THE MAROON A LOYOLA TRADITION SINCE 1 923 • "FOR A GREATER LOYOLA" Vol. 87, NO. 2 ONLINE EDITION AT LOYOLAMAROON.COM FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2009 Committee prepares for HINI By EDUARDO GONZALEZ Senior Staff Writer Antibacterial sanitizers amongprecautions With five cases of the HINI flu confirmed at Loyola, the university committee designed to manage this emergency, has already started taking precautions against the disease spreading. Alicia Bourque, director of University Counseling and Health Services, Ann H. Cary, professor and director of the School of Nursing and Marcia "Cissy" Petty, vice president for student affairs and associate provost, make up this team. Bourque explained they have been planning since spring what the plan of action would be if a student became infected. "We will be sending students who test positive for the HINI to their homes; however, if this is not possible, we will be isolating them in their rooms where we have already set up a food delivery system for the students to be able to eat, where the Resident Assistant will take the food to the student," she said. Infected students will remain in isolation until they are fever free, without medication, for 24 hours, as the Center for Disease Control recommended. While there isn't a vaccine ready to attack this disease, the seasonal flu vaccine will be available starting Sept. 3. The university also has a plan in place in case in the number of confirmed cases in the university increase. "Should this happen, we will continue to have classes through Blackboard, as is done during a hurricane evacuation," she said. Economics Club, Block host Ron Paul lecture By EDUARDO GONZALEZ Senior Staff Writer Ron Paul arrived at Loyola calling for an ideological revolution. "It's good to see so many young people here to lead this revolution." he said. The Texan representative's lecture, "The Fed and Foreign Policy," was about a libertarian way of government. Fie spoke in Nunemaker Flail on Sept. 2 for about an hour in front of a full house. The Economics Club organized the event, and Walter Block, the Flarold E Wirth Eminent Scholar Endowed Chair professor of economics, introduced the representative. Paul's main focus was his view of the current economic crisis. He went on to say that people don't take the time to see what caused the problem. "We wouldn't have gotten into this mess if we had abided by the Constitution," he said. He stated that Americans need to focus on one thing, which is the preservation of liberty. On that note, he added that the United States should change its foreign policy and look at the past to move to the future. "We have won more in peace and trade than we've had in war and violence," Paul said. "We could save a lot of money if we change our foreign policy." "You have a right to life and a right to keep what you have," he said. Paul also said, thai "the federal government overpowers states' rights." Block said he invited the congressman because Paul is "the leading libertarian and free enterprise economics person, but he's also a magnificent economist" and that Block wants students "that free enterprise is a benevolent system and that if you're in favor of free enterprise it doesn't mean that you are cruel or heartless." After Paul spoke the last word of his speech, the crowd burst into a roar. "The country Ls awakening, the revolution is alive and well, and if you continue it, you will see a positive change," he said. Loyola's portfolio rebounds By KATIE URBASZEWSKI News Editor The stock market has seen a rebound in the past six months, and Loyola's endowment, which is largely held in stocks, is benefiting right beside it. Loyola's endowment grew to $234 million at the end of July, up about 20 percent from the $194 million in February, said Doug Dougherty, the university's endowment portfolio manager. "The quarter ending June 30, WOLFPACK WELCOME KEVIN ZANSLER/The Maroon From left, Ellen Callecod, business freshman, Carla Boqran, psychology freshman, and Maggie King, international business freshman, stop by the American Red Cross volunteer recruitment table at the Class of 2013 Picnic Friday, Aug. 28 in the Peace Quad. University has plan for emergency situations By JOHN ADAMS Senior Staff Writer Hurricane season prompts test run With an active hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico, Loyola's administration tested out its emergency preparedness plan. Loyola already has an emergency preparedness plan, though Meredith Hartley, director of public affairs, said, it is "a working document that is always changing." New to the plan is an off-site recovery center that allows the university to be functional away from Loyola's main campus. Ric Bell, risk management director said Loyola has a new contract with Sungard. a disaster recovery center. In the event of an emergency Sungard would provide Loyola with office spaces, computers and phones in an area away from New Orleans; most likely Dallas. "After Katrina we identified that we obviously needed a center of operation outside of the area so that we could keep administration together, make decisions and handle the requests and information that comes through," Bell said. If a hurricane poses as a threat to the city, Loyola's president would decide when to activate phase one of the plan. Phase one consists of evacuating the president, the president's cabinet, all of the deans and a few others to Dallas. During this time, they will monitor the situation. The second phase takes place 14daysafter a suspended operation of the main campus. Bell said this is the administrative part where they actually bring people that can answer phone calls and run the university, such as keeping Blackboard and student records operating. Bell said this plan was used for Hurricane Gustav last fall and it worked out well. There is also a new off-site facility for students who need help evacuating. Every student Is responsible for their own evacuation in the event of a hurricane and students living in the residence halls are required to fill out a personal evacuation plan before moving in, according to Marcia "Cissy" Petty, associate provost and vice president of student affairs. However, Petty said international students and those with extreme circumstances will now be evacuated on buses provided by Jesuit High School to Wesley College in Florence, Miss., about four to five hours from New Orleans, instead of Baton Rouge, La, like for Hurricane Gustav. "Wesley has graciously allowed us to use the floor of their gymnasium in case of evacuation," said Petty. In a campus wide e-mail. Rev. Kevin Wildes, SJ„ university president said, "While no one likes to think of these things happening to our campus, I want to provide you all with great assurance that Loyola University New Orleans Is prepared to manage these types of crises, and others, should they occur."
