The Maroon A Loyola Tradition Since 1923 • "For a greater Loyola" V 01.90, No. 15 uhgh www.LoyolaMaroon.com Workers prep for Buddig upgrades By AAREN GORDON Staff Writer Preparations and exploratory work are under way to prepare Buddig Hall for the renovations that will start this summer. Director of Residential Life Craig Beebe said conducting the preparatory and exploratory phases now would allow for the first major phase of renovations to take place during the summer. Buddig will be open this fall to welcome students for the 2012-2013 school year. Final renovations on Buddig will occur next summer. Beebe said crews are currently preparing the outside of Buddig for removal of its bricks. They have also installed a vapor barrier to block water vapor. In test rooms and mechanical rooms, they have installed new windows to test wind resistance. As a result of this preliminary work, changes, such as the temporary sidewalk in front of Buddig, have been implemented. In addition, Loyola University Police Department Capt. Roger Pinac said LUPD is trying to keep traffic flow on North Road to one direction because of the "safety buffer" that is being used while the exterior bricks are removed. Though the university shuttle has been re-routed, it will still travel the same stops. Pinac said preliminary work has not caused any traffic disturbances, other than occasional "slow ups." To ease any potential vehicular traffic jams, Pinac said officers patrol traffic at peak times, such as 5 p.m. Though Beebe said he does not expect this work to affect student services, he said occasional noise will affect students in Buddig, as crews are scheduled to work during daylight hours. Like LUPD officers, students are finding the temporary adjustments nearly seamless. As a resident of Buddig, psychology sophomore Maddy Fox sees the preliminary work as positive partially because the noise, has made it more likely for her to go to the library to do school work. "Overall I think Loyola has done an effective job of keeping any disruption to a minimum," Fox said. Aaren Gordon can be reached at algordon@loyno.edu. SAFETY FIRST Tin "II s Xo/1 'no/r' t » it/m s/rii v'.s for salt'/// t/rom/d ca/i/p/is By JENNIE GUTIERREZ Monroe Library elects Olson as new dean By JUDTIH CORRO Staff Writer Monroe Library has found a new dean after a year and a half of searching. University President the Rev. Kevin Wildes, SJ., said he was glad to announce Michael P. Olson, associate university librarian for information commons at University of North Carolina, as the new dean of libraries at the Jan. 20 Presidents Convocation. Edward Kvet, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, said he believes Olson is perfect for the position. "I am pleased that Michael and his family will be joining the Loyola community at an exciting time in our history as Loyola begins its second century," Kvet said. "His background as a scholar and administrator will enhance the stature of our award-winning Monroe Library." Olson's predecessor, Mary Lee Sweat, retired in August 2010 after 40 years of service. Since then, the university has been searching for a replacement. Laurie Phillips, associate dean of Technical Services and a member of the search committee, said a lack of protocols made it difficult to find a new dean. "Because Ms. Sweat had been dean for so long we had no protocols for hiring a new one, so we had to figure out how we wouldproceed," Phillips said. The other associate dean, Deborah Poole, served as interim dean. James Hobbs, online services coordinator, said the university stopped searching for a new dean toward the end of the spring 2011. "We stopped for several reasons, and I won't say exactly what happened, but we decided to change strategies," he said. "In September of last year we started again, and we had two candidates interviewed in December, one of them being already chosen by the provost and see DEAN, page 7 tyt CC in !
