THE MAROON A LOYOLA TRADITION SINCE 1923 • " FOR A GREATER LOYOLA" Vol. 88, NO. 10 ONLINE EDITION AT LOYOLAMAROON.COM FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2010 Loyola seeks to settle final tenure suit By JEAN-PAUL ARGUELLO Contributing Writer Blue final professor to settle suit The last of eight termination suits levied against Loyola University in Hurricane Katrina's wake is reaching a settlement just a week shy of going to trial after three years of litigation. Mary Blue, a former broadcast communication professor with tenure, filed suit with the university along with seven other tenured professors after their employment contracts were terminated in 2007. All but Blue's case have since settled, with most of the settlements' terms sealed. Four other tenured professors were terminated but did not file lawsuits. Blue's case was set for trial Nov. 8. According to Douglas Moore, one of Loyola University's attorneys, the court was notified on October 29 that both parties had entered negotiations for a settlement. "It's a matter of Community reacts to rape story By ERIN CLEMENTS Contributing Writer Rape probably isn't the usual lunchtime conversation topic. It probably isn't the usual gossip among friends nor is it probably part of the daily morning exchange between professors. But for the past two weeks, rape has been the talk of the town in the Loyola community. After the "Student arrested on rape chaise," article printed Oct. 29 in The Maroon, a campus-wide conversation about the issues of rape ensued, taking place largely on The Maroon's online comment board. Issues included who is to blame, where responsibilities lie, and what actions should be taken? One online comment, posted on Oct. 29, read, "I bet u [sic] she wanted it. Chix [sic] always pull that bs [sic]. Maybe she wants attention?" Another online commenter said, "It was completely the victim's fault for being raped, not the rapist's! She shouldn't have been drunk if she didn't Sustainability improves to B- By CARL HARRISON The Maroon Loyola received a B- on the Sustainable Endowment Institutes 2011 green report card improving its grade from a C- last year. The report card is designed to provide straightforward information so that schools may learn from each other's experiences, thereby fostering more effective sustainability policies. The report reviews 52 indicators, from green building initiatives to recycling programs to endowment investment policies, and uses an A to F letter-grading system to evaluate performance. In the 2010 report, Loyola earned a C- overall and F's in three categories - green building, endowment transparency and shareholder agreement. In this year's report Loyola received no F's and raised it's F in green building four letter grades to an A. Endowment transparency and shareholder agreement rose one letter grade to a D. Ed Kvet, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, said that Loyola's efforts in seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certifications on our capital projects helped improve our overall rankings. "The great per se from where we were last year is the important part. We made substantial progress." Kvet said. "We foresee that we will continue to make progress every year as a number of things happen. The first of our capital projects, the Thomas Hall renovations, is going to be a LEED certified building. The president has made very clear that we want all of our projects to be LEED certified." Loyola boosted its grade from a C to an A in the administration category for buying Energy Star appliances and Photo illustration by Elle Maloney and Craig Malveaux Last year Loyola received a C- in sustainability. Thanks to new plan implementation Loyola is up to a Bthis year. As effoits construction continues Loyola aims to become more environmentally friendly. see COURT, page 5 see GREEN, page 4 see RAPE, page 5 I SEE PAGE 9 FOR A TASTE OF NEW- ORLEANS MAROON DIRECTORY: CRIME WATCH, page 2 | EDITORIAL, page 14 | LIFE & TIMES, page 6 | SPORTS, page 10 | NEWS TIPS: 865 3535
