XXIX, X-258 Loyola University, New Orleans, Friday, January 18, 1952 No. 13 Twenty Students Elected To Student Council '52 Group Has Sixteen New Faces Student Council elections for 1952 have been announced by Ed Tanner, chairman of the S.C. Election Committee. Twenty students were elected to fill the posts for two semesters. Three of these were chosen for the second consecutive year. They are Douglas Clause, Law president; Ralph Redmann, BA junior representative; and Marilyn Tassin, Music junior representative. Charles Dugas and Winkie Fox are the only two automatic holdovers from this year's council. Election for the Council officers will take place at the first meeting of next semester. Only members participate in this vote. The new Council follows: Arts and Sciences. President Louis Dudoussat; Junior Verna Satterlee, and Sophomores Pinky Vidacovich, Bill Mallette, Pat Mc- Carthy, and Angela Brady. Law School. President Douglas Clause, Junior Ken Watkins, Sophomores Joseph Mouton and Claude Riche. Business Administration. President A. J. Capritto, Junior Ralph Redmann, and Sophomores Ben Bridgeman and James Quaid. Music. President Louis Escobedo, Junior Marilyn Tassin and Sophomore Claude Boudreaux. Mild upsets were registered in the Law and Pharmacy races. Clause edged Rene Pastorek and Bill Redmann by a slim margin while the pharmacists chose Hambacher over Lee Mehrhoff, in what was expected to be a tight contest. In A&S and BA, elections ran true to form. Nominations favored Dudoussat and Capritto and the final balloting affirmed the preliminary vote. ./ ~  Catholic U. Drama Group to Perform Tulane Campus Player's Incorporated will present "Twelfth Night" and "School for Wives" at Dixon Hall, Tulane University, Jan. 25 and 26. This group is composed of graduates of the school of drama and speech of Catholic University of America. They have been on the road with these two plays since October and have played in Cincinnati, St. Louis, Washington, Baltimore, St. Paul, Minnenapolis, Kansas City, Chicago, Notre Dame, and many other cities. In New Orleans they are being sponsored by the Metropolitan Council of Catholic Women, who have asked Thespians to publicize the plays on the campus. The players are directed by Walter Kerr, author of the Broadway hit "Touch and Glow", and all have appeared at one time or another on Broadway. The two plays received many excellent reviews in their circuit of the country.Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night", a romantic comedy of mistaken identity and misplaced love, is familiar to Loyola students since the recent Thespian version. "School for Wives" by Moliere, a comedy of psychological action, tells the story of a young girl who marries an old man and her struggle to gain the upperhand in their marriage. Tickets are $1.50 for each performance and will be on sale at Werleins beginning January 15. German Club Sets Talk On Wagner The German Club will sponsor a lecture on the life and music of Richard Wagner to be given by Mr. James Steckel, A&S '51 graduate, on Thursday, January 17 at 7:30 in Marquette Auditorium.The lecture will be combined with some "f Wagner*! music on records. * Officers recently elected to lead the club for the coming year were Elwood Gonzales, president; Robert Stearns, secretary; and Frank Butel, treasurer. Easy-Does-It Attitude Wins Annual Frosh Moot Court for Arata, Schott by Cloe Huth Glib retorts, sharp sharking and an easy-does-it attitude brought victory to two future "Bar-tenders." Last Friday in the Moot Court Finals, Blake Arata and Pat Schott, counsel for the defendent, held their own against Charlie Kronlage and Pascal Calogero, legal advisers for the plaintiff. The case involved the rights of a party injured by a damaged bus shelter, when it collapsed after being hit in an accident. Arata prepared the briefs and Schott, the rebuttals. Fast talk is not a new line for Pat though. At Jesuit High he was a member of the Varsity Debating team and while passing through Loyola he's been president of the Edward Douglas White Debating Society as well as a member for the past four years. But Blake claims that up to now such things have been out of his line. He's an old track vet from Jesuit and has been a steady runner here since his freshman year. And as of 1949 the cinderman is also a letterman. Pat entered Loyola in 1947; Blake in 1948. The former enrolled in Arts and Sciences, receiving his AB in History last June. The latter is now working on a combined degree in BBA and Law. It's an old saying around the campus that "law is a jealous mistress."mistress." Law students alledgedly study from three to five hours per night. "That sure is true," says Pat. "Since I've been over here I've been forced to quit most of the organizations I used to belong to and my social life has been cut to a minimum. With working twenty-five hours a week on the side, the goings kinda rough, huh, Blake?" "It's not one of those sure thing courses," Arata added. "The amount of time it takes to keep up necessitated my giving up track. The atmosphere is more conductive to study than BA was. People here are more energetic and interesting, probably because they're older." Blake holds the highest average in freshman law class for the past semester. As the winners of the annual Moot Court, they will receive gold keys from the St. Thomas More Law Club on Award Night. Doyle One hundred-forty seven candidates are scheduled to graduate at Eleanor McMain Auditorium on Saturday, February 2 at 3:00 p.m., the Reverend Edward A. Doyle, S. J., Dean of Faculties, announced. Principal speaker for the occasion will be Hon. John J. Hearne, Ireland's ambassador to the United States. The final week of activity begins on Saturday, January 26, when the Board of Directors meet to pass on the candidates. Following this, at 11:00 a.m.. Father Doyle, Dean of Faculties, will meet with all candidates in Marquette Auditorium. On Sunday, January 27th the Seniors will attend a Baccalaureate Mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Holy Name of Jesus Church. The Most Reverend Wendelin J. Nold President Announces Carnival Holidays Monday, February 25 and Tuesday, February 26 (Mardi Gras) will be university-wide holidays, according to a special announcement yesterday by the Very Rev. Thomas J. Shields, S. J., Loyola President. February 11 Is Retreat Deadline Men students who have failed to sign up for retreats were urged to do so hefore February 11. If they fail to do so they will be placed in a retreat, according to the Rev. Harold Cooper, S. J., retreat director. The closed retreat at Manresa which was to be held January 31 through February 3 has been cancelled, he said. Students signed up for this retreat may make arrangements with Fr. Cooper for a new time. The only remaining Manresa retreat will be held March 13-16. One hundred and thirty-five students have signed up for this retreat, he said. *+  Med Techs Choose Laurie Coco Leader Laurie Coco was elected president of the Med Tech club. Other officers elected were Mary Rose D'Antoni, vice-president; Fran Coleman, secretary; Carolyn Kessels, treasurer; Evelyn Izumi, historian and Ronald Styron, sergeant-at-arms. The Med Tech banquet was held at Arnaud's Restaurant Monday night and the group's annual formal will be held tonight at 9 p.m. at the Arrow Room. NFCCS To Meet At Grand Coteau A meeting of the National Federation of Catholic College Students will take place February 3, at Grand Coteau, Louisiana, according to Norris Fitzmorris, senior delegate. Members from Loyola attending will be: Ida Chirieleison, newly elected junior delegate; Cloe Huth, Overseas Service Program chairman; Senior delegate Fitzmorris; and members Ed Kammerer, Bill Mallette, and Harry Lamy. Ursuline and Dominican colleges, and Xavier University, will each have six delegates attending the meet, Fitzmorris said. "Transportation to Grand Coteau will be made in the Loyola bus", he added. The council meeting will discuss future action of the NFCCS, and elections of officers for the next semester. (Continued on page 3) N.B.
