One employee said she works two jobs to support her children, because the income from WFF just isn't enough. "My rent alone is $1,100 a month," she said. "I make about $1,100 a month at Loyola. If I didn't have my other job, I don't know where my four kids and I would be." Statistics seem to support her claims. According to The New Orleans Index from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the 2008 average fair market rent for a two-bedroom apartment in New Orleans is $990. In 2005, rent on the same type of apartment was $676. Matt DiChiara, marketing associate at MyNewPlace.com, confirmed that many New Orleans apartments are within this price range. The site listed $ 1,525 as the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in March and February 2008, and it listed $2,212 in January. Survey reveals stats on sexual abuse, rape By KATIE URBASZEWSKI ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR Although Loyola offers a sexual aggression prevention program for freshmen at the beginning of each year, half of the 311 Loyola women who replied to a recent survey reported that they've undergone at least one act of unwanted sexual coercion. Almost a third of respondents have experienced at least one incident that constitutes legal rape. The information from sociology professor Marcus Kondkar's survey showed that most Loyola women don't recall any discussion about dating violence or sexual assault during their new student orientations.Kondkar revealed the results of the survey Monday, April 7 in the Women's Resource Center. By conducting this survey, Kondkar said, it's almost guaranteed that Loyola could acquire a grant to educate more people about sexual violence and coercion. The majority of sexual assaults the students reported were by a friend or dating partner, at a party or the perpetrator's house. Students feel safer in these surroundings and are less likely to be alert, according to the survey. Also, women in dating relationships (committed and not) are more likely to be victims of sexual coercion, and it is more likely to involve physical force, the survey found. Sociology senior Danielle Gaubert assisted Kondkar with the. survey by testing the pilot and making suggestions. Katie Urbaszewski can be reached at ceurbasz@loyno.edu. CIU plans incite concern Office to lose its glass walls, Martins office may move By KATIE URBASZEWSKI and JESSICA WILLIAMS THE MAROON During two recent meetings to discuss the renovations of the Center for Intercultural Understanding, many members of cultural organizations and CIU interim director Lisa Martin expressed their unhappiness with the architects' plans. Henry Munoz, chief executive officer of Kell Munoz Architects, Inc., revealed during the April 7 meeting that the CIU office, located at the front of the Danna Center across from the Orleans Room, will not keep its glass walls. Instead, the office will be replaced with regular walls with "pocket doors," door-shaped openings that would keep the room open at all times. He also said Martin's office may have to be moved to open up the center. Her new office would be placed upstairs. Six television monitors would hang on the wall facing the Peace Quad, screening anything from photo slideshows to Web site pages to filmed events. Inside, one wall of the office will be "tackable," where papers and pictures could be pinned up.
