints from 3,000 students," Capritto said, "which isn't even considered a good half-day's work." The unit which will be on the campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. has outlined a simple procedure for donating blood, Capritto continued.Those students who have given blood on the previous visit are now eligible to give again. If the donor is under 21 he or she must obtain a release from parents. "As far as the actual process is concerned, it is painless and requires only about a half hour including time for filling out a preliminary form," Capritto said. If a student is late for class, he will be excused, according to the Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, S.J., dean of students. All organization presidents as well as officers of the various colleges will have complete information.Loyola President Speaks At Tulane On Founder's Day The Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S.J., University president, will render the invocation and benediction at Tulane Founder's Day ceremonies Monday at 10 a.m., at the university. Monday at 8:00 p.m., Fr. Donnelly will speak at the awarding of the Regina Matrum Medal to Mrs. Joseph A. Vath, by the Catholic School Co-operative Clubs at the St. Charles Hotel. Mrs. Vath, besides being mother ,of 12 children, grandmother of 35, and great grandmother of three, is active in church and civic work in Mater Dolorosa parish.Philaristai Plans 'Mother's Day' Party The Loyola Philaristai will have a Mother's Day program on Tuesday, May 13, 2-4 p.m. in the Student Lounge. Mrs. James K. McNamara, hospitality chairman, is in charge. Students Vote Wednesday In Campus Presidential Poll "Voting" for President of the United States will be held all day Wednesday in the Quadrangle. All full-time students are eligible to vote in the poll sponsored by the Maroon and NFCCS and are reminded that it will be held only for one day. A voting machine will be used to tabulate the bal- lots. The election climaxes two weeks of politijal activity in which Dem- and Mr. George Reese, who spoke for Sen. Robert A. Russell and Mr. Henry Roberts, organizer of the local "Kefauver for President" group. "The poll is being conducted to ocratic and Republicans had opportunity to inform voters. Tuesday and Wednesday rallies were held on the Library steps. Speakers for the GOP were Mr. James McKillips, director of the "Americans for Eisenhower" club, in our country today," Rene Pastorek, co-chairman of the project, said.
