The Loyola Maroon VOL. XXIX, X-258 Loyola University, New Orleans, Friday, December 7, 1951 No. 10 Pack Bids For 'Bigtime' Tonight Against Dayton Captain Loyola's Wolfpack cagers will play their first "bigtime competition tonight in a drive for recognition in the college basketball world when they meet the powerful Dayton university Fliers. The game will be held at Tulane gym, with tap-off set for 9 p.m. And the competition boasts a National ranking of 11th., an All- American person of towering Don Meineke, and a starting team average of a little better than six feet, five inches. Last year the Fliers were finalists in the NCAA tournament. Coach Haggerty's hopefuls will be seeking their seventh victory of the season. So far the Wolves have defeated the Keesler Field Fliers twice, 83-66, and 71-65; downed the Alumni 70-32; beat Pensacola Navy 87-47; rolled over Algiers Navy, 100-34; and pasted Corpus Christi (NAS) 82-38. In the preliminary contest Coach Jim McCafferty's Wolfpups will play their second game of the season against the Alexandria Air Bate quint, recent conqueror* of S. L. I. The Wolfpack will probably start with the same five as used in previous games. They are Gus Reynoir (6-5) and Bob Hanberg (6-3) at the forwards, Tom Ketchum (6-7) at the pivot, and Captain "Money" Cabal lero (5-10), and Bob Conrad (6-1) at the guard positions. Others slated for action include Eddie Galvin (6-5) pivot, Mat Baer (6-5) guard, Jim Stack (6-2) guard, Ralph Barnett (5-10) guard, and John Hultberg (6-3) forward. They have all shown up well in early season performances. Baer, Stack and Galvin are freshmen. Starting forwards Gus Reynoir and Bob Hanberg, besides Coach Money Caballero Tom Haggerty William Tell Has Nothing On Hymel Roland Hymel and Henry Burch will give an archery exhibition during the half-time intermission of tonight's game. Highlight of the entertainment will be Hymel's attempt to shoot an apple off the head of a student! He will perform the "William Tell" feat from a distance of 25 yards. Pops Soloist Tregle Is Talent Night Guest Bman Tregle, will be guest artist at the 14th Annual ; Night next Friday, it was announced today by lan Newell Schindler. fie, known for his appearences for the Summer New Orleans Opera Association, and a three week affiliation with the Original Amateur Hour, has a daily radio program on WWL, "The Voice in the Night." "Vision Fugitive", and "Shadraek" are the two numbers that Tregle will sing. Other guests include 1948 winner Harry Theard, last year's winner Marcianna Urresti, and the faculty skit. Ten skits, 12 individuals, and three groups are entered in competition for berths in the show. From these, seven skits, ten individuals, and five groups will be picked. Organizations with skits entered are, the Med Tech Club, Beggars, PKE, the Physics Club, the Business Administration coeds, Ydemocs, the St. Thomas Aquinas Sodality, ADG, and the Kelly Troupe. Individuals entered are: Mary Margaret Romig, Rosemary Rotolo, Lorraine Peyregne, Don Bernard, Claude Boudreaux, Saul Schnieder, Diana Gisclair, Bessy Caruso, Mary Jane Schiro, Richard Smith, Irlee LeClere, Marlene Duronslo, and Humberto Valladares, last year's runner-up. Lambda Mu Delta, Claude Riche and Richard Smith, and Gilbert Satterlee and Beth Ann Ribaudo are entered in the group competition. Tickets are on sale in the Book Store and the Public Relations department or may be obtained from any Blue Key member. President Harold Lamy will act as master of ceremonies. Prizes will be awarded the winners in each division, Schindler stated, and according to the practice of past years, prominent local authorities and critics will act as judges. Traditionally, the judges names are kept secret until their decisions have been announced following the show. Former Talent Night winners and guest stars, to be named at a later date, again will be featured in this year's production. Norman Tregle Inter-Organizational Group Discusses Future Structure The regular semester meeting of the Inter-Organizational Council of all student organizations on the campus was held yesterday with the future structure of the organization discussed in view of new powers now held by the Student Council, the Rev. Anthony O'Flynn, S. J., Dean of Men, said today. Presiding officer was Harold Lamy, Law School senior and president of Blue Key honor fraternity. Miss Flora Jean Grau, A&S sophomore and president of Le Cercle Francais, was recording secretary. Information as to the future structure of the Inter-Organizational Council was not available today, but a slight change was predicted because of the present function of the Student Council in relationship to other student organizations o the campus. The purpose of the Inter-Organizational Council, Fr. O'Flynn explained, is to furnish a means of expression for student organizations regarding school activities and to act as a liaison betwee the organizations and the Student Council. Fr. O'Flynn discussed the purpose and activities of campus organizations, and Louis LaCour, president of the Student Council, spoke about the Student Council and its relationship to the Inter- Organizational Council. Athletic Director Jack Orsley spoke about sports activities including the Dayton-Loyola basketball game, and Lamy gave a report on the coming Blue Key Talent Night show. 160 Needy Families Given Thanksgiving Food By Sodalities One hundred and sixty Thanksgiving baskets were distributed this year by the Loyola sodalities, according to the Rev. Samuel H. Ray, S. J., moderator. The sodalities will hold their annual Christmas party at Madonna Manor, Marrero, at 11 a.m. Sunday, December 16, when toys will be distributed to the orphans. "The magazine and clothes drives are progressing magnificently and the toy drive is winding up with an abundance of toys," Fr. Ray said. An annual Triduum of Communion by the sodalities began Thursday and will end tomorrow with Mass at 7:30 in the Thomas chapel. NEXT ON FORUM ROBERT A. VOGELER, the American businessman released recently after serving seventeen months in a Red Hungarian prison, will speak before the Loyola Forum, December 16, on "Seventeen Months of Despair." Dean Of Men Gives Retreat At Shreveport The Rev. Anthony C. O'Flynn, S. J., Dean of Men, gave a retreat last week to the seventh, eighth and ninth grades at St. John's High School at Shreveport, Louisiana.On his return he attended a Gulf States Conference meeting with coaches Jack Orsley and Jim McCafferty, as representatives from Loyola. Veterans Allowed Course Changes Recent changes in the ruling that a veteran could not change his course of study after July 25, 1951 have been announced by the New Orleans regional office of the Veterans Administration, according to Miss Dorothy Thompson, Loyola veterans counsellor.Exceptions to that ruling are that the veteran's reason for change must be for those circumstances over which he has no control, or for those reasons acceptable to the Veteran's Administration, she said. Individual cases to which these exceptions apply will be given special attention by the Advisement and Guidance department. "However," Miss Thompson added, "veterans should first notify the contact office before going to Advisement and Guidance.."Tapping Ceremonies Held By Rho Chi Tapping ceremonies for Rho Chi, honorary pharmaceutical fraternity, took place at a recent meeting of the American Phamaceutical Association, Edward Tanner, APhA president, announced today. Mrs. O. A. Ernest, president of the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Louisiana State Pharmaceutical Association, addressed the group. Election of officers is slated for the next meeting, December 19, Tanner said. Pharmaceutical Frat Admits Four Pledges — - —-/— Four new members were admitted into Rho Chi, honorary scholastic pharmaceutical fraternity, at the initiation banquet yesterday at La Louisiane Restaurant, according to Victor J. Bradbury, president. They are A. J. Breaux, Howard Bolton, June Conravey, and Curtis Prejean. Basics To Serve Three Extra Years, According To Order 8 Years Reserve Loyola Reserve Officer Training Corps graduates will serve eight years instead of five in the reserves according to Lt. Col. Charles A. Post, commanding officer of the Military Police unit. The change, announced by the Universal Military Training and Service Committee, does not include cadets now in the advanced courses or basic cadets who have had previous military training, Col. Post said. All cadets who do not have military experience have a choice of either signing the new deferment plan or being discharged from the ROTC unit, he added. The Loyola ROTC batallion will be present in full uniform for the Loyola-Dayton basketball game in the Tulane Gymnasium and will furnish ushers. The unit's band and color guard will open the game's activities. Sunday an eight man firing squad led by batallion commander cadet Lt. Col. Maurice Riley will participate in the Banks Social Club memorial Day at ?:30 p.m., on the intersection of Tulane and Jefferson Davis Avenues.Cadets George Bischoff, Ronald Styron, and Paul Emenes will play bugle selections at the memorial dedication, Col. Post said. N.B. There's an awful lot of student mail piling up in the new Postal Unit. A mailing list is no longer posted on the bulletin board of the Dean of Men—so, it's up to you to drop into the Unit and ask if they have mail for you.
