THE MAROON WWW.LOYOLAMAROON.COM FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 2008 VOL. 86, NO. 14 SGA legislature changing shape House of Rep res en tati ves in the works By LEE HUDSON THE MAROON Loyola's SGA is expanding its legislative branch by forming a House of Representatives to allow student organizations to have a more direct influence on SGA. "Our main theme this year is to put student organizations first. Last year each officer was in contact with two to three organizations," College of Business senator Lee Ann Moss, international business sophomore, said. "This process is better because it is more direct." Now, there is not a direct representation between SGA and its constituencies. There are ony a few senators representing each college. Chief of Staff Cade New business Accounting program has modifed courses, new director By ANDREA CASTILLO THE MAROON In the spirit of social justice, a new director has helped modify the College of Business by adding more courses to the accounting program so students can become certified public accountants. "According to new accounting program director Lee J. Yao. getting a four-year degree doesn't allow Loyola students to legally practice as CPAs, even if they pass the CPA exam. Yao said Louisiana law requires students to complete 150 hours to be a CPA. The old accounting program had become obsolete and BLOCK PARTY Presidential hopeful Ron Paul has enlisted the help of Loyola professor Walter Block in securing the Republican party nod By JAUN£ JACKSON THE MAROON Republican presidential Ron Paul recently chose Loyola economics professor and long-time friend Walter Block as his scholar-adviser for his campaign. Block has been friends with Paul since 1967. Over the years, Block and Paul have been involved in many programs together, and have given speeches together. When Paul asked Block to be his economics adviser, he accepted without hesitation. "When he started running, I guess I was one of the people that he would naturally consider on his side, (as some, one) knowledgeable about economics," hopeful Block said. Block's role is unofficial, but he gives advice via e-mail to Paul's campaign staff and his congressional staff. Block has also written and published open letters to Paul. As a libertarian, Paul's ideas for economic policy have included the idea of free enterprise. Block says free enterprise is the idea of giving businesses the opportunity to make money and trade with other countries Walter Block Economics professor and adviser to Ron Paul OR station takes 'action' to prepare vegan meals By KATIE URBASZEWSKI ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR Since the beginning of the spring semester, the Orleans Room's action station is strictly vegan. At its conception, the purpose of the action station was to give chefs some creative space and students more food options. It also provided a convenient space to serve up the vegan alternative. Now, all animal by-product options have been removed from the station, and only vegan dishes are prepared. Complaints from vegans and vegetariansvegetarians about meat being prepared in the same area — although ingredients were always kept separate — spurred the changes, which were also effected in part because many OR-attendees have special diets. Due to allergies to nuts, dairy and other foods, Dining Services chose to limit the ingredient options at the station with these people in mind. Music industry junior Zac Brown, for example, visits the action station because he can't have dairy or soy, but at the same time, "the food just tastes better," he said. The action station was not supposed to become the vegan station. The main purposepurpose of the action station was to provide "food cooked in front of you in a gourmet way," said Caitlin Craig, marketing and customer service manager of Dining Services. Craig hopes that after renovations to the OR. the vegan/vegetarian station and action station will be separate. "I know it bothered a lot of people that it was cooked on the same thing," music industry studies freshman Sean Hart said. "They should always have a strictly vegetarian station." All food prepared at the station is made RACHEL STRASSEL / THE MAROON Dining Services employees Madeline Bland and Cathy Gibson convene in the newly-carpted St. Charles Room. The carpet, installed during the holidays, leads the way in the series of upcoming Danna Center renovations. see PAUL, page 4 see SGA, page 3 see VEGAN, page 4 see PROGRAM .page 4 A 1 OVOI.A IRAniTION M\( 1 IsD 2 3 ♦ "1-OR A (» kI-A I 1 K 1 OVOI A" roaTdagainSßs3 ifflj See LIFE AND TIMES, page 6 MAROON DIRECTORY: CALENDAR, page 2 | EDITORIAL, page 10 | LIFE & TIMES, page 6| SPORTS, page 5 | NEWS TIPS: 865-3535
