XXIX, X-258 Loyola Usinriitjr, Now Orleans, May 2, 1952 No. 21 Students Have Chante To Vote for President Rallies Start Tuesday In Quadrangle Every Loyola student will get a chance to vote for the next President of the United States. An election sponsored by the Maroon and the National Federation of Catholic College Students will be held on the campus May 21, and all full time students are eligible to vote. The Rev. W. Patrick Donnelly, S. J., president, has approved the project. Kick-off political rallies will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at 12:20 pm. on the Library steps in the Quadrangle with representatives from Democratic and Republican parties as speakers. Tuesday, two Republicans will speak. John Minor Wisdom, president of "Americans For Eisenhower" in the city, will talk for General Dwight D. Eisenhower and as yet un-announced backer will elaborate on Senator Robert A. Taft's policies. Democratic advocates will hold the platform Wednesday. Speakers are: Henry Roberts, president of the local "Kefauver For President" club, for Senator Estes Kefauver and an unnamed backer for Senator Richard Russell. Each will talk for 15 minutes and will answer questions from the audience if time permits. The following week student po- Miss Isabel Snyder Edits Manuscript Of Spanish Writer "El monje bianco by Eduardo Marquina," is the title of book edited by Miss Isabel Snyder, associate professor of Spanish at Loyola, which was published and put on sale this week by the Newco Printing and Sales Company of New Orleans. The book contains photographs from the private files of the poet, drawings by Miss Snyder to illustrate the scenes, notes on the play and its analysis, a Spanish-English vocabulary, and the most complete biography and bibliography yet published on Marquina. The first-hand information was gained when Miss Snyder, who was the only American professor to have so far gone to interview the Marquina family, lived with the poet's family in their summer home in Cadaques in the Pyrenees near the Mediterranean Sea. Miss Snyder, who received a joint Loyola-Carnegie Grant in 1949 to carry out her research program, had excess to the files of the poet in his Madrid study. This biography of Eduardo Marquina is based mainly on a study of documents, correspondence, manuscripts, personals, family and professional photographs, newspaper and review articles kept in the private files of Marquina's Madrid study, a section of which is now in microfilm, original, or duplicate form in the files of the editor. "It would not have been possible for me to know and to have lived with the Marquinas, studying with them the works of don Eduardo, without being impressed with their air of'sincere idealism which has won my sympathy and admiration towards them and the poet," Miss Snyder said. The text, copies of which are in the Loyola Library, is suitable for the upper Spanish courses and invaluable for research.Miss Snyder was recently elected vice-president of the Phi Kappa Chapter of the Phi Sigma lota Romance Language Society. MISS ISABEL SNYDER Peyregne Has Senior Recital Lorraine Peyregne, voice student of Miss Elisabeth Wood Loyola College of Music, will present her senior recital Monday at 8:30 p.m. in Marquette Auditorium. Miss Peyregne, a lyric soprano, will sing selections from Rosa, Haydn, Mozart, Schumann, Wolf, Brahms, Chausson, Szulc, Hahn, Charpentier, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Zeckwer, Carpenter and Rummel. Miss Lorraine Shane, will be piano accompanist. The recital is opened to the public. A&S College Pre-Registers On May 12-19 Pre-registration this year is set for May 12 through the 19, for the College of Arts and Sciences, the Rev. Edward A. Doyle, S. J., dean of faculties, announced. This summer session is needed for students to even off their courses in preparation for the beginnings of the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior semesters in the fall term. Pre-registration is a boon to botn faculty and students as it eliminates late registration rush, Father Doyle said. Fourteen semester hours are the maximum that a student in Arts and Sciences can take, the dean concluded. Melvin Ardoin New DSD Prexy Melvin Ardoin was elected president of Delta Sigma Delta, professional dental fraternity, at their recent meeting. Other officers elected are: vice-president, Thomas O'Flannagan; secretary, James Buatt; and Treasurer, Charles Sentell. The fraternity's informal initiation was held April 25 at "Twin Oaks" picnic grounds on the Lakefront. Formal initiation was held April 26. The annual senior banquet is set for Friday, May 2, at which time the new officers will be installed. U.S. Price Chief Feted At Luncheon Mr. Jesse M. Cutts, Chief of the Industrial Prices Branch of the United States Bureau of Statistics, was feted at a luncheon at Loyola Monday by Mr. A. I. Warrington, associate professor of economics in the College of Business Administration. Other members of the Loyola faculty present were: Mr. H. J. Engler, Mr. A. I. Boudreaux, Mr. Peter Tullier, all of Loyola, and Mr. John Finnegan of Tulane University. Mr. Cutts was in New Orleans to address the American Statistical Association. Mental Illness, Topic Of Theta Beta Address Mr. John P. Dood, chairman of public relations at DePaul Sanitorium, will lecture on "Some Facts of Mental Illness; Wednesday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Bobet Hall, room 304. The lecture will be sponsored by Theta Beta, National Honorary Biology Society. Refreshments will be served. The public is invited to attend according to Miss D'Antoni, president of Theta Beta. High School Seniors View Loyola Campus Seniors from high schools throughout the city are visiting the various departments and colleges of Loyola today, High School Day. A program designed to familiarize high school seniors with the customs and courses offered at Loyola opened this evening with an address in Marquette Hall auditorium by the Rev. Edward A. Doyle, S.J., dean of faculties. The Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, dean of students; Tom Haggerty, head basketball coach, and Paul F. Steen, director of public relations, also spoke. The students are being conducted on a tour of the campus by Student Council guides. The college of Pharmacy has exhibits, and the ROTC has a weapons display for the students' inspection. Other schools and colleges have charts displayed as to different facets of university life. A special dance for the visitors will be held this evening in Holy Name of Jesus school, sponsored by Loyola's four social fraternities: Alpha Delta Seventeen Cadets Formally Initiated Into Provost Corps Seventeen ROTC cadets were formally initiated into the Provost Corps, honorary Military Police organization, Thursday at the Loyola unit's annual Spring Formal at Camp Leroy Johnson. Carr, Professor of Accounting in the College of Business Administration has returned from Dallas, Texas where he addressed the Accounting Section of the Southwestern Social Science Association. The subject of his talk was "Avoid Peculation—Don't Encourage It." SODALITIES, ROTC SPONSOR FIELD MASS IN QUADRANGLE CA Military Field Mass was held Thursday morning in the Quadrangle honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Rev. Edward A. Doyle, S.J., dean of faculties, was celebrant. Crowning of the patron saint of the United States took place before the sacrifice, with Blanid Suflivan, Arts and Sciences senior, performing the coronation. Maids were Ida Chirieleison, and Gladys Aleman, of Little Flower Sodality; Janet Wooten; Madeline Pere, and Margaret Witte, of Our Lady of Fatima Sodality; and Eleanor McCloskey, of the St. John Berchman Sodality. Escorts were members of the ROTC Honor Guard. The Cadet band played three hymns, and alio featured a trumpet trio. A squad composed of ROTC cadets fired a volley at the Consecration. "The Mass celebrated outdoors is an impressive ceremony," The Rev. Sam Hill Ray, S.J., sodality director, said, "and the music and firing squad added its solemnity." WHO WAS MISS CEYLON? Formal Inspection Of Campus ROTC Scheduled May 5-6 The annual formal inspection of the Loyola University ROTC unit will be held on Monday, May sth, and Tuesday, May 6th, it was announced Wednesday by Lt. Colonel Charles A. Post, commander of the ROTC unit at Loyola.The inspecting party will consist of Col. Sol Bloodworth, Executive Officer to the Chief of the Louisiana Military District, Lt. Col. Benjamin Falzgraf, and W.O. J.G. William G. Padmore.A review of the' ROTC classes and an inspection of the housekeeping duties of the unit, such as the suppy room will take up the first day's work.
