THE MAROON Loyola Lhtiversify New Orleans VOL. 82, NO. 22 FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 2004 MAROON.LOYNO.EDU Board undecided on president By Lan Bui Assistant news editor Chairwoman Fraiche says trustees will meet again as soon as possible The Board of Trustees did not decide Wednesday evening who Loyola's next president will be. However, chairwoman Donna Fraiche said that the decision will be made as soon as possible. "We'd like to meet again as soon as possible. And I mean as soon as possible — we'd meet tomorrow morning if we could," she said. The board is set to decide between the Rev. Kevin Wildes, S.J., of Georgetown University and the Rev. Robert Neihoff, S.J., of the University of San Francisco. The Rev. James Bradley, S J., chair of the Presidential Search Committee and director of the Loyola Jesuit Community, said that the search committee members fulfilled their responsibility of submitting who they believe are the best candidates. The presidential search committee met and interviewed Niehoff and Wildes in March during their Open House meetings with faculty, staff and students. The committee officially presented the Board of Trustees their recommendation of the two unranked presidential candidates on April 1. "Both men are highly talented, in light of their different track records. They carry different strengths for the Board of Trustees to consider," Bradley said. Bradley said that, although the committee's position was not to decide what the university's greatest needs are or which presidential candidate is better, they did seek certain qualities during their selections. "We were interested in candidates who can Tri Phis await sanctioning By Chuck Alexander Staff writer Women sat through a 16-hour hearing to determine culpability; todays sanctions can be appealed to the University Board of Review within five days Twenty-three alleged members of Tri Phi are awaiting their sanctions from the University Board of Review after a 16-hour hearing where they were found culpable of hazing. According to one of the women in the hearing, just one of the accused was found not culpable of any of the charges. The hearing, which took place in Octavia 11, lasted from 10:30 Tuesday morning until approximately 1 a.m. Wednesday. "It seemed that they had an intent from the beginning, and they succeeded," said one of the accused, who wishes to remain anonymous. "We really don't feel like there was enough evidence to find us culpable, but they already had their minds made up." Ad Team campaign promotes Fla. tourism to baby boomers By Katie Ide Staff writer When she began her Advanced Advertising Campaigns course this January, communications junior Mary Lanaux thought that preparing an ad campaign for the state of Florida would be interesting and fun. However, after four months of long nights and hard work, she supplemented her opinion with the word "exhausted." Today, 16 Loyola advertising majors will put their work to the test. They are traveling to the seventh district competition of the National Student Advertising Campaign in Biloxi, Miss. There they will compete against 10 schools in their district for a spot in the national competition, which takes place in June. Communications senior Priscilla Hollier, creative director of the project, said that this year's client, FLAUSA, wanted the team to find ways to increase overnight stays in hotels and increase travel revenue in Florida. "We needed to bring money to Florida," Hollier said. "We needed to brand the campaign, to get their logo out." Loyola sues over mold in New Hall By Naomi King Assistant news editor University seeks more than $100,000 from contractors for allegedly shoddy work Defective design, water intrusion and humidity problems are just a few of the allegations in a lawsuit Loyola filed against the construction, insurance and engineering companies of New Residence Hall in January, according to New Orleans Civil Court documents. The court records indicate that MAPP Construction, Inc.; Travelers Property & Casualty Insurance Company; Eskew + A Professional Corporation; and Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, Architecture & Engineering, PC., have been named as defendants in the case. Loyola is suing the companies for breach of contract, negligence, breach of warranty, legal compensation for damages, losses, repairs and costs for the legal proceedings. The university claims to have spent almost $130,000 on repairs on the building caused by the allegedly defective design and construction. The Maroon picks up five awards at SPJ conference By Joe Rosemeyer News Editor Regional meeting draws student journalists to Nashville The Maroon staff took five awards at the annual region 12 conference of the Society of Professional Journalists during the weekend of April 2, including a first-place title for news "coverage. Life and Times co-Editor Lola Thelin, communications senior, won in spot news coverage for her story on Bernard Knoth's resignation from the university presidency. Communications sophomore and Sports Editor Gene Guillot took second place in sports column writing; communications senior and Editor in Chief Joe Halm shared a second place title for editorial writing with Nicole Haase A'o3, while Haase also won third place in sports column writing. Communications junior Gillian Dicker won third place for photography. Aside from the awards, the conference in Nashville, Tenn., focused on students' concerns and questions about what to expect in the profession after graduation. Communications sophomore Holly Kangas, Assistant Professor of Communications Jack Morris and communications senior Earl Descant were among about 60 journalists who participated in discussions dealing with topics such as "After Graduation: Making the Most of a College Journalism Experience," "Mining Public Records" and "Inside the Game: Covering Sports." Leading the panel discussion were select members of the media profession from the Nashville area. Among the professionals was Joe Biddle, a longtime sports columnist for The Tennessean, Nashville's daily newspaper, who has become a local celebrity because of the respect his readers have for his sports writing. But Biddle emphasized that, despite his popularity, not everyone always agrees with his opinion. "Not everybody's going like you," Biddle said. "If that's what you think, go to Wal-Mart and be a greeter." Other discussions turned into more like advice sessions geared toward journalism graduates looking for a job.
