The Maroon A LOYOLA TRADITION SINCE 1923 • "FOR A GREATER LOYOLA" Vol. 88, NO. 3 ONLINE EDITION AT LOYOI.AMAROON.COM FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2010 Freshmen adjust to additional roommates By SAM WINSTROM Assistant News Editor Biever Hall triples up quad -side rooms It takes two to tango, but three can get a little awkward. With the largest incoming class since pre-Katrina, Residential life has brought back the triple-occupancy room to Biever Hall. Erik Kjosness, area director of Biever Hall said that the rooms have been designed for three residents for 10 years. "It goes back to 1999 when they renovated the quad side of the building, specifically to accommodate three people," he said. To accommodate the rising enrollment, Biever triples were given a new loft-style bed that is high enough for students to place their desk underneath. "When they tripled them before they bunked two beds and put another bed in," Kjosness said. "But with these lofts they can put a desk and a dresser underneath and it saves a lot of space in the room compared to what they were doing pre- Katrina." ELLE MALONEY/ Photo Editor Lonterio DeVaull, general studies business freshman, sets up his room in Biever Hall. Biever Hall quad-side rooms have added an extra bed, dresser and closet to accomodate a third person living there. Illegal parking diminished number of available spots in campus parking garages By YVONNE CAPPELVICKERYGrace period shortened to alleviate problem Assistant News Editor Finding parking the first week of school was more difficult than usual. The construction on the West Road garage has resulted in the loss of 180 parking spaces, said Paul Flemming, assistant vice president for the administration department: Physical Plant. Traditionally Loyola gives a grace period the first week of school for students to buy their parking permits. This year that grace period was shortened and students still had trouble finding parking. "I got to campus 30 minutes before class to look for parking. I was 45 minutes late for my first class, because I ended up having to park off campus, even though I have a parking permit. My class was dismissed early, so I missed my first class," said Benjamin Staab, psychology junior. "I'm sure some students parked in the garage without permits," said Robert Reed, assistant vice president for Student Affairs. "Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. are the hard times to find parking," Reed said. "Maybe this is because everyone is getting here at the same time, or the classes are compressed." Reed said they do not feel they have oversold parking permits. West Road garage construction has diminished faculty parking at Tulane, so there are 13 spots reserved in the West Road garage for them. ELLE MALONEY/ Photo Editor Finding parking on campus is getting somewhat easier thanks to Loyola officers checking for tags and enforcing the rules.
