The Maroon A Loyola Tradition Since 1923 "For a greater Loyola" jkj;lkj www.LoyolaMaroon.com Friday, November 4, 201 1 WHAT'S MY AGE AGAIN? Verifying ages becomes essential as NOPD cracks down on underage drinking By KRISTINE LUPOFF Contributing Writer According to the New Orleans Police Departments Records and Identification division, NOP!) received a grant in early May from the Ixmisiana Highway Safety Commission, which funds a program called the Juvenile Underage Drinking Enforcement. According to city officials, the program is focusing on the Uptown and university area and the French Quarter. From May to September, 1,077 minor in possession citations have been given out in the New Orleans area. In May, the number of citations issued was 80. By August, that number rose to 418. Plainclothes NOPD officers go to bars and Rfuxles Murphy was at a convenience store with a friend who was purchasing alcohol when an undercover officer stop|X'Cl to ID him. Murphy, English junior, has received two minor in possession citations in the past two years. He said he believes students have to be more careful. "I'm not worried when I go out, but I'm mindful of my surroundings," Murphy said. Police can issue minor in possession citations to any person under 21 found with alcohol. The citation can lead to fines, community service and in some cases, jail time. Students fall victim to fraud By LUCY DIECKHAUS Contributing Writer Interested in a student job, $700 per week, with flexible work hours? If this email looks familiar, it's more than likely an attempt at fraud. Students have been contacted by a group claiming to be giving out jobs that pay students for their opinions. The emails are sent from Chelsea Baker, Brenda Walker and other aliases. They describe the need for the jobs and say, "Believe it or not, your opinion is worth a paycheck." The emails vary in the amount of money offered, but have one thing in common: fraud. Loyola University Police Department sent out a campus-wide email advising students to be aware of a business' legitimacy, especially those online, and asked students to recognize that companies do not hand out money. Roger Pinac, LUPD captain, said to use common sense and look carefully into anything that asks for personal information or money. Pinac also said the key to identifying the legitimacy of an email is to "verify, verify, verify and to make sure that you always know who you are talking to." Bret Jacobs, vice provost of Information Technology agrees on that note to verify. "Legitimate sites will never ask you to verify personal information such as your account password," he said. Jacobs also said that recognizing the email sender is always important in identifying scammers. According to Pinac, the only thing new about Sunday Cooks return competition money By JAMIE FUTRAL Assistant News Editor The Sunday Cooks gave back the $5,000 they won from a sustainability competition last spring after student organizations and the university disagreed with their use of the competition money. The organization won the Green for Green Sustainability Initiative competition held by the Loyola Association of Students for Sustainability last April. The competition required students to create a project making Loyola more sustainable. The Sunday Cooks, a group of Loyola students who provide culinary services, took the win with their Olympic Waste Management Corporation project that proposed a composting plan for Loyola and Tulane. However, they did not use the money directly for composting. Instead, the Sunday Cooks used the $5,000 for a pasta-making machine and packing supplies in hopes to gain revenue toward the composting project, according to Christoph Dornemann, a member of the Sunday Cooks who participated in the competition and see FRAUD, page 4 see UNDERAGE, page 7 see MONEY, page 7 @Loyno Check out what students are saying in 140 characters or less #Life&Times #Pages RELIGION PG.
